So there was a poll for Elk cartridges and one for Whitetails.

So lets talk Moose. What to you guys like for Bullwinkle?

I Like 30-06 with 200 partitions  or 300 Win mag  with 200 pt's and  35 Whelen with 250 Speers. At the ranges I normally shoot the 30-06 and the 35 Whelen get the green light with my preference in the 35 and having an 06 for a back up rifle in camp. I like the 300 Win for more range and depending on what area I get drawn for there can be some longer shots and I like the reach the 300 offers.

gotta qualify this by two statements :

1st, i've never hunted moose (but look forward to it one day).

2nd, don't have anything in the safe from the list so again, couldn't vote for the choices.

so, when i go moose hunting, i will either have the 7.82 warbird with me and a 200 gr. accubond or the .358 sta and it's 280 gr. a-frame.  bro killed his moose this last year i believe with one of his 7mm proprietary rounds so they obviously don't take a huge caliber class to get the job done.  warbird or sta, that's what i'd use.  later.  klallen

Moose hunting you say! Well, depending on where your at, I am going to have one of two calibers because of bears mostly. Those calibers are the .338 Winchester magnum or the .375H&H magnum. Moose are not that difficult to kill understand, shoot em wait 5 minutes and they will fall over, no matter if you used a .243 or .375 H&H.

However, bears are usually in the same area as moose and they love moose meat as much as I do. Nowdays bears seemed to have been schooled to come to the shot. Nothing in this world will cause you to crap your pants, when leaning over a moose trying to skin it out and then see a bear coming. On bears, bigger is always far better trust me on that one pilgrims.

I once upon a time had a very well known legend of an Alaskan bear hunter tell me what to use on grizzly bear, "If your gonna hunt these bars get a model 70 Winchester in .375H&H caliber" I took his advice to heart and got rid of my Remington the next week, in favor of a .375H&H, which is now a .375 Weatherby pushed out a little more.

Timberghozt, how right your are, just put those 220 grain premium bullets in the magazine and your good to go my friend. They work like a charm. If I had not already had a .375H&H, I would have done the same thing. As matter of fact, some folks I used to hunt with years back, used 30-06 and 300 Win mags with 220 grain bullets. One guy had a 35-Whelan that worked like a charm in the woods!

Can always talk moose.

I voted 06 because that is what I have and used, to date, on the moose I have killed. I have used 150 gr, 180 gr (the most) and 220 gr (my M1917 likes) with Bronze Tip, Core-Lokt and Round Nose Jacketed commercial loads. Maybe this season I'll get one with one of my .303's and handloads, or handloaded 06.

Just had roast moose for dinner, can see the bottom of the freezer now. That is ok cause the KINGS (salmon) are here.

Bigger is better and a .338 Win Mag would be ideal. My dream moose gun is a McCann .338 Win Mag Garand conversion.

Stevekoozer you're Canadian and didn't include .303??

Were the 200 gr Partitions handloads? And If so do you have a favorite recipe you would care to share?

I am still in the process of working up 30-06 loads using 180 gr Sierra Pro Hunter SP. I do have a box of 200 gr Partitions that I would like to try.

AJ

I got a Bull Moose with 300 Mag, 220 grain bullet. I took several cows over the years with various calibers, 30-06, 45-70, 303 Brit and others. With a bull Moose I think the cartridge should be big and powerful, something in the 338 Mag Class or even 45 class.

I lived in Canada for several years and own a home in the Montreal area. So I can hunt and fish while I am up there.

Never hunted a moose but I'd either use a .457 or 12 gauge slug gun.

Some of the 458 rifles would work, but a 12 gauge slug gun may upset the moose. Moose are BIG, let me restate that they are LARGE. A bull can be 1,000 to 1,500 pounds, where the cows only get to be 600 to 800 pounds. The only thing bigger than the moose in North America is the American Bison or Buffalo.

A bull can be 7 to 8 feet to the shoulder and the rack can be almost as big. When I lived in Kitchener, there was something on the news about a cow that came thru the area, she didn't break her stride for chain link fences and in one instance pushed her way thru a 10 foot tall privacy fence.

So an appropriate cartridge is needed.

The shotgun is my version of a bow. I'm pretty sure brenneke slugs can do it. They don't expand, I have even heard people talking about lion hunting with them. I'd never do that but a moose doesn't sound out of the question. As long as they are within about 80 yards. But I'd hunt them with a guide for at least 5 years and a rifle first. I have no doubt a shotgun slug can down a moose within their range limits.

I have dealt with my Great Uncle Walter rifles, he died a few years back, but he would work a couple of years and then go on safari for big game. He had what looked like a slug gun, it was a double barreled big bore. He had them from .400 caliber to .600 caliber.

Plus he had all of the H & H calibers in one rifle or another.

The one that looked like a slug gun was rather powerful when it was fired and the slug was a solid lead projectile. The slugs looked like a simple shotgun slug, but was longer and heavier.

He had the life, safari every two or three years, had his own Pre WW II Army Staff Car and didn't have any one nagging him. He took a lion with a 30-06 bolt gun at 40 feet, he was either brave or stupid.

I think the .366 DGW would do the trick because of the almost 6,000 pound of energy it has. I think an A Squared or a Nosler bullet would be the best, or even cast lead. I like the Barnes, but would a TSX type do the trick or maybe a Banded Solid in 350 grains be better?

My guide up near Hudson Bay in northern Quebec hunts moose with a 303, but he admitted that it took a few shoot to put the moose out of misery.

Fella's;

I pulled my moose ticket this year, so I'll be huntin' them. In fact, I'm going on a scout trip next weekend. Here in Montana, the season runs from Sept 15 pretty much through November. However, I'd like to bag him early & be able to hunt other stuff to the max in the rest of the big game season. I am limited to an antlered bull in my area, on the other hand, only three tags were issued for the area.

Back to the subject at hand though. Some few years ago, just because I could, I aquired a dedicated moose, elk, bear gun. Mine is a Tikka Whitetail Hunter, left hand bolt, in .338 Winchester magnum. So that's what I voted of course.

I can tell you from personal experience that finding an LHB in .338 WM is a trick. Oh yeah, there are companies that catalog it, but just try to lay hands on one. Take a deep breath & hold it while ya do too.

My go-to load is a Hornady 225 grain spire point exiting the muzzle at 2900 fps for a bit over 4000 ft. lbs. of energy. Winchester brass, CCI large rifle magnum primer, and 75.5 grains of RL19 powder. It's a very decently accurate load in my gun also. However, bench work is a stone bitch.

We shall see.

I shot my father in laws 338 Win Mag a couple of times. He used it when he went elk hunting in Colorado and the rest of the year it sat in the cabinet.Like you CB, I wouldn`t want to spend a day at the bench with it....Then again,I don`t sit on the bench banging away with my 300 Win Mag either.I seen it bust a ring on the eye of a loudmouth kid that just had to shoot it.I told him,"dont take a loose hold on this rifle"..I guess he didn`t understand what I meant. The Leupold on her whacked him hard..
Then again it did it to me one time as well.I drew down on a doe at 375 yards  using a small oak tree as my rest and took a standing shot.I pulled the trigger and looked back in my scope for her.She was flashing a white underbelly at me dead as a hammer...Then I felt something warm on my nose..:wink:Bled me good where that Leupold kicked me in the eyebrow...
