Amen to that. Here we do what it takes to put meat on the table. If that means shooting an elk at 900 yards you man up and get it done. My kids don't understand excused when they are hungry.

I voted for the 30-30. It's my favorite, though I own and use several of the others listed. I just like the old leverguns and the 30-30. Always have.

:holysheep:  i can't believe i just read what i did.

it's only #1 cause somebody forgot to include the warbird as a poll selection.  a gross oversight, if there ever was one.  lol.

:pissers:.270 win

(by the way, i'm still trying to get my .270 ready to roll come hunting season with a new load using the 130accubond.  last filled a tag with this savage in 2003 so it's due, i guess.  hell, it's practically a brand new rifle, with as many rounds as i've put through it)

LOL...Yeah I know bro but aint that many folks owns a Lazzeroni chambering..Though I admit they look pretty good ballistically on paper.
You`ll do fine with your Savage Korey.I still use mine when I hunt by myself( no clients) I shoot the 7mm Mag then in case I have a bad runner(bad shot by client) and more so for big feral hogs. Been two big uns killed in the last three or so months on the ranch.Got my eye on a big one I let walk a year ago,big ole purty solid grey one.Let him walk cause he had broken cutters.
Not that a 270 wont drop him on the spot but I like that added whack of the 7mm Mag out past 300 yards, just in case I need it. Yes, I have in the past, twice been required to shoot a wounded animal with it that was headed for deep thicket.
anyways, Korey, what are ya feedin your 270?I use AA3100 but I havent loaded a batch of 140 grain Sierra Game Kings HPBT in a while.Still have a coupke hundred rounds ready to do the deed.

morning, gene.  i used imr4350 when i worked up my 130 ballistic tip load back in 2003.

i've got one range session in this summer as i try to get a 130 accubond load ready for this years hunting season.  i switched to r22 this time.

predictability for this rifle has kinda been all over the place with its development.  nosler published 55 grs. of imr4350 as their max load yielding close to 3100 fps.  i needed 57 grs. to get to that velocity in my rifle with the ballistic tip.  then they publish 58 grs. of r22 as their max giving 3100 fps.  and 58 grs. in my rifle with these accubonds were already breaking 3200 fps.  i had the next groups made of 59 and 60 to test, as well.  61 grs. was the max load in the hornady manual with r22 and 130's yielding 3100 fps and with nosler being typically mundane in their called max loads, i thought my starting stuff would be somewhere in the middle.  was right around 3260 fps by the time everything was shot.  i've yet to get to it, but need to pop the primers to see what the damage was on the pockets.  needless to say, i'm a ways from a final load.  i like the velocity and accuracy was ok, but don't know how realistic it is for the cartridge to expect over 3200 fps.  harvest is rolling hard'n heavy up here so i've no idea when i'll be getting back to it.  might just be another warbird or .280ai year if i run out of time.

I can't break 3000 with my 270 and RL22. I shoot 130 grain Partitions over 60 grains for an average of 2958fps. I don't think I will change it as I am shooting 4 shot groups of .547 with a Mossberg ATR 100 that cost less than the scope it wears.

nope, hwy40.  with groups like that, i can't imagine you have much motivation to change things up.

nice shooting.

A question with no right answer! In any given situation anyone of these and a bunch other's could work well. Now if the question was best in different terrain's, it could maybe, maybe, be slimmed down. Problem is if a guy can get close enough to a Coures Whitetail to shoot it with a bow, another can certainly do it with a 30-30. And of course more than one whitetail has been killed in Penn. by guy's that dearly love their 300 magnum's.

Because of the wide varity of cover whitetails are found in, choice of a rifle for sepcific terrain would be a better question. One rifle for me that could have handled all the terrains was my old Rem 660; my son has it now. It was in 308 and I love that cartridge but I think I'd have it in something 30 cal or under based on the 308 case. How's that for avoiding an answer! Choice of sight's would be a low power scope for me. My 660 wore a 2 3/4x Redfield Widefield and never left me wanting. The closest thing I have to that now is a Win mod 70 Featherweight in 6.5x55 and it has a 1-4x Redfield.

Of course if the question is just what cartridge has taken the most whitetail, I'd guess it to be the 30-30. Probably follow that with the 30-06.

i'll say the 30-30 because they were affordable, and was my 1st deer hunting rig and probably alot of others because of price.living in the state that is wild & wonderful offers many shots taken under 100 yds.90 % of the deer i have shot with a rifle you could've shot with a bow.so a 22 mag would be and has killed many deer around here lol.

TG,

I vote 270 Win.

My reload is a 150 SGK over 5x.x grains of IMR-4350.

PS: How in the H@ll did that 6 mm Rem make your edited list when there must be 50 mentioned in this thread that would have been a better fit? I see it even got a vote!

Ray, I do believe that that 6mm might just be "dealers choice" Nothing wrong with that, just causes a little head scratchin'. RD

I voted .308 and here's why.  The best bullet weight for this caliber with a 1:12 twist is 165gr.

.243 - a resonable cartridge out to 200 - 250 yds depending on the skill of the operator.

6mm - same as above.

25-06 - Too fast at the shorter ranges but shines at 250+ yds.

.270 - Same as above.

7x57 - A very good cartidge with factory, but reloaded it will start to shine.  Factory loads are under powered because of the older rifles.

7mm Rem Mag - too powerful at any but the longer ranges.  A waste of power and expesive to load.

30/30 - The greatest brush caliber IMHO.

300 Win Mag - Too powerful unless you load it with 180+ grain bullets and shoot at 150+ yds.  A waste of power and expesive to load.

30/06 - Won't do anything that the .308 can't do UNLESS it load with 180+ grain bullets.  A bit more expense that the .308 to reload but it is almost negligable.

3 Excellent calibers that aren't included are the 7mm/08, .257 Roberts and the .260 Remington.

It was touch an' go there for a bit.

I was kinda' stuck between the .243 and the .270 from the choices listed.

I decided on the .270 as well as the majority have so far.

I like my 6.5x55 for whitetail but don't think it falls in the category of "cartridge of all time."

All the support for the 30-30. Wonder if it would still get it if the mod 94 had never been chambered for it? Imagine if you will the 30-30 trying to compete in a bolt action or even single shot rifle. I don't see this 30-30 vote as a vote for a cartridge but rather a vote for the mod 94 win. Either that or an acknowledgement that it's been around longer than anything and killed a lot of deer.

EDIT: I just had another thought. If it were not for all the surplus Springfields and Enfield's, would the 30-06 make it also? What really made the 30-06 popular, lot's of cheap weapons and ammo or something else. Remember that it became popular durning a time when most people meat hunted.

Don, I'm no big fan of the 30-30 but I can tell you that there were/are a ton of vintage 30-30 Savage bolt guns and fairly new HR single shots in the deer woods in WI. Mostly for kids under about 16 but they are still out there and still killing deer. RD
