Grey,

Sorry (and sorry to the others here, I am about to say some thing taboo), I shoot factory loads out of my 375.

I do not consider the 375 a stopper, and the (here it comes again) factory loads seem to do a pretty good job on the animals I do use it for.

I have heard, the 350 grain (I think) is pretty nice for the bigger stuff. For sure, it should penetrate like crazy !
If I can find some (sorry) factoy loads with a 350, I would give them a try. Should have more penetration than the 300's.

Hey Phill

I think sometimes we all use factory load, wether we would like to admit it or not.....

The reason im asking about the 350's.....if in solids, dont you think its going to be over penetrative? the 300 solids already  got penetration to spare on buff?

I know plenty of penetration might be needed for elephant, but i personally dont think a .375 is the right medicine for them....but thatt might be my opinion.

All the best

Sorry , dont use "factory" in my Number One 375 , or any other caliber , for that matter .. Haven't gone over 300 , with mine , but being a Number One , and not having a magazine length restriction , I can load the bullets " way out there " , and can push them a bit faster ..

Contrary to what many say there is no "majic" in the 375 , On DG it is like a 28 gauge shotgun in clays , it is an expert's gun ..

I love mine and use it for whitetail deer up to elk and moose , but would think twice about using it on DG .. Is what the various 45's are for ..

Grey,

Can never have a cartridge with too much penetration when hunting Buffalo.

I agree with HollandNut, personally, I think the 375 is 'on the fence' for Buffalo. I know many thousands have been taken with a 375, but that does not make it a Buffalo cartridge IMO. As I have said, I killed a Buff with my 35 Whelen (and smaller cartridges) which were/is not even close to being a Buffalo cartridge.

I own a 375 but don't use it much. It goes to the bush with me, but rarely gets used.

The 416's are great on Buff (and everything else).

I think it's some kind of threshold at various points .

Yes a 375 will drop a buff , but a 416 class you can see the difference in the reaction , then again at the 45 class you seen even more of a reaction , then at the 50 point , well thats a quantum leap even over the 45's ..

Bell scored many elephants and other critters with the lowly lit'l 7x57 , but dont mention his name over a campfire , and I aint usin a 375 on buffs ..

There is no such thing as "too much gun " for buff IMO ..

Not sure about a quantum leap from 45 to 50, but a definate jump for sure.

One thing for sure with Buff, bigger is better.

Chuck,

Thanks for the info.

Personally, I have dumped all my 375's. Again, personally, I think the cartridge is overrated for Buffalo. I think the 416's are much better.

As far as a plains game rifle, I think there are better choices than the 375 as well.

I'm sure someone will be able to use the info you posted. At least they loaded them with some good bullets. Woodleigh's are very good bullets !

Understand your feelings about the 375 Phil,  I decided to start out with a 375 as my first entry into big bore rifles.  I was a little concerned about the recoil, but feel I can definitely tolerate and shoot well double the recoil my 375 has as long as it doesn't come back too sharply.  My plan is to jump over the 416s directly to a stopping rifle.  Caliber is still TBD ..  I tend to shoot my rifles a lot. I will probably get 500 rounds through it the first year, maybe half that every year after excluding hunts so mine will be a little on the heavy side.   I do lift weights however and figure if I can carry an 11 lb rifle up and down the Colorado Rockies hunting for 12 plus hours a day I can probably carry it in Africa.

:)
