No need for gun bearers with that field piece. Forward controller/spotter gets the coordinates via GPS and radios them back to the fire base. The gunner sits under a shady canopy sipping an exotic adult beverage while he dials in the numbers and lets 'er fly from a couple miles out.
Next advance in dangerous game hunting: Predator Drone mounted with M242 25mm chaingun. Hunter doesn't even need to be on the same continent.
But seriously ... I'd take anything I could fire a couple of rounds out of quickly and accurately enough to anchor that buff without my needing shoulder surgery immediately following the shot, something in the .475 - .600 diameter range, 500 grain solid with muzzle velocity somewhere around Mach 2. And I'd want my guide to have at least the same and be a way better shot than I am.

Have you thought a Barrett 50 BMG rifle? In Vietnam, we nailed a water buffalo with Ma Deuce, 3 shots and it was history. It was probably dead after the first round, but with such an animal, the adrenaline rush and the both thumbs on the butterfly, it could have been nailed with 20 or more rounds if some of my guys were manning the M2HB.

If I were a PH in Africa, and had the money I'd buy a .577 double with std loads firing 750 grain bullets at 2050 fps. The .577 was supposed to give better penetration than the .600, as well as being a few pounds lighter and with less recoil. I have a ruger number 1 being built atm in .577 NE 3" should weigh in at between 12 and 13 pounds, which is what the doubles apparently weighed. I am going to use 650 grain bullets for plinking/targets/fun and IF I get to chase a nasty critter with it I'll load up some 750 woodleighs. She'll boot like hell with 750's but if in a charge isituation its the last thing I'll be thinking of, and when its all said and done I recon I'll be glad I had it.
Steve
You won't notice much difference in recoil between a 600 and a 577. Nor will you have much recoil reduction with a 650 vs 700 grain bullet is pushed at the same speed.

I would use a 458 Winchester loaded with a solid bullet, probably Barnes or A Square. But I will have my 600 Nitro Express double rilfe as a back up.

One thing I have mentioned before, is the time lapse between the 1st and 2nd shot. For me, the line is at the 500 N.E. Anything that recoils more than that, I cannot get back on target fast enough for a second shot. Sometimes, one shot just won't do it.
Sorry for the delay in answering. I am back from safari just now and going out again soon. I don't know why my auto 'watch topic' is not notifying me of the posts.

Phil,
The reason I like the Double Nitro Rifles, is when in dougbt you can have twice the punishment in your trigger pulls with both barrels. But I don't recommend this method unless there is no other recourse.
Take care,

Jerry,
If you are talking about "doubling" a double, I would not recommend it. I have done it once, by accident and once on purpose. When doing it on purpose at the range at 25 yards, you get NO accuracy, with either shot.
If you pull both triggers you may not have/get a killing shot. If you just pull 1 trigger, you still have one more aimed shot remaining, and are not left with an empty rifle (if you had pulled both triggers at once).

Phil:
I had a friend's Merkel 470 double on me once. What we found out later was that the front trigger was a single set trigger. I pulled the rear with the rifle fully stoked, the recoil set and fired the front trigger and it really scrambled my eggs! completely missing the target at 25 yards.

Yep, when both barrels go off at the same time, you hit n o t h i n g !
Best to use 2 aimed shots.

I thought the deafening roar of both barrels would scare the animal to death.

I read an account of the son of a hunter illegally killing a cape buffalo with a 22 hornet, it was a lucky eye shot into the brain, the article never spelled out the consequences or fines.

I thought about it for a bit and still think a 50 BMG rifle would be the best carriable high end stopping power rifle.

My ideal stopping rifle cartridge is a:
458 cal for reasonable cost
flat pointed heavy bullet with crrimping groove
about 460 Weatherby case capacity
magnum belt for surething headspacing
tapered shape like 458 Lott for easy feeding
Standard magnum length for normal sized action
This gives me 458 Lott or 460 Weatherby based wildcat. The 458 Lott would be nice because it would fit an extra round or 2 in the magazine.
A double would be great, but I don't see why an 18" barrrelled controlled round feed bolt gun with a 1-4x LER scope wouldn't be fine also. I think I would go slightly short on the LOP for fast shouldering. I would add weight and mercury recoil reducers until it weighed 12 - 14 lbs. It should also have crossbolts and an extra "beater fiberglass" stock for use in all climates.

Unless the rifle is a "Scout" type, you are asking for 'scope eye' with a short LOP.
Personally, I have a bit longer LOP on my double and have come to think it is faster and easier to shoot, in a hurry.
As far as stocks go . . . . . either the stock (and rifle) "fit" or it doesn't.
