Any rabbit hunters on the board? When I was young my family raised beagles and I had some of the finest rabbit hounds ever seen.I had some of the best times of my life with an old .410 shotgun and beagles.

I love fried rabbit, wild or domestic. My beagles are long gone but one of these days I might get me two more and do a little training.

I haven't hunted rabbits in years. When I was growing up (southeast Alabama) there was a huge field of kudzu that I hunted. It was full of rabbits. We didn't have dogs, so we kicked them up. It was great practice. You had to balance letting them get far enough away for your pattern to open up, but not too far or you would loose sight of them.

My parents' family were from Arkansas, so I got to hunt "swampers" once. They were in the swamps, tough and big. Shooting their front legs never stopped them, they would lift their heads and just scoot on away. There were 6 of us, Grandaddy, Uncle Gene, Cousin Gary, Uncle Harvey, Daddy and me. We killed a bunch of them. After cleaning them my Grandmamma, Aunt Anne and Mamma ground them up and made rabbit sausage (very popular at the time) and man was it good.

I got to hunt rabbit with my Uncle Harvey and his dog, Whitey once. It was great! I was amazed that a dog knew to run the rabbits in a circle. Uncle Harvey didn't bother to straighten me out, he just let me go on. It was a while untill someone clued me in, I had wondered why everyone smiled or laughed when I was telling about it.

lol Mickey. It took me a while to learn too that a rabbit would make a big circle from where the dogs struck a bay.Just sit still and wait and the rabbit would be coming right back your way.

I haven`t hunted rabbits in years either but man it was fun..

Hey Timber back in the 70's i raised beagles and rabbit hunting was my passion. If the rabbit where around now, like  in those days , i would still be raising beagles. I loved rabbit hunting better than any big game hunting. I really miss it. I wish the deer where gone and the rabbits where back .

This is my buddy ,"Diamond" in the picture.I had only been out of the Army a month or so in this photo.Diamond was my dog for sure.He didn`t like anybody else very much but he would go anywhere I went.He is still alive but he is real old.He lives with my grandmother and she absolutely loves him.She wouldn`t take anything for this old beagle.

This isa pic of Diamond and Tucker.Tuker was a little bigger than Diamond and was a fine nose dog.Diamond`s resting his head on Tuckers back.

The big dog in this pic was Tigger. The finest rabbit beagle I have ever been around.I never had to tell him to get on the truck. At the sight of any gun he was at the tail gate of the truck waiting on you to let the gate down.:thumbs:The pup in the pic is a little gyp named Sassy....I have a bunch more pics.Didn`t mean to bore ya.I figured some of you fellas that like hunting dogs would like these..

Fine looking dogs. Never have rabbit hunted with a beagle...sounds fun. Gonna be a good year around here for them...seeing them everywhere. Guess I oughta break out the ole .22 this year. Have an ole .44 cap and ball revolver that has head shot a few also.

My great uncle Luther raised beagles for a number of years in the '40's to '70's, I got to help "train" them a few times, actually a plot to get Unc away from the house before his wife found something that needed doing.

That is another form of classical music.

I always used a semi-auto .22 for rabbits & squirrels. I tried to hit slow moving frizbee's with the 16, but always missed. I could nail a bird on the wing with the rifle tho. I enjoy hunting bunnies almost as much as the squirrels. Deer come in a close 3rd. Never used a dog either, so I had to kick em out myself.

These stories and pic's sure bring me back in time. I remember how I used to love the sound of the beagles running snowshoe hares in the mountains of Vermont. We had to wear snowshoes to get through the deep snow. It would amase me how those little hounds could plow through that stuff. I always used a .22 because shotshells were to expensive. I was taught to wait for the bunnie to circle then look for that big black eye. With all the surroundings being white as the rabbit, that eye stuck out like a sore thumb. That was many many years ago but thanks to you fella's for this post, it feels like yesterday.... Thanks.
