Anyone use one of these? I know Empire makes their rifles in this caliber and Terry Wieland speaks highly of the cartridge.

The big bores from A2 work fairly well.
Are you looking for a particular cartridge for a particular animal ?
Are you looking for something out of the ordinary ?
If so, there are many to choose from. Many of the "Wildcats" and lesser known cartridges can and are very effective.
A short example of good cartridges that are not real common -
450 Ackley
450 Rigby
460 G&A
475 A&M
475 Supreme
500 Jeffery
505 Gibbs
510 Wells
All are very powerful and all will; get the job (whatever it is) done.
There are many other cartridges in this class/list, some more well known than others, but all fully capable of plenty of power for whatever you may run into.

Hi Phil, I'm looking for an anchoring rifle. I bought my CZ 550 in 375 H&H as a way to get used to medium/big bore rifles and the move up to a bigger caliber. The caliber's I've been thinking of so far are the 470 Capstick (and we've talked about it), the 500 Jeffery and the 495 A-Square. The 500 Jeffery is a lovely round, but I really should've bought my rifle in that caliber from CZ if I wanted one. Though I still have less than $1800 into my rifle which has a lot of extras on it including: Dual crossbolts, action job, Declerator recoil pad, mercury recoil reducer, high vis front sight, NECG masterpiece rear site (AHR glass bedding and additional recoil lug) as well as AHR's CZ upgrade kit (straighten and fill bolt handle, M70 3 position safety and match quality single stage trigger from AHR). It shoots great as a 375 H&H one ragged hole at 100 yards when I do my part. Here's how it looks today.

The 500 Jeffery is a grand old round, getting it to feed I hear is an art. AHR (Ed Plummer and Wayne can do it), but it's not cheap. The .495 A-Square is intriguing because even though it's .510 bore the fact that the cartridge case and rifle barrel say .495 may save me a lot of grief through TSA and customs. It's a nice cartridge, lots of power with less recoil than a Gibbs or 500 A-Square. Then the 470 Capstick which essentially duplicates the Lott plus maybe 5% but is not a factory offering (which I like) and requires the least work to my 375 H&H. I'm planning to with a Krieger barrel between 22" and 24" haven't decided which length yet.
I do plan to hun cape buff and elephant in the next 5 years up close and personal as well as Kodiak bear. I'm giong to shoot my 375 through this hunting season in Colorado (ends in the beginning of December) than plan to send the rifle out in January for the work. So I'm trying to get my ducks in a row now. Going out with the youngest son today to shoot our 270s, 375 and 45 Super for Father's day lol. The older one is in the Army Airborne Ranger program.
So as always I value your suggestions.
Regards,
Chuck

Personally, I would go with the following order ~
(Note: All cartridges listed are plenty powerful enough for anything that walks or breathes)
458 Lott
I think the best choice of the bunch. Mine has never failed to save my butt in some hairy situations. Plenty enough power for anything. Components will always be available to reload this cartridge and there are some factory loads out there. They may not be the best for hunting, but they are available. And although the 375 H&H or 416 Rem. cases are easy to reform, any wild cating of cases is a pain in the butt in the long run, even if you enjoy it in the beginning/now, or think you might, it is still a pain in the end. Additionally, 45 cal bullets will always be available. I mostly carry a double now, but use my Lott on late season Elephant hunts due to the chance of rain.
I think a better cartridge than the Capstick (Sorry Peter)
450 Ackley
All of what I said about the Lott and a bit more. Cases are easily formed and it will shoot a 550 grain bullet to higher velocities than the Lott. Plenty of power for anything. Sort of a 458 Lott mini Mag.. Better than the Capstick, IMO. Actually, this is a great choice. More power than the 458 Lott and can shoot 600 Grn. bullets at a reasonable velocity. If you stuff the Lott with 600 grn. bullets, you lose quite a bit of velocity. I don't know why anyone would want to shoot a 600 grain bullet, but you could if you wanted to. Personally I'd stick with 500's but a 550 would not be such a bad thing either.
460 G&A and 450 Watts
A good, powerful cartridges. Closer to the Akley than the Lott. Both powerful enough for anything.
Of concern, the Watts has not been standardized, so there are many variations (and the only reason I would not put it up with the Lott or Ackley). The 460 G&A, again, customizing cases can be a pain as well as mag. capacity.
IMO, recoil starts to become a factor in your choice at this point. Recoil in the 80 to 100+ pound class. These suckers kick the crap out of you and recoil recovery for a second shot if, needed comes into question.
Yes, I know, you never miss . . . . . . . . . . . . but what if there are 2 coming at you ?
Also, magazine capacity becomes an issue with these larger cases.
460 Weatherby
An excellent cartridge, but only with the toughest bullets available. The Weatherby's increased velocity puts more than a bit of stress on 45 cal. bullets to where when hunting you MUST use premium bullets. (and in truth, with any of the cartridges listed here, when hunting). Shoots 600 Grn'ers as well. Magazine capacity is an issue to think about.
505 Gibbs
Extra power. Bullets can be a pain to find. Don't know about loaded ammo.
500 Jeff
More than the 505 Gibbs. Loaded OAL is a concern. A huge cartridge with lots of power. If there are many Elephants in your future, I'd choose this one. However, something to think about . . . . . . with either the 505 Gibbs or the 500 Jeff, recovery time from the recoil starts to get pretty "iffy" if you need a second shot for whatever reason due to heavy recoil. Don't know about loaded ammo for this one either.
Personally, I would not consider the Capstick. I do not feel it has any advantage in power over the Lott or others listed here. Additionally, if you need more power than the 458 Lott provides . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . you need A LOT more power (the pun can go either way).
The is a discussion over on my forum about "Stopper Development" if you would like to have a look.

I will definitely look at the Stopper development thread. I've been practicing getting off 3 quick accurate shots with my 375 H&H. Being able to do that is definitely something I'm concerned about. I do plan to put a Krieger contour #6 barrel plus add another recoil reducer to keep the balance right on my new caliber so the rifle will weigh about 12 lbs without scope. That will help a bit
Thanks,
Chuck
