I see the post from oldbikewrench below but the other day a gun smith friend of mine and I were talking and it seems like people don't squirrel hunt like they use to.
I have squirrels all around me, more than I've ever seen by the river but I haven't hunted them in 30 years.
When I was a kid I went up and down the river by my house hunting squirrels. Sometimes all the kids that lived by me (5 or 6 of us) would together and hunt. Now none of the kids that live by me hunt them.
Its kind of sad and its also sad because fried-up they taste good.

I take them out from my deck some days and other times I have to hike to the tree line behind my backstop.
Anyone have any really good recipes for squirrel?

squirrel huntin is fun ! ( it's one of the few critters i dont need a call for )umm i prefer a 22 not a 12 gauge....kinda defeats the whole purpose
being as it's a rich meat several things work great for cooking .personally i'm kinda fond of the southwestern flavor and often make a cornmeal and chili batter for good ol deep fryin',some one told me it was good baked with a orange glaze .. i cant vouch for that lolz but i expect it'd be edible it does decent onna grill with bbq sauce ,slice some green pears and season with a dash of nutmeg n brown sugar on the cut side cook until tender to go with the critters....

Jerry, This is a good recipe for those big old fox squirrels. Par boil the squirrel until tender and pull the meat off the bones. Mix the pulled meat in mushroom gravy and serve over a pile of sage dressing made with mushrooms, onions and celery. Couple of scoops of that home canned corn on the side and you should be contented in no time. RD

I either fry them,or grill wrapped in tin foil,if they are old and tough they go on grill a little oil or butter,a little liquid smoke, some onion whatever else sounds good at the time and wrap in foil cook fairly slow and they are tender and delicious.
I hunt the little buggers with a 40 cal.kentucky flinchlock, they are my favorite thing to hunt and my favorite game to eat a win win deal

Wheezer, Years ago I use to load Lead Round ball in my Super Blackhawk. With about 4-5 grains of Hercules Unique powder.
Seat the ball just past the Ogive and crimp. the seater will shave a nice ring of lead off with each ball so you have to check and clean the dies frequently.
I played around with this just for the purpose of small game hunting with my Super Black Hawk and it worked surprisingly well.
These will take a squirrel down easily, plus shooting the unique there is enough smoke and fouling that you would swear that you were using Black Powder.
Another thing fun about this load is the ball travels slow enough you can see it in flight.
The only time I have ever had a Game Warden come up to check my license in the woods was once when Squirrel hunting with this rig. A 7 1/2" Bbl Super Black Hawk, with a Burris 3X scope atop it. Took me a little while,a lot of talk and firing off a shot before convincing the agent that I was indeed after Squirrels and not poaching Deer.

funny you mentioned a rb load.I bought several moulds just for the purpose of loading for small game.In my 32 mag single six I shoot a triple ball load that hits a 25 yard target 3 times in a spot the size of a sqirrel head.Havent had much time to thin out the tree rats with it yet but I have been feedin them little turds for some time and hope they will feed me.

We have lots of fresh veggies and spices to cook with and fresh corn on the side.
The squirrels right now are so close that 22 Short will dispatch them.
I was thinking of squirrel stuffed green peppers this weekend for diner.

Parboiling then frying is my prefered way. I use a 22 rimfire and do head shots. Saves the meat. When a very young man a buddy and I went hunting squirrels. We had 28 bullets and came back with 27 squirrels. We walked single file about 100 feet apart. The front man would make a bit of racket by shaking bushes pulling vines, etc. Squirrels would slide around away from the noise and I would pick them off. Works great until you pick up a semi dead one--they bite like a souped up crocodile on amhetimines--lol, wc

-6, I hear you on this one and certainly don't mean to make light of your predicament here as I'm sure it could be a bit exciting. But it might not be quite as exhilerating as creasing one between the ears and having him come back to life inside your game vest. Did you know that some of those vests are accessable via inside pockets? Did you know that a pissed off squirrel has inside pocket detector radar? Rockydog

Squirrel hunting is my favorite. I use a Savage Mark II-FV in .22 LR. And the season started August 1st. Though the Reds are still nursing the young and will be for another month or so. So I won't be hunting squirrels until the end of Oct. Thats O.K. dove started today and turkey starts the 15th.

Best Squirell recipe I know of was told to me by an Old Timer friend of my Dad's.
Skin and gut the Squirell and wash it thouroughly...Wrap the squirell in strips of bacon and bake in the oven at 350 degrees Farenheit for 50 minutes, turn the heat up to 400 degrees and bake an additional 15 minutes.
Remove from oven and remove the bacon strips.
Throw the squirell out the back door to the dogs and eat the bacon..Yum Yum.
I was told that this recipe works well for Mourning Dove too.(-:Last edited on Fri Sep 18th, 2009 02:12 AM by rat31465
