Building  medium.  Originally, I wanted to build a 35 cal, but after a lot of thought, I settled on a .338.

Here are some of the details -

Whitworth - (Commercial Mauser action,  The donor was a 300 Win. Mag.)
Bartlein - 1 in 10 twist barrel (maybe fluted maybe not, will depend on weight and balance)
Gentry - 3 position Safety (removing the side safety)
Timney trigger - (the only trigger I can find that fits a Commercial Mauser)
Stock - Cut from a blank a client sent me.  Classic safari style, pretty straight in design, as this rifle should have a fair amount of recoil and I wanted/like straight stocks.

BTW ~
Dan Warner is doing the metal work (reamers, dies, etc.)

I am pretty excited.  I am hoping to get it back before my red Stag hunt.  Can't decide if I want to shoot something with it before the Red Stag.

Will be chambered in 338 BOS

Phil, forgive my ignorance on cartridges suitable for Africa but how much more wallop does the 338 BOS have than a 338 Winny?

Don't know yet.  It's my own design.

I will probably need some help for starting load and suitable powder data.

I am hoping for 2800+ fps with 250 grain bullets

That should be about 200+ fps over the Winnie

Got these from Alex at Master Class Stocks.

This is the first time I have seen the stock.  The last time I saw the wood, it was a blank.
(BTW, thats not my rifle parts seen there).

Well Phil, excellent choice that .338 Caliber! NO FLIES On That Caliber My Young Man.

.338-BOSS you say, interesting indeed, sounds close to the .340 Weatherby or abouts. Not to much difference lower than the .338 Ultra mag according to the new Nosler manual.

You gotta love the sectional density of those .338's indeed. You have a great day mate and watch our top-knot!

Looks like that rifle stock is going to have a lot of charactor too. Nice looking piece of walnut Phil, congrats on the new rifle.

Update.

It looks like it is coming along.

Some beefy X bolts and fully bedded action and barrel channel (with a floated barrel) should make this stock pretty flex free I would think.

It's coming along . . . .

http://www.kodakgallery.com/ShareLanding.action?c=181t7890.6hoe8igk&x=0&h=1&y=-gog7bw&localeid=en_US&cm_mmc=site_email-_-site_share-_-core-_-view_photos_album

Should be done in a couple weeks.

Can't wait !

Phil, weren't you having a 500 Jeffery built as well?   How's that coming?

Nope. l have all the big bores I need. A 450 N.E. and a 458 Lott for B/U work.

This is it, and more than likely the last custom build I will do, as I will pretty much use this for everything other than DG.

The only exception, is if I do decide to go ahead with a 35 BOS.  It would have more frontal area that the 338, and would be a very nice medium as well.  I do have a couple guys over on my site that still want a 35 BOS, so maybe I will get around to it if the 338 BOS is lacking in some way, but I don't think that will happen, as it shouold be pretty darn close to the 340 Weatherby.

Ah, well all I have now is my 500 Jeffery.  I have to ask permission to use my youngest son's 270.  It used to be mine, but  I gave it to him  last year :).   I may pick up an older 300 Weatherby Magnum one of these days and have it rebarreled.  Until then, the 500 Jeff is going to be hell on mule deer and elk until I get to Africa and Alaska.

Good luck with your new rifle,

Chuck

Went to the range  -

To shoot my newly designed cartridge and rifle

Sorry this photo is out of focus, but this is what I got at 100 yards with the load listed.

The way the rifle came together, with an experimental cartridge and load,   . . . . . what did I think about the results ?

Basic details :

Cartridge name - 338 BOS

Action - Whitworth (Commercial Mauser)

Barrel - Bartlein - Stainless Steel - 1 in 10 twist

Trigger - Timney - set @ 2.75 lbs.

Stock - English Walnut - Classic Safari

Initial R&D -
First load . . . .  first time out -

Caliber - .338

Bullet - 250 grain, Swift A-Frame

Powder - Reloader 22 @ 77.0 grains -

Velocity - 2,709 fps - @ 12 ft. from the muzzle

Energy - 4,000+ ft. lbs.

Warning !
Anyone that attempts or uses this loading data in any rifle, pistol, shotgun, cannon or any other type of weapon, is out of their friggin mind !

Phil,
This was very nice to follow your thoughts as you went through the custom rifle construction. Have you shot the 9.3x64 Brenneke? This is one rifle that has great knock down power yet the recoil is very manageable. Perhaps it would be fun to start a new thread to see how many hunters have this caliber.
Thanks for your effort to keep us informed on your 338 Boss project.
Regards,
Glenn

Not exactly African game, but I tried it out in New Zealand first and with excellent results.

Tar shot at about 80 yards, Red Stag @ 276 yards.

The rifle shot well, and my wildcat cartridge took care of business.
I used 225 grain Nosler Partitions on this hunt.  Shot both animals 2 times.  The first shot on the Tar got one lung and exited the opposite side.  The second shot was in the chest and was recovered.

Red Stag, first shot, double lunger and broke the off shoulder.  Second shot when he got up was the same, but missed the off shoulder.

Not a comprehensive test by any means, however, so far, the rifle and cartridge has worked out pretty darn well.

I am getting velocities close to the 340 Weatherby (and I have not finished load development yet), with a standard length action.

The accuracy is without a doubt excellent and the rifle seems to shoot 225 and 250 grain bullets very well.

Anyway, here are some photos -
