i don't know all of the names, i see many of them on replies to this topic, but i would like to hunt the animals of the plains, the different antelops, gazelles, impalas, eland, kudu and the many animals with "bok" in their names. any of these and many others would be a terrific hunt! i doubt that i would be too much interested in shooting elephants, giraffes, hippos, cats, apes, monkeys and animals of that nature. no criticism against those who do, just doesn't seem to be my thing.

on a side note: PHIL! your rates do seem very reasonable. currently in my life, an africa hunt is way out of my financial league; having said that, if an opportunity ever comes along, i'll be sure to get in touch with you. based not only on your rates, but on your posts, i think it would be pretty nice to hunt in your neck of the woods!

Force Recon,                                                                                                                   What area did you apply for in Wyo. I've hunted every year but 3 since 1983. Have a friend in Cody where I've been hunting since 1998. He has horses, etc. I have 40 acres in central Wy. but not a res. anymore . Have seen elk, deer and antelope on it . Have hunted deer and ant. there though. Have a friend "next door" w/90,000 acres ! Let me know and maybe we can hook up. Have hunted all over Wy. and Ut. Maybe can set you up or give some good advice. Hunt Az. allot two. Have shot cow elk with bow the last two years and have gotten another cow and a 5 pt. bull w/ archery there too. Hunted Nv. and Co. some too. Trying to get drawn for N.M. but don't have a point system. Have a buddy there too and a couple in Az. and one in Ut. w/mules. got a nice buck in the book cliffs in Ut. 2004.

Hi Wyo, Sorry for the late reply. I am not really sure of the area. I have never been there. I have a relative that lives in TN that goes almost every year. He was going to put me in this year. All I really know is that it cost 500 bucks up front to see if you draw anything. And if you dont, then they send your money back. I would love to kill a nice elk or mule deer. Lets talk when things get closer.

FRM, I too am sorry for such a late reply. Haven't viewed this topic for a long time ! About Wyo. . The elk draw deadline is already gone. I'm assuming the $500.00 you were referring to was for elk. I applied for a limited entry area because of the Nov. date coincides when I hunt deer out of Cody in Nov.. The deer season ends Nov.10. Elk if you draw it is the whole mon. of Nov., The general season elk is Oct. 1-28th I think. Deer is Oct. 15-Nov. 10. The deadline for deer apps is Mar.15..Elk was Jan.31. Antelope is also Mar.15. No areas open around Cody in Nov. though. Region F is the deer area I hunt. It's pretty much a 100% chance to draw. They have 4 pt. or better restrictions sometimes. Last year was any buck, before that it was 4 pt. for 3 yrs.. Shot a nice 4x3 muley last year and year before a 4x5. No elk tag. Saw some huge bulls though. Applied online last night for Utah gen. deer, limited entry deer and bighorn. Have a couple pts. for limited entry elk but am switching back to deer because my 3 yr. waiting period is up and better odds. Shot a nice 28 in. 3x3 in a limited entry area 1in 2004. Aslo applied for Ariz. elk and antelope last night. They seperated it this year and the deer and bighorn deadline is still in June. Deadline for elk and ant. is Feb.13. Still have to apply for Nev. and New Mex. elk, deer, ant. and bighorn by April deadline. Calif. deadline is in June also. This time of the year... If you have any questions about Wyo. or any other states I listed let my know. Glad to help.

Sounds like you cover a lot of ground. I have never hunted out of state so I know next to nothing about it. My cousin has been doing it for several years. I hope to get to go soon. I just need to make myself save the money for a good trip.

It's cheaper if you can get a couple or few guys to go to split the cost. The way non resident tags $ keep going up is B.S. though. They are making it a rich mans sport.

I'll never get to go but if I did, the african game I would like to hunt is the wart hog and the cape buffalo.

Anything that moves and is on the Endangered Species List!  Just kidding, I'd only hunt with my bow in Africa, so that would leave out the dangerous stuff(but that is what an additional trip the following year is for).

Maybe a Zebra....bowhunt?

Well Phil, since you asked OK, I hope to hunt lion, leopard and take a couple of nice buffalo, one over the 42 inch range. Plains it will be Sable for sure and I do want a massive male warthog too. I'll use my .375 Weatherby,  in a model 70 Winchester on the leopard and a Nosler Partition bullet, like wise for harvesting the sable.

Now on the lion, I'll use that 416 Remington and 400 grain soft point bullets. The Cape Buffalo will get the attention of my .475 caliber. I will use a Swift  A  Frame for the first shot, backing that up if necessary with some Woodleigh solids.

A nice list of critters.

Regarding your cartridge choice for Leopard. My 35 Whelen is the finest Leopard cartridge on the planet ( your 338 would be much the same).

Your 375 Weatherby will get the job done for sure. It seems that each of my clients that have shot Leopards (which would be ALL of them that wanted to shoot one) that have used a 375 cal., I have had to on average follow the Leopard quite a bit farther than Leopards shot with smaller calibers.

On my first safari this year for Leopard, the client (a good shot) used his 375 H&H for the Leopard. Long story short, the Leopard came at 6:40, eye balled us for 7 minutes, started to eat, the client shot, the Leopard dropped at the shot. It was DARK by the time we walked the 63 yards to the base of the tree. Looked for the Leopard in the dark for 1 1/2 hours (a bit spooky) and did not find it. Came back the next morning and found the Leopard 80 - 90 yards from the tree in the heavy bush. Luckily, the Hyenas had not found it and eaten it. Oh, by the way, the shot was perfect, through the lungs and out the off side shoulder.

This pretty much has been my experience shooting Leopards with calibers from 375 up.

As I said, every client that wanted to shoot a Leopard has, . . . . we have not found 2 of them, even though they were bleeding. Both of them shot with large calibers, 1 a 375, 1 a 458.

Personally, I think you would get more satisfactory results on your Leopard with your 338.

Leopards are not "tough" animals, thin skinned, not very thick and quite lightly boned. Big bores tend to "bore" a hole through them with out much energy/shock transfer. In my experience, the plains game cartridges are quite a bit more effective at "dropping Leopards at the base of the tree".

JMO.

Phil, I have swore by my .338 Win mag model 70 and TBBC bullets for years! I guess I got to reading to much about the African hunting and the .375 H&H ( figured the Wby would be even better perhaps) however, I have never ever had any problem with putting down bull elk or moose quickly with that caliber. Sounds like my .375 Wby (also model 70 Winchester) will get passed on my next African hunt.

I still have some bugs to work out on the model 70 .475 mag, need to shorten the 26 inch barrel (down to 22.5 inches) and lose that damn muzzle brake on the end as well. Randy Brooks did a great job on the brake, just don't care that much for those blessed things. I'll be sure and give you a loud shout when the door opens for me to make my next trip to the Dark Continent!.

I once contemplated on purchasing another double gun but I just don't think it would be practical for me. I watched VERSUS the other night, another Buff hunt OK. Well, the client used a double (Beretta .458 caliber) but he shot the buff at 75 yards or so and then the Dagga Boy went to the thick thorn vegetation. The next shot looked to me to be well over 125 yards with buff on the run.  I am not knocking the PH but I want to use a scope for such yardage ( over 75 yards ) and be positive of my shot. Iron sights passed 75 yards for me is just about max, as my eyes are not getting better these days.

Phil, I've managed to make 3 hunts to Africa in the past 7 years and have taken most of the common animals and a few of the "not so well known" ones.  My taxidermist will be busy for several years.  I shot an old buffalo bull in Zimbabwe two years ago, but I would hunt them again in a second.  A mature free ranging Sable would also be at the top of my list, as would a large Warthog boar that has eluded me in three trips.  I've got a thing for Bushbucks, so a different specie of Bushbuck would be high on my list, as would a Klipspringer, a different Hartebeest and whatever Duiker would inhabit the area I would be hunting.  I would also like to take a good tom Leopard.  I guess I'd better start buying a winning lottery ticket!

A nice list. Yes, Buffalo hunting is adicting.

All free ranging animals here in Tanzania and in just the variety you mention.

When ever you are ready to go back, give me a call.

Yes, winning the lottery would be a good think.

I think if I had the capital, time, and ability, my dream hunt in Africa would be a Lion, Elephant, or Buffalo. In that order.

Since I'm already saving for a retirement hunt (Lets say...19 years from now? haha) I'll probably, God willing, be wanting to hunt something like a greater Kudu or as big of an impala as I can find. I think they make beautiful trophies.

On top of my list are Cape buffalo and leopard.  Next are bushbuck, eland, hyena, and a really nice warthog.  I've taken a number of the common plains game but a big warthog was the most difficult to find.

Kudu was a great experience. Warthog, Springbock, Impala, and Sable all added to a great hunt. I took a Baboon as well, which was pretty wild. It took a hit from a 180gr TSX and just went wild. He was about 50 yds away when I hit him, and must have ran in circles for about what seemed like minutes, until the blood ran out.

All in all, a great experience. Dangerous game is out of my price range for the forseeable future, but I am defenitely going back for plains game. The mounts also make a great conversation piece.

Robert Mugabe.

But I'm wondering what kind of mount would look best.
