I am writing about a hunting opportunity for disabled huntersI work for the US Fish and Wildlife Service and my job is to convert closed military bases into National Wildlife Refuges. In this case I have worked to establish the Lost Mound Unit of the Savanna District of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. This area was once the Savanna Army Depot. The Depot was announced for closure in the 1995 BRAC and has not been hunted since then. We are located in Northwest Illinois in Jo-Daviss County. Jo-Daviss County has consistently produced some of the largest deer in the state. Anyway, There is 4,500 acres of land that has not been hunted since 1995 and this year we will be holding our first ever disabled deer hunt. The State tries to maintain a herd size around 35 deer per-square mile and through my best efforts to gather knowledge on the deer herd our counts indicate 80 deer per square mile. This is the biological reason for a hunt, but this is also make it a very successful hunt. I only have a few volunteers and am in dire need of more volunteer help as well as hunters to apply for the event.
