I got out to where I wanted to hunt looking out over a creek bottom that I haven't hunted yet this year. A slight breeze was coming in from the southwest and I was facing west sitting at the top of a hill with the FoxPro down by the edge of the field about 50 yards away. I started out with a few howls on a hand call made by Jason Lemarr (Lemarr Game Calls), waited a few minutes and gave a few more howls. Waited about 4-5 minutes and gave a female howl on the FoxPro. I waited for about 10 minutes and then fired up the FoxPro on the Rodent Distress and played it intermittenly. Around the 20-23 minute mark I had a pair come from the southwest (left side in picture). They were headed straight for the FoxPro. I gave a couple lip squeaks to get them to stop and they did. I lined up on the bigger one and dropped him in his tracks, no spin, just bang flop. The other one took off running across the cornfield and I couldn't get it to stop by howling at it. I shot him with a 39 Sierra B.K. .204 at 78 yards.
The coyote is the white spot at the bottom of the hill in the edge of the field.

The coyote had his hair rubbed off of his chest from mating. He was an older coyote. He only had one canine tooth left and it was severely worn.

Way to get em Melvin. From the pic it looks like you can take some really looooooong shots in that field.

You did good and you also did the old boy a favor . It just doesn't get any better than watching a yote come to the caller. I have been thinking of building me a 20 cal calling rifle and have considered the 204 Ruger but leaning more toward the 20 Tact. Call them in , then put them down.

bea,
This hunt would have been ideal for a video, however, Lucas is down in his back and isn't getting out right now. The sunrise was behind me with the coyotes walking across the field were a Kodak moment, but I've got them on film in my mind.
I'm amazed the more I shoot the .204 for such a little bullet to do so much. I just bought a 17HMR and have been playing around with it and I'm impressed with what I've seen out of it so far. Little bullets and high velocity are very interesting.
Gunrunner,
It was a good place for a long shot, but most of the time the coyotes are around the timber and brush. Sometimes it's hard to get them to cross open country and you have to get near it to pull them in.

bea,
I don't plan on using it for coyotes. I bought it because I didn't have one and it looked interesting. Every time I think I have all the guns I need, another one pops up and says "buy me". You can probably relate to that.
I wanted a longer range rifle for shooting squirrels on the ground in the fall when they are hiding nuts. I go for head shots only. I have some places where I can sit on top of a ridge and shoot down into the bottom or other hillside. If I can't get a head shot then I don't shoot. I feel it's good practice for shooting my centerfires.
I was playing with it this weekend and shot the 17 gr. V-Max into a stack of wet newspapers that had enough frost in them to make them stick together. I was amazed how deep the bullet penetrated. It went in 6-6 1/2 inch's at 25 yards.

That is better than most people report. I believe the 20 gr would take a yote if you placed the bullet in the head or behind the shoulder.
