I was getting dressed to go to the gym this morning and my wife yelled at me that there was a coyote in the back yard, I looked out the window and there was a coyote sitting on its haunches looking for something to pounce on. I thought I would hav a little fun, so I opened the window and lip squeeked. It was raining like crazy.
The coyote snapped its head around, but right then another coyote sprang out of a shrub not ten yards from me. It looked at me, and ran around the side of the house. I told my wife there was two of them and proceeded to load my 204 Ruger. When I got to the front of the house he was about two hundred yards away, and I lip squeeked it in to about 30 yards. The 204 really does a good job on coyotes!

I sure like the sounds of them 204`s..But I aint made my mind up about havin one built.
I know you are pretty much like me from readin your posts and you are a devoted yote hunter.I think I am gonna start shootin a light bullet in my 22-250 and see what it`ll do in the field versus my dedicated yote rifle in 223 Rem.
I`ve had a 17 Remington project in the works for a while but I dont think it`ll be my yote rifle, the one I always carry.
Hard to beat a 223 in that role.
What do you think of that 204 past 300 yards?
Light bullets have always un-nerved me at longer range. The derned wind here blows hard most of the time and a long range shot requires a good knowledge of what a varmint bullet will do on out there..

I havent tried my 204 at 300 yards and longer, I did make a lazered 280 yard shot and the yote spun around 3or4 times and dropped. Im just learning what the 204 can really do and so far i like it....a lot. If you are interested in this caliber you can go to 204ruger.com and visit their forums, these guys are really nuts about this caliber, lots of information there.
I shot the 22-250 for thirty years of varmint calling and I still love it, but I think the 204 is going to be my go to coyote gun, exept when the wind is really blowing. Then Ill fall back on my trusty 22-250. I dont usually make a lot of long shots because the fun of calling for me, is to get them in as close as possible before popping them.
If you dont want to have a custom rifle made, you might look into a Howa 1500, mine is pillar bedded with the hogue overmoulded stock (which I really like) and with Sierra 39 gr Blitzkings it almost a one holer at 100 yards out of the box. Pretty nifty rifle for about $ 400.00. I got mine through the internet on gun genie.
Crazy2Medic feels the same way about his 204, and has a lot more experience with it than I have, maybe he will chime in.

i've toyed with the idea of getting a savage 12 in .204rug. this one caught my eye :

i like the accutrigger and 26" barrel offered. can't do the $850 for this particular set-up. just not there yet. i think it can be had for better less the fancy stock.

I dont know if you are familiar with the gallery of guns website, You can order guns via the internet and save a lot of money. I tried to look up the savage you posted but there are so many model 12's that i couldnt find the one you posted.
If your interested just go to galleryofguns.com and click on the gun genie link, and fill out the info. I saved a $100.00 on my rifle. they will list 3or4 dealers in the zip code you supply and you will be surprised at the price reduction the gun shops in your area will give you, versus what they will charge you if you just walk in and order a gun.
I hope everyone will give this site a looksee, I have bought three rifles from them without a hitch.

hey, vc . checked it out. that particular savage is the 12btcss. none found on the local search. found the 12lrpv, though. didn't even know something like this from savage existed ... a 30" barrel with the synthetic stock, accutrigger and a single shot. very pricey but interesting.
never used the resource before. if you find what you're looking for, do you actually buy through galleryofguns.com? or do ya go to the location they tell ya they've found the firearms at? how's the transaction play out?

Klallen.
Its really easy, after you fill in the info on the gun genie, it will take you to a page that displays the rifles in the catagory that you selected.
find the rifle that you are interested in and click on "CHOOSE'"
another page with specifications for the rifle will come up, click on "INSTANT QUOTE"
The page with dealers in the zip code area you selected will come up, with the prices the dealers will charge. when you find a price (the cheapest) you can live with just click on "ACCEPT OFFER)
When the next page opens, you just fill in the information and follow the directions, on one of the pages you will have to give a credit card info for the deposit. ( if anything happens that cancels the order you get your deposit back)
Once you complete the information and accept the offer, the gallery of guns will ship the rifle to the dealer you have selected, and they will notify you that it has shipped. (in my cases the rifle shipped the very next day.)
Then they will send you an e-mail with a tracking number so you can track the rifle from point of origin to the final destination. they used federal express on my orders.
When the dealer gets the rifle he will notify you, and you go down and pay the balance and pick up your gun. I have a concealed carry license so in Idaho i dont have a waiting period or a background check, you might have to go through that crap.
I tracked my rifles and when it showed delivered to the dealer, i called them, I didnt wait for them to call me ( couldnt wait!)
One other thing I did is I put in different zip codes near my area and that way I got more dealer selections. I think they put in an expanded search so you can find dealers within a fifty or hundered mile radius.
Anyway, thats all there is to it, like I said I saved a hundred bucks on my Howa 1500 300 Win Mag
Hope this works for you If you have any other questions just give me a shout.

Timber I've been trying to sell you on a .204 for awhile! as serious as you are about yotes, I think you should at least try a .204 and if you don't like it you can box it up an send it to me! My custom .204 and my boy's howa are good out to 400yds, I've seen my boy consistantly take jackrabbits and prairie dogs at that range! my eyes ain't as good as his, but I dropped a jack at 380yds last year! We are leaving for dumas, TX on the 15th I'll bring back pics! for yotes I'd stick with the 39gr sierras or 40gr v-max's, the 35gr bergers don't seem to be as destructive, if you want to keep the pelts!
but as varmint caller stated those howa's are damn accurate, my boy loves his and anything within 400yds is dead if he sees it!
one last selling point check the ballistics on a 40gr out of a .204 and compare to .223, 40gr .223 drops 17.6 inches at 400yds, a 40gr .204 drops 13.2, the .223 produces 330ft/lbs at 400yds, .204 is 526ft/lbs at 400yds my 2cents!

I have been shooting the .204 on prairie dogs for the past 4 years. Previously used a 22-250 on dogs and ground hogs for about 35 years. i was hunting with a .222 before remington legitimized the .22-250, and have used the .243 and 6mm quite a bit. I like the .204 very well, but it won't do anything the .22-250 won't do. I'm hoping it winds up being a little easier on barrels than the .22-250, but that is unproven so far. I sure wouldn't trade off a good .22-250 for a .204, expecting an increase in performance. It won't happen. I'm currently having my .204 re-barreled because the original remington hammer forged barrel was a piece of s%(*. I'll let everybody know how that works out. PS I'm better able to spot my own shots past 200 yards with the .204 than the .22-250 due to less recoil. I do like that very much when shooting prairie dogs.

how the heck would you even handle a bullet that tiny? tweezers?
reloading my .223 using calhoon's light 37 gr. dhp's, they were a little tricky to handle with the fingers. no idea how you'd do it with a 10 - 18 gr. bullet.
oh yeah ... nope, i don't own anything 14 cal.

I have seen a couple of custom built 14 calibers. It is sort like a 22-250, but miniturized. I believe one of them was built about a necked down 223.
