To be honest I really don't know if I belong here and it is QUITE alright to say so if that is true. I'm, according to our government, disabled. I have osteoporrsis and have broken my back 3 different times. Total of 8 or 9 compressed verts and, the bad news, one burst fracture. I have broken ribs so many times I have lost count but it usually works out to a couple a year. Not the last one but the one before that I broke by just rolling over in bed wrong! I have broken several while working on cars (I've always done my own work and am an ex roadracer and private pilot) a couple just from pulling on a wrench too hard. Another one was broke by leaning on the front seat too hard with my chest while working on clutch pedal. Needless to say I'm working on our cars much less than before. This is kinda funny, I have broken various toes something like 60 or 70 times. Get up at night to go pee and stub toe, bang! Broken toe. Did you know that broken toes hurt so bad you just HAVE to laugh? I know that sounds weird but it's true.
So back to see if i belong here, I really don't know. You see I can still walk, my orthopedic surgeon says "You are a lucky S.O.B. to be able to walk through my door" Sometimes I can only walk to the 50 yard line at the range and back with lots of pain, other times I could walk a mile or a bit more. I am 4 full inches shorter than when I graduated from high school because of the spinal compressions. But I can do alot of normal stuff, it is just hard. I can mow the yard. Driving is NO problem but getting in and out of the car can be.
I remarried one year ago. I was married to my high school sweet heart for 27 years but the last time I got hurt (spinal compressionfractures, 19 days in hosipital and many months to get almost back to where I was after second back injury) she was going through very bad times with being layed off after working for 16 years and planning for retirement from that company. She divorced me for several reasons but one was she was very afraid of having to take care of me for the rest of her life. Can't blame her I guess, I can for OTHER thing but this is not the place or the time. Well, nobody took care of me the last 10 years since then. 3 years ago I found another lady that I graduated H.S. with in 1971 (I'll be 54 on Friday). We were fond of each other back then but I was already going with my wife to be. Found her on, believe it or not, Classmates .com!!! We started writing, then calling and one thing lead to another an 3 years ago I packed up and moved from CA to TN to be with her and last year we got married. She works at Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital in Nashville.
That was agood thing for me as she makes sure I take care of myself. Currently I am in a 6 week aqua therapy working out three times a week in the pool at the main Vanderbilt Hospital. Each work out is a bit over an hour and I hurt real good afterward .
I shoot almost every week but I think my hunting days are done. Sometimes I get the urge to go small game hunting but mobility can be a problem. I only hunted large game once when I went pig hunting in CA YEARS ago. But what would I do if I did get a pig or a deer (there are lot's of both in TN, I think the deer limit is 6 of one kind and a cuople more of the antlered) but what the heck would I do if I GOT one? Can't lift it, can't pack it out. Sometimes I'd like to experience that but I'm guessing those days are over too. Look, I'm NOT whining here. I'm in ALOT of pain every minute of every day despite taking a fair amount of pain meds but I'm still vertical. I know many off you guys are in WAY worse shape. I'm not in a wheel chair. I recently fell three times in a month and a half the last one while camping in the Mojave desert for a week. Ended up in shock, shivering and puking even though it was 100 degrees out. Right shoulder is all mess. But everytime I fall It scares me to death because I know there is a chance that one of these times I won't get back up. I'm sorry you guys but today is just one of those horrible days when it hits you, when you realize where you are in life. I don't mean to whine at all. That isn't the point. The point is now you know who and where I am in life and I wonder if I belong here, in THIS forum, or am I not that far gone yet by the way you determine who posts here and who does not. Understand? Everyday I thank God I can walk, everyday it gets harder to walk. Does that make sense? Bless everyone of you, thanks for listening and do not hold any punches when you answer, if you choose to. Take care, Vince

Doc Doc maybe you misunderstood. I'm not worried about belonging to the site. I was asking about the diabled forum. Sometimes it is hard to understand just what "disabled" is. If you are in a chair no one questions that. But I look "normal" and I have had the negative reaction from both sides. Many people figure if you are vertical and can drive how can you be disabled? Then I have had the opposite /same reaction for people that are hurt worse than I am that if I am vertical I can't be hurt that bad. Doc, I know it sounds crazy but I was trying to get a feel for where that line is drawn. I will remain here at Handloaders Bench, no doubt about that. I guess I am asking for directions about being disabled. Today was a horrible day as far as pain and it's complcations and then this evening, After writing this I fell down the stairs off our back porch. Luckily my little 97 Ford Aspire was right there and I landed on the hood and fenders. NOW I really hurt. Falling scares the crap out of me. I don't scare easily. My ex used to call me a guy that is too brave for his own good. God, I seem to have started something dumb. I don't even know what I'm asking except that I would like to learn about being disabled and still be able to hunt or at least be able to get further in the outdoors. I'm thinking you guys know more about that than I do. The loading/shooting thing is easy. I've kind of been leading edge on that for close to 30 years. But as my body loses more and more of it's abilities how do I still be an outdoorsman or does that go away? I guess THAT is what I'm not sure of. That is where I need guidance and THAT is where I'm asking if this part of the forum is where I should be. Does that make more sense now? I am just having a very hard time articulating what I need. Thanks for any ideas or assistance. Very sorry for the confusion.

Vincent;
You found a great bunch of guys and a couple of them have some good resources to help us get out there and BE OUTDOORSMEN still. Look for WildBill
About belonging in 'this' forum; you bet you do. I am/was well let's see now - I was a disabled vet, now they found how to "FIX" my spine so I am a 'recovering' disabled vet. They say I may get back to 'most' normal activities 'someday'...
Well I was already able to get off all of the narcotics ( and believe me I was on the highest; read nearly leathal ) still in pain every day and don't get here or to the bench for more then a few hours every few days - but now at least I can sit up straight and even walk and stand for more then 15 min's at a time.
The thing is if a guy like me who is on the way back up can hang here and have some fun then surly you can!!!
Oh yeah I understand all too well about the strange looks and comments you get when you use the blue parking spot then get out and walk but I say - well never mind what I say just smile and do it cuz we earned it just by getting up today.
anyway welcome to the board and the dieharder hunters forum -

Thanks Black Elk. I do not use the "handicapped" parking. Never even asked about it. I could probably get it but why? I NEED the exercise of walking a bit further but the main reason is there are just too many people out there like you, especially the elderly disabled, that need it far worse than I do. Here in Nashville I see it all the time where some young, healthy guy drives Grannies car to K-Mart and zips right to the front of the lot and grabs one of those spots, I want to slap him. It happened in CA (Remember when guys on the USC or UCLA football teams were getting the passes?) to but it seems bad here. I worked with a guy there that was the most self centered person I ever met, that used to rail against the handicapped spots being there and saying that this is a dog eat dog world and if they could not compete for a spot up close than they just should not come to the store!! This guy had the hugest Napolean complex ever and a racial chip on his shoulder that between the two he hated most of the world.
I also have not asked for one just because I'm me. I'm fighting this thing tooth and nail and getting one would, for me I'm saying now, just for me, be admitting another small defeat in the fight to keep my legs underneath me. That is also why I am working out in the pool for 1.5 hours 3 times a week. THAT is killing me in some ways but it has already helped after only two weeks.
I take what the pain Doc calls a moderate dose of methadone for the pain and honestly I don't see that going away, but who knows what the future brings. I took Vicodin or Lorcet (same thing, Hydrocodin and acedomenaphin) for 15 years and when I finally got a doc that understood pain I asked to get off that because the acedomenaphin (Tylenol) is really bad for you over long periods. He came up with the methadone which I take with Atavan and a new med called Lyrica. Lyrica treats "nerve pain", my thighs felt either completely numb, which is alright, or like when your foot is "asleep" and you get that extremely strong pins and needles effect. It seems to be an effective combo. I'm still in pain every minute of every day but this combo make it bearable
Well I've now rambled into another post that looks like a book, I will keep a eye out for WildBill's posts. Thank you for your kindnes and here's hoping you have MUCH further success in your rcovery. Vince

Sorry it took so long for me to post. I was fishin all day yesterday. 1 little Pike and a Perch. Lots of scenery though. Wish I'd have brought the camera. We had geese swim by. A hen mallard flew into my line when she was landing, and she swam around the pier a few times. A pair of swans. A pelicken.
Vincent, I say you belong. Our disabilities may be different and have different saverities. But like Doc said we all have some sort of disability. Some maybe minor, some maybe major. You may be able to help someone with the same or simaler disabilty as yours, do something they never thought they could. There might be somebody out there with an idea for you that you haven't thought of to help you do something easier.
So any time we have a member that is living with any sort of disability I see them as a benificial resource to this forum. There are people out there who will benifit from our knoledge.
We don't focus on peoples disabilities, we focus on there abilities.

Hey Vincent, welcome aboard bud. There are a few of us disabled guys here at HB and believe me when I tell ya my friend, you will not find a better bunch of guys than what there is right here. It matters not if you're a pro athlete or just a spectator. When you are here at Handloaders, your just one of the guys. I know because I no longer reload because I sufferd a major stroke after multiple trauma. I no longer shoot as straight as I used to and half the time I don't make a damn bit of sense on what I'm trying to say. But guess what???..... these fella's here still give me all the respect in the world. So don't worry about wondering if you belong here or not, hell, I bet you could teach us a thing or two bud. So pull up a stump and sit a spell my friend.

Where do i start, I'm disabled too. I should of won an oscar for fooling my last employer for the past 12 or so years that i was having health problems that were getting worse every year. My knees are wornout, I've had two knee operations plus my health is so bad right now they won't even think of replacing them, i'm a high risk. I can't walk very far nor stand up for too long without taking a break to sit and rest. I was depressed for the first years but now i'm in a much better state of mind. I realize life isn't over its just the next chapter in our lives thats beginning. Hey were still on the green side right? Everyday when i wake up i realize that god has given me another day to enjoy life to the fullest, well as much as i can. Sometimes i get to go fishing for an hour or two but the pain can get bad after 15 minutes of fishing but at least i get out for a while. I just make do with what little i have left.
Were all pretty much in the same boat one way or another trust me. My only regret is that no one told me my life would go this route when i was youger or i would of partied harder when i was younger. Now i look at things i just can't do anymore and it hurts because i was always active. I guess i worked too hard and wore myself out too soon I should of saved some for later.

You know its so easy to become negative and think life will be over if we become disabled. Its really another chapter of our life ready to start again. With a disability we really have to choice when it happens or if it happens. It can happen to any one at anytime. While its something we can't control nor turn on and off at anytime were stuck with it for the rest of our lives and have to deal with it. Forget the depression and get on the bright side were still alive.
DISABLED? Start doing what you can to enjoy life what ever you can do like read a book, go fishing, go hunting or just sit and watch the corn grow. If your depressed get help, they can help you, trust me i know.
With the word "retire" so many work thru there late 60's into there 70's. My Dad did work until he passed away. What are really the Golden Years? It seems to me the older citizens of this country are working longer. There can be two causes of this, one is they need the extra cash because they didn't save for there retirement and the other is they think that life is over if they do retire. The younger pweople should be looking at this right now and saying hey i better get a 401 or IRA retirement plan right now and plan ahead now for my retirement while i'm in my 20's, 30's, 40's and even your early 50's its not too late to save something now. Trust me life goes by really slow and all of a sudden overnite your the oldest member of your family and the ones who you thouth were old passed on already. I'm sure thats happening to many of us right now. My point is if you young right now its time to take control of your life and really plan for the future. If your fortunate to have a steady job you can live cheap enough to save a litte for your retirement now. Don't get caught up living for today because tomorrow may never come. Its a 100% sure gamble your going to grow old and retire. I didn't start saving until i was 35 and now i'm glad i did. I had no one to tell me this or guide me when i was younger and i wish i did that why i'm saying this now because i know there are more out there like me too. Get a 401 or IRA and put in what you can to make it work now while your young. Call it the blackhole and forget about it until you retire. Or just save what you can without touching it. Watching my dad work into his 70's until he got sick has surely woke me up. Don't let this happen to you plan ahead now for it. I'm not rich, i'm very frugal with my money but yet enjoy what I can do. I admit I should of saved sooner that was my mistake so you can avoid that. Money can't make you happy. I can sit in my yard and watch the corn grow and be happy. Money makes us survive it pays our bills and feeds us. All i'm saying is you have to have a plan now before its too late.
RETIREMENT? Think about it now.........

Vince..I just joined recently-well I think I joined a longer time ago but reformatting a few times and I lost this site for awhile....
I feel that I qualify for admittance and, as these other good people said, they believe you do also..
I belong to a couple other great sites just for disabled sportsmen/women..and they are just full of really decent, great people...I bet you will find the same thing here...
As i said, I'm relatively new here so i don't want to say too much until people get to know me a little better..
But...LOL
When I was 16 I fell an honest 20 feet out of a tree Coonhunting back in Penna.
That started my journey with pain. When I was 21 I pulled out to make aleft turn onto a major highway. I made it into the turning lane and some kid coming home from college picked that time to fall asleep or wake up became disoriented and hit me right at my front door post at 55-60 MPH. Broke my neck and the side whiplash evidently shifted my spine and xrays showed later that my neck was curved backwards form a normal neck.. The 1960 Chevy was a mess...The engine was upside down under the hood, torn out of the tranny and the motormounts. The backseat was in the trunk..All 4 tires flattened and the roof came to a point...
Later I went down flight of about 20 steel clad steps...That kinda hurt.LOL
Then surgery to fix my neck. Then I decided to go back to school after 17 years out of high school. Got a degree in Wildlife from Penn State and a degree in Forest Biology from the Univ. Of Montana..
In my third year of working for the Forest service and fall a lousy 10-12 feet in the steep mountains of western Montana and that is what did me in, incredible...
Now I have the spurs back in my neck, no disc at both 5/6 and 6/7 cervical..degenerative disc disease...Nerve root irritation, arthritis, of course...Cortisone shots every 2 months..They knda hurt...
If I am awake, I am in pain. If I am asleep, pain wakes me up.
have a tilt to my neck and a drooping shoulder and now both feet hurt so bad, sometimes i can't walk, and sometimes I could walk a mile..
So I know from whence you come my friend and i sympathize with you and everyone here that has pain..
I do have a great faith and a belief in God, so that helps a lot..
take care, all of you guys.. Sorry for the small novel...

What a surprise to See this old thing dug up. After this was written thing got worse. Th methadone was NOT the med for me as it turns out. Fell asleep STANDING UP! woke up pedaling backward and slammed a door with my head. The door had never closed due to a crooked jam but it closed that night!!! Woke up confused laying on the flood with hundreds of splinters all over and around me.
Severe concussion they said. They also said 6 to 8 weeks. That just after my last post and I am just getting over the damage now. For those of you that have never had a brain injury it is really weird. You are just not you. I am Ex road racer and pride myself on my driving. Driving became a struggle just to get from point A to point B. I could not work out in the pool. Meds were changed the next day! This smiley is funny but it is kind of how I felt in part. I could NOT use written instruction for about 4 months. I forgot everything I read as soon as I put it down. VERY frustrating to learn to use a new camera.
Long story short, last month I got back in the pool and things are almost totally gone. Somewhere I kinda feel like I lost some things permanently......it is just a vague, nagging sort of thing. But I'm happy to be with my loving wife, She helped me all along the way, I'm pretty much back to my version of normal......what ever that is

belonging? If you love guns and reloading .....I have not seen a "disabled" person on this board. You belong. Dont matter if you can walk or not .... can you shoot? If you got a love for guns , reloading , outdoors etc. then you belong. not just in disabled shooters but the whole forum. Im just disabled in mind function but I still visit disabled section cuz I might learn something new. WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!!

Hey, thanks I really like this place. I spend most of my time on RimfireCentral.com. I have been reloading for 27 years and one round that I truly enjoy is the 22 Hornet. The first round I ever loaded for. I spent a WONDERFUL day at the range today with a couple club members. My little CZ 527 American 22 Hornet. Because of it's Mable stock I named it Blondie. The first rifle I ever named.
Today was a typical day for Blondie. I switched scopes so I had some resighting to do. Figured I might as well shoot groups as well. Largest 5 round group @100 yards was about .710" The smallest for the "inaccurate Hornet? .375". I think the larger groups were pretty much due to the first mirage of the year. It was swimming pretty hard. The load: Remington neck sized case. Fed small PISTOL primer. 13.0 grs of Lil Gun and Hornady's cute little 35 gr V-Max. They finished up with a light kiss of a Lee Factory Crimp Die that I am experimenting with.
On top of that I was shooting my "SuperStock" 10/22. I had pinned the bolt this past week and had changed to a David Tubbs mainspring. It had been choking on subsonic and mid velocity very badly. Shooting SK Standard Plus 10 of the 12 groups were under 1/4" at 25 yards (we have 2 contests or accuracy "lists" at RFC and I was shooting to place this rifle on the 3rd of those lists) They measured from .170 to .292. These were all shot "free recoil".
A GREAT spring day at the range......It felt very, very good. Thanks you guys, thanks a lot
