Fella's;

I've got Mr. Swift, & he's a helluva coyote stomper.  But mine's on a Ruger #1V & was bought to be a prairie dog gun, so it's a little heavy to be trampin' around coyote huntin'.  So I've switched.

The current coyote gun is a 6mm Remington.  Loaded with the 75 grain V-Max from Hornady, it's stunningly accurate and my-O-my, what it does on the far end has to be seen to be believed.

For a very long time I used a 257 WBY mag and a 22-250 for coyotes, both are excellent dog busters.

Now that im older and wiser, I use a 204 Ruger.

First one I ever sent back to his ancestors from the Mojave Desert of Southern Cal made the trip courtesy of (what is now known as) an H&R Handy Rifle in .44 Rem Mag.

Not long after that, another one near Kemmerer, Wyo. went to his eternal reward his ticket punched with a .303 British out of an SMLE.

Others, as Ike Clanton said in "Tombstone", went "to hell on a shutter" due to hot lead injections from 7.62x39, .30-'06, and even the lowly .22LR. My favorite load for just about everything that needs a scope to be shot at effectively is .30-'06, a 165 grain boat tail at about 2800fps. I like a good dose of H380 powder to get it there.

Cablea's has a sale on Friday - there's a .17HMR with a scope already mounted on sale for a pretty good price that I might pick up.

Mine is a custom 6mm with the faster twist than Remingtons original 244.She is a deadly tack driver with 85 grain Sierra Gamekings and the 80 grain varminter`s..
anyways,good calling and good hunting:thumbs:

I've busted a lot of yotes with my 6mm Model 700 varmit special. Mostly with a Sierra 60g HP over IMR4350. It's not pelt friendly under 100 yds but beyond that not too bad. The problem is just the heft and long barrel for everyday use. Now I just mainly use my pickup gun that I always have in case of a yote or feral hog while out in the pastures. It being a Rem 700 SS in .25-06 stuffed with 115 X-bullets over RL22. I guess it's surpassed my 17 Rem, 220 Swift, 6mm Rem, and Mini-14 as far as coyote kills. That's about all I do with them anymore. Kill 'em and hang 'em up as a warning to the next generation.

.243 107 SMK over 49.5gr retumbo, 3,000fps+  good long range/wind if you want hide.

If you don't want hide, either of these work well, inside of 300 yds, you ain't gonna have much left though.

270wsm  90gr sierra hp over 73gr H4831, 3,700fps+ light wind

270wsm  135 SMK over 64gr H4831, 3,200fps+ for wind and long shots.

I still stand by using the 300 RUM as a coyote cartridge. Use these at full loads and use a 150 grain bullet with a ballistic tip, at 3,300fps and that puppy will ne down from just about place ypu hit it.

I got to agree with jerry, love the 300 rum for blasting coyotes. Ive shot them with everything from shotguns and 22 s up to the 338 win mag ...talk about a mess that thing left !!!! But my best was with the 300 RUM and 190 grain berger VLDs . I was with the ranch owner and he had several coyotes hanging around his cattle so i grazed 1 in the rear at 520 yds with the 300 rum ( my bad ) i was excited what can i say ,its still fun watching them do the roundy round. Then 1 pops out the door of this old shack ,leica rangefinder says 1050 so i let one fly and it hits right between his legs so he ran out and looked all over ,couldnt figure out where it came from , so i let her fly again and took it right in the guts at 1050 yds confirmed. That was fun. we drive over there and are lookin at that 1 ( full of mange ) and another takes off just to our left and he ,the rancher , drills it with his 300 win mag. Naturally he had to shoot it again just to make sure it was completely dead WAY OVERKILL but it was full of mange also. Coyote problem taken care of. 3 coyotes 30 minutes  ,maybe the mange had something to do with them messing with the calves. Looking for a easy meal perhaps. The rancher was happy that day and thats all that matters !!

That one took a moly coated 115g Barnes X-bullet over RL22 at about 70 yds. It was quartering away so the shot went in on the off hip on the other side and traveled diagonally across before coming out on that front right shoulder. I've never had one run off after getting a piece of that .25-06

The 6mm isn't usually that bad....LOL (on the hide I mean)

A wildlife classmate of mine was living on a ranch in Tanque Verde Wash east of Tucson when the owner located a feral domestic tom cat about the size of a bobcat that was taking out the gambels quail so he asked my friend who was a hunter to shoot it with his 30-06.My friend shot it but it took 7 or 8 shots to kill it and all of the shots were direct hits.

Sako, Tomcats are pound for pound the toughest animals I've ever shot. They can soak up a lot of .22 RF ammo too. I don't think I've ever killed one stone dead on the first shot with anything smaller than an F250 4WD. RD

Yep them sob's are tough well untill they take a 40 grain ballistic tip at 4350 fps out of a Swift at 60 yds right in the spinchter:lol: turns em inside out in short order even the ravens had a hard time finding pieces big enough to bother with. They sure do not like 1-5/8 ounces of copper plated BB's out of the old 12 bore out to 50 yards either:whiteflag:
