Are single shots suitable for DG ??

I have two a '78 vintage Number One 375 H@H and a'79 vintage 458 Lott Number One ..

I have mixed feelings on this one .. I have seen a buff drop in his tracks with one solid from a 375 , and I have seen a buff soak up 5 900 grain solids from a 600 NE , anyone of the five shud have dropped him ..

Now with lots of practice I can reload either one with ALMOST the speed of a bolt gun .. But that is the key , practice .. A thing many dont do much of , especially with a  medium heavy or heavy ..

In this situation , it pays to have a cool headed PH who will back you , trophy be d***** , I want to go back to hunt again .. I had one situation , where the PH froze and nearly go me killed , because he didn't follow up , and No it wasn't with a one shooter either .. I got the second shot off at about four feet , much too close for this ole country boys comfort .. And another free hunt the next year , minus my airfare ..

In the end I cant honestly answer my own question ..

Jack

Bwana HN,

Suitable for hunting dangerous game ? Yes. Suitable for following dangerous game, I say no. However, at the end of the story, even in a charge, you only need 1 to score and end it.

I would say, when hunting DG with a 'single spitter', don't stalk too close 50, 60 yards at the closest (but some times you will be closer without knowing it until he explodes out of the bush, hopefully not towards you).

As you related, don't depend on anyone to save your butt, but you ! !
Sh#t happens in the bush as well as in the city.

Yur point is a good one , and is why I am undecided ..

You go forward with a plan of , say the line in the sand is fifty yards , but you're not the only one who can draw ...

If you draw , you may pull it off , if ole dagga boy draws ???..

Momma got my other drawers handy ??
