Gents

I was thinkin about the smaller cal rifles used in Africa , ones who put the meatt on the table.

What comes to mind is the following, .303 Britt, 7x57,8x57, 9.3x 62, .318 Westley Richards. (im sure that i skipped a lot of others as well)

Why did none of these ever gained the popularity in the States like it did here?

all the best

Hey Grey...7x57 is not overly popular but it is pretty common bud.I have a nice custom 7x57mm myself...Can`t say as to the others.I know Ursus has a few of thse you mentioned. The 7x57 in my opinnion is just a can do cartridge..If more folks knew of it and what it will do without the big recoil and hoopla, yyou`d see a lot mor 7x57`s in the American deer woods.:wink::thumbs:

It has taken American a long time to warm up to Metric Cal's. The 6mm Rem and the 7mm Rem Mag where the first real sucess stories when it comes to Metric cal for big game hunting in the states.:thumbs:

GS;

.303 Brit, way too much trouble in the '50's and '60's finding softpoint hunting ammo, I bought a new, unissued , #5 jungle carbine for $14 in '60, after I cleaned it up, a box of 20 soft point was $10, I traded it for a J.P.Sauer und Sohn .380 and was glad to get rid of it.

7x57 and 8x57 were only available in expensive foreign made ammo for full loads or very puny domestic stuff, the reason being the thousands of $10- $15 junky 91 and 93  and the .318 junkers that were blowing up regularly with hot Nazi surplus ammo.

Most of the rest you mention just were never chambered in any American guns.

As 9x57 , 9.3x57 and 9.3x62, no guns and the .35 Whelen was easy to get and the brass was really cheap.

Mostly is a matter of economics , availability and regional taste.

Don

Bea

Thing is ive never warmed up to the 375H&H, dont know why, as the dealings i had with it was satisfactory.

Just dont like it. But most people around here do like it . Id rather go for a 404Jeff or 425 WR if i could, but im prob going to end up with a 375, as it just makes sense in SA, as finding ammo and components for less popular cals is a huge problem.

All the best

My opinion, I think the 30.06 eclipsed them here in the states, highly effective, ammo easy to find, large selection for reloaders, large selection of rifles chambered for it! my 2cents

Anything Japanese or German was reviled for years in the US following WWII. Carrying a German or Japanese rifle was still traitorous here in the mid 60s when I started hunting. German stuff gradually became more popular but some older rural people are still anti Japanese. I know a dairy producer who switched the plant he sold his milk to because his milk hauler had Yokohama Tires on his truck. I shoot an 8mm Mauser, wish I'd had it years before. RD
