I want me a double rifle in 470 NE . Any one want to sell theirs really cheap?  Does anyone really have any experence hunting with one of the big doubles? Are they very accurate and worth the high cost or are they just a show gun to make you look like PH in Africa?

Ive had the pleasure to shoot a double in .375H&H rimmed a few years ago. It felt very comfortable and pointable. I can understand that someone who has to sort out a agitated buff of elephant in close qaurters might make use of it.

Regarding the acuracy of it, i cant say as I only did some offhand shooting with it. I would recon the biggest factor for accuracy in a double is if you are using the same ammo as what it was regulated for.

I would personally not go for a double for one BIG reason...... price. I know Chapius had a very practical double out a few years ago, but not on the classic design. It was an over/under.

I might be wrong, but I think Phil mentioned he has a double??

How about it Phil, what is your views on the subject?

I once owned a .375H&H in a double gun, that weighed in at 11 pounds! I thought it was heavy and didn't ever get the hang of loading it fast like in the movies, it was just to  heavy for my liking. Accuacy wise the left barrel would shoot under 2 inches at 75 yds from a rest like clock work. The right barrel was not inclined to do that well. Firing both barrels one after another would place those shots at 2.5 inches at 50 yds, which I guess is OK for in close work.

I found someone who wanted the conversation piece more than myself and was willing to pay me a profit.  The process of reloading for it was a real pain as far as my wanting to improve it's accuracy goes or deviating from the original load.  I tried several different loads and bullets but came away shaking my head, with groups wide spread on the target area. I was hoping to get 2 inch groups at 100 yards from the bench........It just wasn't going to happen with that rifle.

I too,  would  like to have a double in a .470 (not for hunting) but new rifles today are around the $12,000 dollar range (low end guns) last time I looked and that is hard to justify for this hunter.  I once held in my hands a Holland & Holland .470 double gun, who's asking price was a mear $85,000 big ones!!! It had a custom case and was a beautiful rifle indeed but then again so was that price.

The last Cape Buffalo hunt I read about featured them walking after the Dagga Boy some 7 miles in the hot sun for 4 days etc. Time for a  gunbarrer to be imployed if you ask this hunter. I am affraid my arms would feel like spaghetti after chasing those black beasts all day in the heat with a 12 or 14 pound double gun. Now getting that double gun to your shoulder in a big hurry, just might cause one to think about it twice before hand.

Remington, under the new name they made up, Spartan, is importing the IZH Russian sxs double in .45-70, or they are supposed to.

EAA was also supposed to start doing that last year, but never did.

The price is supposed be about $5-600 .

I think they are also supposed to have it in .30-06.

Don:wink:

I love doubles, currently have 3 one 06 one 9.3x74R and one 470 N.E.   the 06 usually holds about 1"/100 the 9.3 about 1 3/4"/100 and the 470 about 2"/100 I do handload for all, and all 3 have accounted for several game animals from impala to everything in D.G. with the exception of rhino which I will never never take

my 470 is a merkel that I had cut a scope mount grove into the rib. (old eyes and iron sights) One of these days I'll learn how to post photos, but I'm still working with hammers.  My son finally taught me how to use the net and send Emails, but gets exasperated trying to teach this old dog new tricks.  Especially since I'm perfectly happy with my hammer

oops I forgot - before the merkel I had a searcy, but ended up having to get rid ot it because it either wanted to double or only 1 barrel would go off, and nobody seemed to be able to fix it.  Searcy's got a good name, but this one was a lemon.  The other 2 are beretta o/u's and the barrels will interchange and also has a set of 20 ga barrels with that will fit into either action.  Its a pretty matched set - I kinda love them

Is odd Searcy is good about keeping his stuff "right" , they are a tad less expensive than the Merkel .. Have a friend who has a Merkel 140-2 in .470 NE .. 11 pounds , feels like six , is that well balanced ..

HHMM 85k for a Holland . Almost had to be used !!! Is my dreamboat , drool at the Holland gun rooms on a regular basis ..

Have seen one Buff , a BIG Dagga soak up 6 900 grain  solids from a .600 NE ..

Had two , one Merkel , and one Kreighoff .. But fool that I was , some other fools wanted them more than me ..

Handloading can be frustrating , since they are regulated to a particular load .. May be corrected here , but both mine were regulated to what I think is an "unwritten standard POI" which is around 2" at 85 yards ..

In reality , they are not designed with even 100 yards in mind , tho , they will do it no doubt ..
