I am pretty inexperienced with predator calling. I've done a bit at night with taped calls and had some success. Other than that, not much to go on.
My situation is that we are seeing an uptick in coyote activity on our ranch. THis is particularly unpleasant given the investment we have in superior genetic whitetails and exotics. Any fawn going down to a yote could translate to serious $$$ down the tube. Yotes have not really been a problem for us in the past but I have seen less cottontails and other small game and more coyotes and coyote sign. Has me a little worried.
So, my situation is that I don't have a lot of time and I want to go easy and effective. I looked at electronic calls the other day and didn't know where to start. So, can anyone recommend some good electronic calls that are not too hard for a novice to get the hang of. Also, any that are effective for working at dusk and dawn as well (kind of hard to get out at night with little ones at home). Are the same calls that work on yotes good for bobcats and other predators as well? And finally, what are your thoughts on supplementing calls with bait (like a gut pile) or a mojo dove or something like that? I have heard that works as well.
Any info is appreciated. thanks

Hey bro, when I get back I will give you a crash course in predator calling 101. I will leave a few calls with you to use also that work well on yotes. If Tash still has it at BSB I wrote a long piece on basic coyote calling ,the stuff that works and is essential.I have killed a lot of coyotes in my time with the stuff I wrote about.Actualy calling coyotes is my favorite hunting, nothing is as challenging as predator hunting in my eyes.
I don`t use gut piles or bait.,Those dogs out there haven`t been pressured and will be prime for calling.I `ll show you everything I can in the course of while I`m there from 16 years of calling and killing coyotes effectively and routinely.

Good Camo increases your odds but the most important is the wind . Coyotes will all ways try to circle down wind because they trust their nose more than their eyes. Set up and call where you can get a shot when they try to circle down wind. The coyote pup in distress and the jack rabbit works the best here in the East, at least for me. I have a number of rifles built just for varmint calling. Here is another one i called in with a Turkey call while Turkey hunting. Super 90 Benelli with Remington Hevi-Shot # 5

I would agree FoxPro makes a good call. I was able to test about a dozen different electronic callers at Cabela's on their show room floor and you could hear the quality hands down.
I have an old Johnny Steward cassette player and use hand callers but the wind is indeed always an issue, and they always seem to have the edge on you so that's why I prefer bait. If you make a mistake with a caller (hand or electronic) you have educated old yellow tooth.
I have been able to call in wolf, coyote and fox with hand callers but my success rate is just better with bait. They focus on the bait and not the call.
Bait is a lazy method but it just seems to get results for me better than calling.
I'm still working on a page on my website but you can read a 2800 word article about bait hunting I wrote for a college class. Haaaaaaaa...a woman had to grade it, must of creeped her out but she never let on.
In answer to your gut pile question I have sat over our deer gut piles the next day and gotten action.

| I use the Johnny Stewart digital call and I have had a lot of luck with it. Coyotes, bobcats, crows, and even a hawk once.

I do not consider myself an expert caller, but I do get my share of yotes and bobcats with a fox or three thrown in.
Most of my calling is done with an old Dennis Kirk cassette caller, and I use Crit'R hand calls and some Burnham Bros hand calls, all have their place. I mainly use two calls, Cottontain Duet and Super Jack.
Wind is yore main enemy, as others have already stated. I always try and have the wind in my face or at least quartering in my face. I hunt mainly at night with one or more friends, but when I hunt in daylight I use a decoy. Lil Foxey.
Its a fox skin I tanned several yrs ago and I put it out on a stake anywhere from 30 to 50 yrds to one side and a bit in front of me and let it flap in the breeze. It does work as it gives the yote something they can see and seems to trump their nose if only long enough for me to get a shot. I generally call from one location 30 to 45 minutes then move a mile or so.
I use a custom built 22-250AI loaded with 60 grain vmax and also carre a 12ga loaded with #4 shot.
While I am not adverse to using bait, its jest not practical.
Hope this helps.

As I mentioned in previous post, I hunt mostly at night, but did not mention what type of light I used.
I use a Lightforce light that mounts directly on my scope, I painted the lens with two coats of Red Dykum. It has a switch that I mount on the foreend. It adds a little weight to the rifle, but since it already weighs in at 12 lbs what is a few mor ounces, besides we are shooting from a high seat mounted on back of a pickup.

I've been predator calling for over 40 years, started with a Herters call and have gone through more than I can count since then. I won't use an electronic call. I don't think its hunting when someone else, some electronic wizz, is doing the calling. Try mouth calls, open reed or diaphragm. You can get a lot more feeling and inflection out of them than from any electronic I have seen. Deer fawn bleet is absolutly murder in some times of year. Howler lets me locate and sometimes call them in and a not too loud rabbit screaming its death yell will close the deal for you. Try it you just might like it.

Mark V,
Have you had a chance to get rid of any yet?
The time of year for your investments to start giving birth is right around the corner, and the coyotes know it. Normally when I' start having problems with coyotes on the lease, I get out the time tested snares and start baiting them. But you can't really do that with the set-up you have.
I use a FoxPro ZR2, and it is what I would consider to be the very bottom of their line-up(it is hand held), you might want to consider something with a remote? Only 12 programmed calls, but you can record your own over them. Runs on 4 AA batteries for a very long time, and best of all produces results! Have used the Coyote Pup Distress, Jack Rabbit in Distress, and Crow Gathering(I like busting crows). This call brings them in.
Is it cheating? Not when you have thousands of dollars laying on the ground because a coyote felt the need to kill something! Use anything that is necessary to get results.
Scott (Gene will be there soon) B

You guys that have success calling I was wondering what your procedure is. I have a Fox Pro FX3 and used it three times this winter. Got a few dogs to come in but I think that we left some out there we should have gotten from the number of barks etc we heard.
Do you start off with a rabit call or a locator howl. Do you continue to call repeatedly or call once and then wait. My younger brother who I hunt with has a little prior experience, at least more than I have. He is very conservative with his calling. Meaning he calls once waits a long time then repeats with long pauses in between calls.
Anyway if anyone could give me a little info on what works for them I would really appreciate it. I am hunting in NE Nebraska in the hills and grasslands. There are areas that have tons of trees and we work around them. Again any info would be appreciated. We are done calling now till next winter but need to gain info now to use later.
