Thanks a 22" tube would be a little stiffer, particulary at a number 6 contour and handier as well.  I'll have to figure out how to get to the right weight and balance is all.

Very nice.  I am getting ready to send my 550, 375 to the shop that does CZ's work.  I believe they are "Triple River Gunsmithing" in MO.  I've got about 400 rds of either 270 Horn, SSP,  71.5 grs IMR 4320 for 2700fps or 300 Horn, rnsp or solid, 78 grs IMR 4350 for 2560fps.

They are going to steel bed the action and forward lug, install crossbolts, barrel band swivel, shorten the stock  and shorten the barrel.  I'm thinking 22" will make the riflle much easier and faster to handle.  I don't believe the velocity loss will hurt bullet performance.

My neighbor (Lt. Col. John George retired, author of Shots Fired in Anger) killed quite a few elephants in the 50's with a cut down mod. 70, 375.  (21" barrel)

I really like the idea of the shorter barrel.  What do you guys think?

Hi Guarddog, I'd get a quote from Ed and Wayne at American Hunting Rifles (AHR) on what you want done before you send your rifle out.  You can reach them at

The CZ custom shop worked on my rifle and while they did some nice things, the glassbedding wasn't great, I had it redone, the action job had to be done twice.  Ed and Wayne may cost a bit more, but you won't be unhappy.

Best of luck with your rifle,

Chuck

I think Elephant hunting has changed. Personally, you are on the lowest side of effective cartridges for Elephant.

A 375 will kill an Elephant when hunting. But if you spend much time in Elephant country, you will wonder how you survived so long with just a "pop" gun.

Phil,  thanks for your input but I'm afraid I have mislead you.  I have no intention of hunting elephant with this rifle.  The largest animal that I would try would be a Cape Buffalo and maybe a lion if I'm fortunate enough to make it to Africa.  Possibly a large Alaskan brown bear.  I like the CZ 550 in 375 very much but I long for either a 416 Rigby or 458 Lott.  Unfortunately my Orthopedic guy has warned me that my surgically repaired rotator cuff might not survive that much recoil.

I'm still curious about what kind of performance I might obtain with the shorter barrel in 375 with 300 gr bullets.  I doubt if the Bufalo would be able to equate the difference in velocities.

Your thoughts?
