Here is a picture of the first hunting I have done in two years due to work commitments. There is a large field behind my house and it of course has rats and mice. Well they on occasion invade my garage and generally mess things up. So I have myself a miniature game farm. The shot was from the one hand unsupported at 15 ft. (the other hand was use to hold on to the rafter to balance my self as I had only one foot on a 5 gal bucket and was leaning over, should have seen it, even I was laughing at myself). One shot .177 cal to the head. I know, I know.... what does an air pistol have to do with reloading or real guns for that matter. Hey I had to put the pellet in and then I had to pump it up..... aw come on just give it to me already....
This was the first of three in as many weeks (last one was Saturday).... now if I could only find a store that sold a rat mating call.....
Anyone know a good taxidermist?

Excellant speciman of the roof rat, ratus ratus.
Put out a bird feeder with black oil sunflower seeds, and use a red flashlight and a red dot or laser for some real action! You can't imagine how many will come to it at night.

Bulky body similar to a Norway (Ratus norvegicus), but large ears, large eyes, and long tail say no. I occasionally see Roof rats almost as big as a Norway, but usually they run smaller and are more slender.

The tail used to be longer. I have him by the very tip and it was nothing but scar tissue, like it had been bitten off. The one shot Saturday was smaller, but his tail was bitten off as well (still a bloody tip)
I am going to have to try the seeds and red light, might be fun.

Biggest roof rat I ever saw was about 18 to 20 ounces. References don't show them that big. This one was caught by one of my guys at a brewery, and she obviously hung out in the mash room and ate nothing but grain mash. Her incisors were much longer than normal, because she did little gnawing , just lapped the grain mash up with her tongue.

Black 6 , When I was a kid we sold Rat poison to farmers as a fundraiser for Future Farmers of America. If I remember correctly our sales brochure said there were 26 rats in residence for every one you actually saw. Better stock up on pellets!!!! RD
BTW, My favorite "rat weapon" was a 25 pound rat terrier- bull terrier cross. Three quick shakes of his head, toss 'em up in the air, catch 'em on the way down, one more quick shake for good measure, drop him and move to the next one. A ritual he used to repeat with every one. Gone 33 years now, rest his rat killin' doggie soul.

Nice Shot !!! Might have been close range but with the degree of difficulty you managed to subjected yourself to, it sounded like a very impressive shot indeed ;o) . Don't much matter if it's with air gun, either. Varminting's varminting. And that is one fat varmint. >> klallen

when I was in my early teens, me and my buddies ran amok in the fields around our houses, we found this old group of barns and chicken coops, walked in expecting to find wasp or hornets, our presence alerted the rats in there and rats went everywhere! we were in a living shooting gallery and we called it heaven! you could ease into a building that use to be a chicken coop and last guy in slammed the door! rats would run across the floor up a post and across a beam and then back down a 2x6 into a hole in the cement floor, we killed a many a rat in that building. it was one of the things I remember most about my teen years, all those buildings had rats, but that one had the best setup for shooting!
also had a little toy poodle that was very unpoodle like, followed me everytime I went out into the fields, and he was a rat killing machine! killed a heck of alot more rats than I did, found that if you waited by the rats back door you could get a shot at the rat when the dogs digging at the front spooked it out! course if you missed and then hollered for the dog he'd look at you like "huh" then go back to digging for the rat that just escaped!
hey thanks for bringing back memories that I treasure!

What brand of pistol is that in the pic Black 6? I've been considering getting something along the lines of yours, especially a pump model. I have a cheap CO2 pistol but would prefer to get something with a little more velocity and accuracy to it.

It's a Crosman American Classic .177 cal BB or Pellet. 20 years ago when I was living at home, I had one. Did a test one day and fired it 6 inches from a 3pound coffee can, which it just dented. A friend had an old pellet rifle that the pump was no good on so I took the barrel and with a drill and some drill bits I re machined the chamber and made it fit my pistol. Did the same test and this time the BB went through one side and had enough force to pucker and start to rip the other side (not all the way though, but it was embedded). Maintained the original rear sight on the pistol and original sight on the barrel. I will tell you that it was accurate too (this is the part I am not so proud of) I stepped out of the house one day and 50 feet away was a little tweedy bird. I thought "no way I will hit it" but I tried anyway. nailed it dead first shot. I no longer kill just to kill, personal reasons, but I will kill to get rid of disease and pest carrying rodents, and of course to fill a freezer.
I have been looking for another barrel so I can do it again, but pellet rifle barrels are hard to come by. So I am now looking for a Ruger 10/22 barrel to make a .22 cal air rifle, completely from scratch. Have 5 gal canisters of Co2 that needs to be used, the timer/trigger circuitry is drawn up waiting to built, and I have an idea of what shape I am going to carve that 6x12x36 chunk of wood for the stock.
As soon as I find a cheap, good barrel I can start.

Traditional "ratcatchers", (founders of the industry I'm in) used a combination of ferrets and terriers to kill rats. The dog handlers would take the dogs to the opposite side of the building from the ferret handlers. The ferrets would be loosed into the rat holes, and the rats would throw caution t o the winds trying to escape the ferrets. Ferrets can go thru any hole a rat can. The rats would run out of their tunnels and escape holes away from the ferrets, and the dogs would get them. The original hunter/killer team.
I'm going to buy one of these to try... http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?products_id=11582&osCsid=7c7fb3d220e07cf10c40e016d9f911a5Last edited on Fri Jun 30th, 2006 07:53 PM by Charley

I live trapped an eastern woodrat a few weeks ago, actually a very attractive animal, well built, nice shape, big eyes and ears and a furry tail, about like a squirrel with a crew cut.
The fur was very dense, almost as dense as mole fur, if the varmint had just forgone chewing on my floor joist at 3 AM he would still be around.
