I got the book "Quitting Smoking For Dummies".
As soon as I get through "Reading For Dummies" I'll see what it says.

Nasty habit , never smoked and never will. I taught the no smoking classes in the Hospitial and the first thing i told my patients or class, is to stop smoking, you first must really want to, if not you will find every excuse to start back or not to stop. You can quit anything if you set your mind and body to it and just work at it. Smoking is a mind game just like over eating, over drinking or any other habit you aquire in life. The only habit, there is no cure for is hunting.

Well Grey
I quit back in 97 and I still miss it. That being said I do feel better now that I've been quit for awhile. I tried cold turkey, nicotene gum, chewed toothpicks, and finally tried hypnosis. When I did the Hypnosis I went to a private hypnotist. I avoided the group therapy since I had talked to someone who said when they tried it as a group they kept getting distracted and it didn't work. I still do chew toothpicks but having someone smoke next to me doesn't bother me. The only place that the smoke smell bothers me is when I get a hotel room that is smoking. I don't know why but I can't stand to be in a hotel room that is a smoking room. I can be in clubs or next to someone that is smoking but not the room.
I do miss it but like I said seeing what the benefits are since I've quit make up for the occasional craving.
Take care Be safe Poacher.

Smoked for 28 years and stopped smoking almost 2 years ago now
First thing is you really need to want to quit.
I went to quitnow.com and they have this article you read one section per day while your still smoking for 10 days, tells you all about the myths and hoopla about smoking. Not that I think that is why I quit but it help me finalize some thoughts about how I really wanted to quit.
All in all I hope that you do quit we all need to be healthier as we get older.

I quit smoking about nine years ago, I used the nicotine gum for the first three days. After that it was cold turkey. I did cheat quite a bit that first year, but every time I smoked one it tasted so bad I wanted nothing to do with starting again. Quitting smoking does take practice, I think the key is to not get down on yourself if you start again or cheat. Eventually, when the time is right, it will stick. Good luck!

I quit Copenhagen 2 years ago after 24 years of chewing it.
Went out and bought a can of real mint , and never went back to either after a couple of weeks on the mint.
the mint battled the urge to have something in my lip, and then it was easy after that.

| I have smoked for 39 years and Ive had 15 heart attacks, a 5 way bypass and still suffer from chest pains. Ive been trying to quit now for 4 years but I just cant find the magic bullet yet. Its just so damn hard and I enjoy smoking even though I know its killing me. Ive been through 3 stop smoking courses, Ive tried the pill, the patch, the gum, cold turkey, the inhaler and God knows I have no will power. I know I have to quit but I like to smoke so that makes it even tougher. Scare tactics dont work either as I have been told by my Cardioligist that if I get to where I need another bypass operation there probably wont be a surgeon that will do it because I smoke but that doesnt stop me even though it scares me terribly. I just havent been able to do it. My last heart attack was in 2002 and laying there on the angiogram table with a cable up in my artery to check out my heart they told mr there was nothing they could do so I have taken it from that point that there isnt going to be anything done for me so why bother. I have since had 2 episodes of major chest pains and didnt bother going to the hospital because I feel that it wont do me any good so I was ready to die at home but thank God I havent yet im still here. Ive got it bad and dont know what else to do. I just continue on. Jimmy

Two packs of Marlboro a day. It sucks. Just last week I tried to quit.....was out of smokes for less than an hour......ran down to the store and bought a carton.
In my 20's I quit cold turkey, for about 8 years or more. Then for some reason I started back on them. Now it's real hard to get the willpower to try and stop.

Gents since this topic is gearing up again I thought I'd move it back to the forum proper.
TwoBeards, Gunrunner, and Greysmoke. Guys I hope you can get the habit kicked.
As stupid as it sounds maybe try some positive reenforcement. like when you go 1hr without a smoke you go reload a couple of your favorite rounds or shoot a couple. Maybe try putting yourself in a situation where you cant smoke. Hell carry a pound of powder around with ya. I don't know. I'll keep thinking on it and maybe come up with some ideas. Till then keep the Faith guys
Take care Be safe Poacher.

| I was one of three boys. None of us smoke, although my younger brother eats worm dirt. Statisticly, we should all be smokers...both my folks were heavy smokers. It wasn't the anti-smoking propaganda I was exposed to in school (I was in fourth grade the year the warnings went on the packs). I would listen to my folks wake up in the morning, and hear them spend about ten minutes hacking up crap. That was enough for me to decide I was NEVER going to smoke!

Thanks Poacher I really do appreciate it, I love to reload and when Im reloading I dont even want a smoke I can go 4 or 5 hours with out but eventually it hits me and I have to go have one. I have cut back from 2 1/2 packs aday to just under one pack a day. Im gettin there its just gonna take some time. I like the Idea about carrying around a pound of powder with you , that would definately keep me from lighting one up. Again thanks Poacher Jimmy

Poacher, the things I do to get away from smoking are exercise related....get on the bike, jog on the beach, do a hard hike through some hills. Just an hour, more or less, but getting out and breathing hard is my favorite respite from smoking. No cigarettes allowed during those times.
I better start riding the bike 24/7.......

| I have considered quitting many times, but my job darn near encourages it. Maybe when the prisons go non smoking, I'll do it, but until that time, I am just under a pack a day.
