You have the same Savage as I have. Mine is in .223 Rem. It wouldn't shoot for s***, so I tried different lods with no help. So I took it out of the stock and cleaned her up, adjusted the trigger, put it back in and reshot it and it grouped at a half inch compared to about 2.5" before.
GutShot are ya talking about the model 10 Tactical? or the 12 BVSS?
I have both the model 10 being in 308 Winchester and the 12 BVSS in 223 Ackley Improved.
The 308 is wicked with my 150 grain Nosler BT`s ,165 grain Hornday SST`s and 168 grain Matchkings.
I whipped a buddy of mine shooting a Steyr 308.
It wasn`t a fair shoot though,he was shooting Black Hills 168 grain stuff(Black Hills is good stuff btw)
I was shooting a 168 grain Sierra Matchking stoked with Varget.
The model 12 BVSS I received as a Christmas present some years ago.I already owned two 223`s an my little Weatherby won out as a calling rifle(the 12 is way too heavy to hump three or four miles to move calling stands)
So I sent if off to Kirby Allen (Allen Precision Shooting) and had him recut the chamber to 223 Ack.
As some of you recall when I first got the rifle, I had hell with it.8 or 10 shots and my groups went to hell, about like you spoke of Gutshot. The rifle broke in though after a 100 or so shots an cleaning the heck out of it every 10 shots.
I haven`t used it as a yote rifle yet as I still prefer my Weatherby in 223 Rem.It takes the wet weather an has a 6x24 mildot on it.
The Savage BVSS12 is more than capable with a 4x16 Millet but its just too darned heavy to pack. I whacked a blackbuck doe antelope with it when I was home on leave in 07..and she handled business well. The accuracy is there now so who knows, maybe I`ll put her in the field again but mostly I`m thinking a prairie dog rig for now.

I use a 45-70 or a 300 Rum, or any gross over kill rifle at had. Right now I am using a Ruger Mini 30, hand loads with .308 spire point bullets, I think it maybe a little light. Maybe next time I will use my Marlin in 35 Rem.

Back in my early High School days I went to school at Gainesville High. Most of the guys I hunted with had access to many rifle/cartridge combo's from their families. I wasn't so fortunate and so made due with what was available to me. I killed just as many coyotes, maybe even more using little more than an old Marlin .22 Mag and a well used Savage chambered in .270 Win. The .270 may have been a little overkill, but there were few times when a coyote was out of range for that rifle/cartridge even on the windiest of days.

Timberghozt,
Mine is a model 10 with 20" barrel. How do you like you AI? Is it worth reaming out? What did it set you back? I've hunted with mine but never have shot anything, but with FMJs it is deadly on snapping turtles. I use 60 grn. Hornadys with Varget.

Gutshot. I paid I think 250 bucks for Kirby to set it back and rechamber.Kirby is one wicked smith and I got my monies worth. With the heavier bullets I picked up 200 feet per second more with BL(C)2 but where it shines in a small bore is with the light bullets,40 grain.I am a yote hunter and it is my passion, even more than big whitetails and tusker boar hogs.
Kirby chronographed a 40 grain Sierra blitz at velocities embarrassingly close to 22-250 velocities. It didn`t whip a 22-250, but it danged sure could get close.
I am not sold that any improved chambering except the 25-06 Ackley and only with super slow burning powders and the 257 Roberts Improved give their all from improved chamberings, but this lil 223 Ackley is a nasty little critter on the bench.

Guys,
Come on, lets get to some real nasty calibers, 375 RUM, 458 Win Mag, 600 Nitro Express.
I shoot a coyote at about 80 yards with a 300 RUM, and forgive me, factory ammo, it turned that puppy inside out and I am not sure where the bullet end up, just not in the coyote.

I've wacked many coyote with a #1 Ruger .220 Swift and this one was taken with my Ruger 77 .220 Rocket. a couple days ago. Really hit the ground hard.
Problem with the Swift is getting to be the price of Brass - and after I shoot the Swift I anneal the brass, fireform it the shoot it in the Rocket. It works out real good.
Both have excellent velocity and I am shooting 69, 75, 77 and 80 gr Nosler Seirra and Hornady. @ 3100-3200 fps. Shoots real tight groups.

That'd be the same for using my .308 (poor, no other choices) and the 110Gr V-Max load.
The 52gr HP SABOT round might leave some fur on tho, 3980fps.............

I generally use something like Marlin 336 in 30-30 or my Mini 30 on Yotes. Once in a while I will a 223, but the most spectacular impact on Yote that I ever saw was the one I shoot my 300 RUM, blew the exit side almost completely away, I don't mean a 6 inch hole, I mean that side was almost completely gone and the bullet almost sucked the impact thru with it.
No hide from that one.

Heck, if you just make it a near miss, you kill 'em clean just from the shock wave going by them.

While on a Colorado hunting trip a nothern cal hunter told us about a friend with 50 bmg rifle who spotted a coyote on a ridge, laid the rifle on the hood of his p/u,scoped the coyote and pulled the trigger he missed the coyote but the round pulverized his windshield. He became the talk of the town his friend said.

Wonder what the paint job looked like? I made a mess of my hood and I was using my early Model 70 .375H/H. Gotta remember to throw your coat down real fast when setting up.
Wouldn't help the windshield much.
