Welcome aboard!
I have had a great time visualizing the bowling ball blasting! Don't have any load data for you, but I thought I would bump this to the top. Maybe Hammer will stop by? Think he has a couple of these cartridges laying around......maybe?

My memory is no good no more...
But think my Searcy 500 Nitro Express 3 1/4 inch is regulated for 570-grain Woodleigh bullets with 106-grains of IMR 4831 and Federal 215 primers.
Note this is a 3 1/4 inch cartridge -- not the more common 3 inch.
Also note that I am not where I can get to my notes.
Would recommend contacting Butch Searcy, who builds a fair number of 500 Nitro Express rifles.

Years ago got a lifetime supply of Woodleigh softs and solids.
Think most of them came from MidwayUSA, but did get some from other suppliers.
My experience with Woodleighs on cape buffalo has been good.

Just returned from my Mule Deer hunt.
I have the same loading manuel you just ordered, so not much point in me giving you some info.
And I agree, Woodleigh's are good bullets. As stated in other places here, I shoot them out of my double and they do quite well on Buff and Lion, not to mention Ele's. Additionally, the Woodleigh's should be the same shape as what your rifle was regulated with, unless it is a newer rifle, then it may have been regulated with Trophy Bonded bullets.
If you do decide you need some loading info, send me a PM and I will get you the loadings.

| Graham Wrighte wrote a couple of good books, "Shooting the British Double Rifle" Vol 1&2. Both have a lot of information on shooting reloading and regulation of Doubles. I worked up a load for my 500 3 1/4'' with a 570gr Woodleigh Fed 215 HDS brass & 105.0 gr of H4350 for 2100fps. The recipe I got from vol 2 an update for vol 1. H 4350 has less felt recoil than IMR 4831, good thing using a rifle of this horsepower.

| Thanks for the reply and load info.....I think Dad's been loading the 4831, It sets me back, as expected..after about 10 rounds my vision blurrs a little bit..not sure what thats all about, guess my coconut can't handle the repeat of the recoil..I'll look up those books you mentioned...looks like limited intrest on this topic?...Best Regards Dennis

Not many people are into big bores. As when selling a double rifle vs. a bolt, the number of people interested are considerably less.
I don't have a 500, but have shot a quite a few. My friend has one.
I agree, recoil can be more than expected. When I am shooting big bores, I always limit the number of rounds to under 10 (I usually shoot 8). No need to shot more than that. The mechanics of shooting are the same, whether you are shoot a 500 or a 243 or a 22 for that matter.

The best way to shoot when regulating or sighting in a double 500 or any heavy recoiling rifle for that matter is standing using shooing sticks, you will be able to rock back thus discipating the recoil. And if you are shooting from a bench use rests that allows you to sit upright for the same reason. Also if you allow yourself to get to much into the prone position while shooting you may see a white flash like someone holding a piece of paper in your face. If you see that stop shooting pack up and go home and take it easy, you have just received a mild concusion. It happened to me a few times!

I hadda 500 , another story there tho' , huh Phillie ...
Bullets can be difficult to find and shooting gets spendy with NE's real quick , even when reloading .. I cast for mine , so that helps ..
They are fun ..
