Im fairly new at varmint hunting (very new actually) Ive only done it casually a couple of times but I want to really get into it, especilally coyotes. The few times Ive been out, we went at night, and havent had much succes beyond a bobcat I got last year. Do ya ll go more at night or during the day, or does it really just depend on the situation. Like I said I want to get into it, and the varmint forum on my site is not very active.

I may head out tomorrow to the farm, as long as the wind lets up a little, 30+mph winds here today, I dont think its worth the trip out there. I know we have alot of em, just never really gone after em 'cept if one passes during deer season. I been playing with some calls, and I got the week off, might as well get out there and try.

Jason,
Most folks I know around here tend to hunt during the night with an amber colored light. I myself prefer the daytime - early morning seems to be the best.
I too am very new to the whole coyote hunting bit and have usually had the most sightings in summer in the late evening. I've seen more during that time than any other.
But, this year has marked the start of calling and though I have yet to connect they are still fun just to get after! Mornings and evenings seem to be the concensus.

Jason, I've taken 'yotes morning, noon, evening and night. Of course I've also been skunked morning, noon, evening and night. I think luck plays a role in 'yote hunting, as well as calling and concealment.
Most coyotes do seem active in the early morning and evening from what I've observed, and those are probably the most productive times for calling. But I've stumbled across 'yotes in broad daylight and luckily had a gun with me.
Remember that when you use your calls to keep it short. Just a little at a time to get their interest. Keep your eyes open and look far and wide. You never know which way one might come from. Most of all, have fun with it.

I have killed more foxs at night when it is calm and snowing. I really prefer hunting the predators during daylight hours because i like using my longer range varmint rifles. I do best right at daylight and about a hour before darkness. I have never killed a coyote at night all have been taking during the daytime. At night i prefer a shotgun with Magnum # 4 shot in full choke.
