I went coyote hunting this morning. I staked out my bobbing decoy and took a downwind spot to overlook the area where I figured the coyotes would be approaching from. I started calling (handheld caller) and at least 3 coyotes across the ravine, about 150 yds away, began barking and yelping out loud. They stayed in the trees and would not approach the decoy which was out in the open. They barked and yelped for 15 minutes before they slipped away. I caught a brief glimpse of 2 of them trotting away but I couldn't get a shot off due to the trees. They didn't look like they were spooked but they just didn't want to go to the decoy. I was downwind, all camo'd out, kept still and out of their view. Any ideas on what I did wrong? Thanks for any info.

Hi Donger, and welcome to the Handloaders Bench. My thought is you might have been spotted by one or more of the dogs while placing the decoy in the open. Or perhaps you were in an area that gets hunted a lot, and the yotes weren't buying the decoy or call? Sometimes those yotes just aren't predictable and you get skunked. Been there many times myself.
Try some more and you'll bring one or two down.

It's a possibility that I was seen putting out the decoy. I got a charge listening to the coyotes bark and yip at me that whole time. The coyotes aren't hunted heavily, actually they're used to being around people. I was hunting a private ranch that borders a county park. I had a coyote run through camp at this park. Thanks for the input.
