An old friend called and extended an open invitation to come to Texas and hunt Russian Boar. I'm wondering if anyone can provide suggestions on caliber size/weapon preferences. I do have a Contender that I can buy another barrel for............but it is single shot.?

Tell me some of your stories so that I can have an idea of what to expect.

Been shootin em for 30+ years,.I like a 30-30 cuse its light, short, and you can crawl through the swamp with it. They certainly arent hard to kill. In some areas where its really thick, i generally use a shotgun, with some oo buck.  When I got my dogs with me , I cary my encore on my side, but dont really plan to shoot one unless its too big to risk my best friend. Just carry something your comfortable with cause shootin hogs is usually a very fast bussiness. You've only got a second or two.

You can use anything that is considered a deer cartridge. .223 Rem and up will be good.

Wow! I was thinking that it would take more gun than .223 or 30-30. I have both so i just need to decide which one. Thanks!

There goes a good excuse to buy another gun though. Hmmmmmm.

I would go 30-30 before the .223. A .308, .270, or .30-06 would be perfect.

Any decent whitetail cartridge will do for hogs down here. .223 is a bit light, but it can be done.

some thing that repeats is always a good idea .... first hog i killed i shot at 10 steps with a 45 cal. muzzle loader and ended up in a tree for about 10 min while he circled around the bottom of it snapping his jaws (sounds about like 22 going off)  He was about 350 lbs with 3 1/4" tusks.  And I was a very nervous 17 yr old up a 2 inch tree that was bending over.  So in my experience a second follow up shot would have been nice to have.

I shoot em with whatever I got in my hand..Most of em get shot with a 7mm Rem Mag( my guiding rifle) or my 270 or my 25-06...
This fella was shot with a 45-70 and a 300 grain HP handload.Kind of cheated on this guy,I`d been hunting a big hog  I knew was in the area, kept toting that lever action Marlin in hopes he would show up,one evening right before dark we ran into each other..He lost.

I have a contender in .44 mag. that does a good job. Stick with heavy for caliber bullets. 170's in the 30-30 or 240's in a .44 mag. The .223 might work but i would hone up on my tree climbing skills before using it. P.S. I would consider a Marlin 45-70 as perfect, but '06 class cartridges do well, just stay away from light bullets. They are harder to kill than deer and at close range without dogs are dangerous

I have a Marlin lever action in .44 Mag. Shot a 200lbs. boar at 80 yrds. facing me. The bullet entered his chest butterflied his heart and continued on out of him. Never found the bullet. Drop him there on the spot. Was using 240 grn. Hornady behind Unique. I have forgotten the amount. The way I load it was near max. Good luck and send pics.

I dunno, the pigs I hunt must be all a bunch of wussies. I shoot them, they fall down and die. Never had one charge me, never been treed, all they do is fall down and die, and convert to sausage.

10-4 on that.    The only one that did not drop for me when I was very young had a 50cal BP ball smoking in his forehead when I droped him with 2nd shot.  Piney rooters got a tough skull.  When I was a teen I would usually get em eith a 22 mag. I quit doin the headshots with low power though.

I've been treed by a large hog. Also had some hunting buddies who started hunting in Nov. with a pack of 31 hounds. When i again hunted with them in Mar. they only had six left alive, but they're not very dangerous when shot from a high blind over corn as is the common custom here in Texas.

I've only had 1 dog killed, but all of them have been sewed up more times than....Experenced dogs know how far back they need to be, and when the hog is cornered is when they'll get cut takin turns keeping the hog seamed in.  Any dog can catch, usually a bulldog is best, but training a good trail dog takes years.  I will take 2 traildogs usually. And 1 catch dog.( only have 1 )  I'll take a puppy with the experenced dogs for a year or more before letting it trail a hog or bear alone.   The only trail dog I lost was drowned by a 250 lb hog nin a small pond.I use  hound a little but mostly Airedales to track.  There very tough smart, and fearless.  I have seen a lot of dogs killed, but usually those dogs did'nt have enough experence, or just  got in too tight a spot with a mean boar with no excape route.      By the way, been using the same catch dog, Jake, for 8 years.  Still has a left gonad, and 5 teeth, but he livesz to catch.

My primary is a ground blind, although I do have a high blind as well.

Charlie, I apologize if my post sounded criticle of yours, it was not intended that way. Baddawgy's original post said he was going to hunt in Texas. My intention was to point out that it is only when wounded or cornered that a wild hog is dangerous, but they are dangerous.

No offense taken, just tossing in my .02.  Just wanted to show not everybody in Texas hunts from a 30 foot tower with an AC, refrigerator, and TV! (although I've seen some like that).

Well I've got a lot to think about before I go. I have a Marlin 336cs 30-30 and I have a Contender. I'd need to buy a new barrel in the caliber of choice for the contender.......and it is a single shot. Hmmmmm decisions!! My dad says I'm welcome to borrow his 30-06 but it's an old military style bolt action with iron sights. I dunno!

"Old military style"  M1 garand?    Sound like it would do a nice job on them hogs.    The hogs down here are too fast for a scope, its all heavily wooded, and pigs are usually on the move durring daylight hours.  However I havent hunted texas hogs, so I m not sure about them. The contender would probably be okay as well, depending on what caliber it's got .
