Vote for the cartridge you feel is the ultimate all time white tailed deer hunting cartridge
in your post, if one isn`t listed ,tell us what you think it is and we`ll add it.
I am gonna start it off with some of the most common cartridges..
I vote 270 Winchester and a 130 grain bullet..
TG
Feel free to add your favorite cartridge

While it may lack the power and publicity of a lot of cartridges, I believe that the 30-30 Winchester has killed more whitetails than any other..
TG, I would have entered a vote, but the poll was closed...

I've read so many comments from guides and sports writers that only mega magnums can be used for big game in Alaska.Long before all of the magnums the 30-06 & 270 killed every species of big game on the north american continent. The 30-06 also accounted for lots of big game animals in africa with all of the 1903 & 03A3's rifles and ammo left behind after WW2 invasion of africa.

Yep, it'd be the ought-six for me. How could you possibly leave it off the list?

You are absolutely right.I had to edit the poll down to 10 choices and inadvertently omitted the 06..Its fixed now so vote for it
I agree, the 06,270 and 30-30 have to be on the list of choices

I think you left off a couple of excellent ones, 6.5x55 and 7x57. If you're talking whitetail only not all around, I would say 300 win and 7 mag could be dropped off.
While 6.5x55 & 7x57 are near matches to the 260 rem & 7mm/08, I think either has more supporters.
Just my thought

I know a lot of old time around here never owned anything but a 30 30, and a lot of people started out with a 30 30. So I voted 30 30. But in today's deer stands around these parts anyhow I think the 30 06 is probably most common.

IMO, there is no "ultimate" anything when involved wioth hunting or shooting. Equipment depends on taste and often financing. I did vote for the .30/30...I figure when it comes to quantity of whitetails killed over the years, the .30/30 is probably king.
I've not killed hundreds and hundreds of whitetails, but have killed my share, and seen a bunch more killed. Personally, I've killed them with: .223, .243, .257 Roberts, 6.5x55, .30/30, 7.62x51, 7.62x54R, 8x57, .375 Winchester, .38WCF, .444 Marlin, .45/70, and 577/450 Martini Henry, and patched round ball in .440, .490, and .530. They ALL died.
I guess the above list is what you get when you have a short attention span when it comes to guns!

I like the AI version of the .280 Rem. A 140 gr. .284 bullet at over 3200+ fps is nice for my Whitetail (or Mule) Deer hunting.
I didn't see that one on the list, though. So, I'll vote for the .......
140 @ 3200's nice but 180 @ 3500's reeeaaaal nice. Damn, that one's not on the list either.

shocks me the .30-30's running away with this one.
guess most folks nowadays hunt their whitetail close quarters, making the .30-30 more viable.

Despite all the BS from folks taking whitetails around here at 400 to 500 yards, the vast majority are taken at less than 200 yards, and most of those at 100 yards or less. I consider the .30/30 a decent 150 yard cartridge, and able to take whitetails at 200 yards under the right conditions.
I suspect Gene can give us some stats from the Walking Horse that are close.
My wife's grandfather ran a turkey operation just north of here from the 30's to the 60's. Have no idea how many deer he killed for food in the 30's and 40's but it was a whole bunch, and almost all of them were taken with a single shot Mossberg BA in .22 LR. That's close shooting.

I suppose if I hunted locations that guaranteed shots of the close nature, I'd consider the .30-30 a more viable option then I currently do. I have me a lever .307Win and that poor thing has never been able to get itself bloodied. I just don't hunt in places where 150 yd. shots are the norm. They certainly can present themselves but oft times, if you're not properly prepared, you don't fill a tag. My .307 and certainly the .30-30 just don't have me prepared as best I can be.
I've never hunted the Walking Horse Ranch with Gene. Would love to someday. If day in day out shots there are close, they're not seeing what I see when i hit the hills. "BS" aside, I tend towards things with a little reach to them. I have to. You always hear folks spouting off their favorite percentages about how the majority hunts close and most "real" close. This I do not relate to. The river bottom opportunities we used to have earlier in my hunting career where shots were always predictibly close have all but dried up. So we've adjusted to range land and flat prairie hunting opportunities. Back when in high school, my dad hunted deer on these same family lands me and my brother do now. He did so then with open sited runt guns, too. Deer were everywhere and opportunities weren't lacking. He'd never consider doing so now. The opportunities he was afforded back then just aren't there now. He understands that. Nowadays he's retired and hits the same hills, where he used to hunt with an open sighted .30-30, with a 7mmRemMag and a nice mid-power scope. Proof positive that an old dog can indeed learn new tricks when it benefits him. If you consider the topic "BS", I saw this old dog make a beautiful shot on an antelope last year at a distance that'd make you blush. It's what we do up here. Evidently, what's the norm up here requires just a little bit more. Talk to ya later. klallen
