Well, Melvin and Lucas Eades made it out last week to do some Turkey and P-dog hunting.  I must say it was a success.  They arrived early Friday morning and we got out before daylight to where the Turkeys were roosting.  When they came out of the tree, I believe there were five Hens and one Jake.  We got to see the young boy do a little mating, but Lucas had no luck calling him into range.  He had other girls on his mind.  When they took off in one direction, we decided to try and cut them off.  Well I'll try to make this story short.  We got up to where we called in my Turkey last year.  While watching for them to come out,  a whole other flock came right across our path.  Lucas spotted them and we got sat down just in time.  They came right too us, a hen was five steps away.  We ended up shooting to very nice Jakes and got it all on video.  Well, at least mine was.  Melvin sort of was looking for Lucas to kill a different one right after I shot mine.  But for the most part it turned out fantastic.  We decided to name the area Turkey Ridge due to last years success in the same place.  Tags were filled by 6:50 AM. 

Then we turned to Prairie Doggin.  Friday afternoon  the winds were high, but we did some stalking on  a new area and slammed them puppies pretty hard.  Saturday we shot all day from just before 9am to past 8:30pm.  I know my barrel was hot enough to cook marshmallows on.  Got a little burn mark on my hand to prove it..   We welcome two new friends (Ron and Jon) along on Saturday that I met on PredatorMasters.  I'm attaching pics of us and just hope I sized them right.

sounds like a fantastic time. prairie doggin' is a great way to spend some quality time, and a successful turkey hunt ain't bad either!

I've always wanted to get out west and try that P-Dogg'in. Looks like a great way to spend a day with good friends.

Bea175,

You are right on that, but its most fun doing it with friends.  Melvin, Lucas and the rest of their family have become great friends and hunting companions.  They are true sportsman and an asset to the hunting community.

North Carolina. The only thing here thats close to p-dogg'in is woodchucks up in the northern part of the state.  :sad:

Pdog'n is one of the best times that you can have.  Of all the hunting I do I enjoy it the most.  You wait all year to get a chance to go out and shoot a deer.  The season gets here and it is a lot of fun.  The anticipation, the actual hunt, and the kill are great fun.  But if you do your part you shoot once.  A lot of joy in the process and the end product but just not the same as Pdog'n.  If you have never been you are missing out.  The last time I went I took my father along who had never been.  We worked our way out to a high point at the edge of the town.  I use a 204 ruger and my father had his 17hmr.  I let him take the first few shots at dog's on out to 100yrds.  He got a few good hits but the 17hmr doesn't have the same effect as a 204.  When the close dogs were all down I pulled my 204 up and told my father to look through his scope.  I picked out a dog at 150yrds, made sure he had his eyes on it and took the shot.  The terminal effect of a 40gr bullet at 3950fps on a Pdog is amazing to watch.  The big plus is that a 204 doesn't buck at all.  You get to watch the effect your shots have, and follow up shots are very easy.

When I go to the spots that are close to my home town I just take my 204.  They aren't that big of towns so my brother and I average about 20 kills each per trip.  Getting 2 trips to each spot a year.  When we go out to western nebraska and get into the real good towns I take my 22 hornet, 204, 223, 223wssm.  Each one having a role as I work my way out to distances of 400yrds +. 

Just like alot of other hunting opportunities people who have Pdogs are learning that many will pay to partake.  So it is tougher to find spots to get on without having to pay.  I encourage all people who want to hunt and be serious about it to partake but sometimes it makes me angry that ground I used to go hunting on alot is now up for rent of the hunting rites and some city slicker is willing to pay a ton of money for the rights.  I guess maybe I am on the wrong side of this but it bothers me.  I have always taken a case of beer or doghnuts out to the guys who have let me hunt on their ground and been carefull to pickup after myself.  But money talks and I have lost some good hunting oportunities.
