I shot my buck last year in the same spot Ron got his doe. A decent public land buck. It was my first hunting season after moving and one of the things I missed was the abundance of public lands very near to my old place. Last summer I learned there was one section of blm land near the house. A section isn't much and most of this one is vertical so not a lot of huntable area. The day started with going to Great Falls to meet CB and Ron to hunt CB's place. Jim had to work and I'm not sure about Ron. Anyway I returned home and decided to head to to a spot to watch a few draws. Not a wilderness hunt by any means. I sat on a large rock and watched the drift boats roll down the river. Watched some does directly above me and they watched me while they fed. I was basically relaxing in the afternoon sun and taking in a little mother nature. I happened to look down and the buck popped out of the draw about 50 yards in front of me. I'd been seeing a three point everytime I came here and initially thought it was him and really didn't pay much attention. He started to work his way towards the does and I took another look and realized it was a different and a little better deer. He stopped abruptly and did a 180 and trotted back in front of me, not sure what distracted him but I gave him a muffled grunt and he stopped and I took a very easy 50 yard shot, laying prone over my back pack. I used the trusty .270win with my favored load of H4831 and a 130gr partition. I gave him twenty minutes and went to get him. He was a little better than I expected, not trophy class, but I was happy to have him. I was even more happy to have at least one spot, albeit a very small one, nearby to hunt when time was a issue. I hope to gain access to surrounding lands for next fall. I've also found a few more small tracts of public land nearby that I'm quite sure don't get hunted much. One that should hold whitetails. I also should add the atv made the haul out a breeze and I'm not ashamed to say I liked that :) I drug the buck down hill about three hundred yards to the tracks and threw him on the rack and five minutes later I was pulling into the driveway. Here are a few shots of the deer and  of the general area. Kind of dry country, but real pretty in the spring.

except for the trees, that area looks similiar to where i hunt mule deer (on the missouri).

one thing that strikes me about your pics is the top one... the deer camoflauges fairly well in the grass, but if you put him in or next to that scrub behind him, he'd just disappear.

Hey, I know where that is, I went fishing about 500 yards from there last year. Saw a small buck up on the ridge across the river from us. If I would have know it was huntable, I would have been there myself. I am moving Rob, so I'll keep it a secret!

Hudge, Ive seen a few people hunt it. It is such a small area I wouldn't travel to hunt it but not bad being close. If I can obtain permission to hunt some of the local areas I think my prospects for large deer is pretty good. Have a good move and enjoy the humidity:) Maybe when you retire you can move back west. There are quite a few retired military in the neighborhood.
