I've been drinking a lot of this stuff lately. They say it helps to keep your electrolytes balanced. The thing that concerns me is the amount of Sodium, (55 mg. per 8 ounces). I haven't compared it to "Gatorade", but I'm sure it's about the same. I'm trying to clean up my act a little bit, and knock off the beer and other crap. I remember when they used to have salt tablets by the water fountain in some shops years back. Now they tell you to watch your Sodium intake. When you try and get serious about what you comsume now a days, all you get is confused.  Bill T.

When I lived in So Cal and did a lot of outdoor work in the heat I'd go through gallons of Gatorade.  Bought the cans of powder and mixed my own....I like to make it stronger than the store bought pre-mixed bottles.   Gatorade let me work all day and not get dehydrated.

Never tried Powerade.

Too much sodium can be an issue, but not enough potasium can be worse, or so I have read.

Gatorade label I just looked at shows 110 mg/20 ounces, and 5% RDA. Call it 5 mg/ounce. RDA is around 2200 mg or so.

I try to limit myself to no more than one quart of gatorade or the like per day when working outside. The rest is water and diet Dr Pepper!

Used to drink about 1/2 gallon of ice tea per day.  Tannic acid seems to play a role in kidneystone formation, and I had mine about 14 years ago. Hurtingest SOB I ever had, worse than the pinched nerve/sciatic pain that laid me up for two months about 25 years ago. When the MD told me to stop drinking so damned much tea, I listened to him! Have had no prblems since.

Theres no MD, PHD or anything like that associated with my name so take it for what its worth, but my take on things is that what the med comunity tells folks about sodium and so on is all directed at the 'main stream' person.  The average person now days lives in a house with A/C then drives a car to work where they go either set in an office that has AC or work in a warehouse/factory that is most likely in the A/C or at least in the shade with fans.  Then they go home or maybe to the gym for an hour first and then home and may do a bit of yard work in the evening for an hour or so and sit in the A/C.

If that describes you then you most likely dont need much of the sport drinks, one a week would be more than enouph for all the benifits it would offer and more would up sodium levels.

On the other hand theres folks like me and Im sure some of the other folks around here.  I sweat by the bucket even in mild heat and moderate work, add to that that I work as a tree trimmer doing heavy strenuous work often in temps over 100 degrees and there is no way for my body to absorb straight water fast enouph to stay hydrated and even if I do my electrolites are to low.  The electrolites are both sodium and potasium along with other stuff and you loose loads of sodium as well as other stuff in your sweat.

So if you fit the first catagory and figure you are sweating heavily if the pits of your shirt get a bit moist then you probably get more sodium in your normal diet than you need and so a lot of sport drinks will do more harm than good.  If you happen to be in the second group though where a normal day in warm weather is wringing out a totaly soaked shirt every half hour or so and maybe a bath towl for a sweat rag that also has to be wrung out every hour or so and you look like you just jumped in a lake from all the sweat and once they dry they have white lines all over your cloths from the salts in the sweat, well then I figure you realy dont have to worry near so much about the sodium intake since it is going out in the sweat.  The sport drinks are basicly to help the body absorb fluids quicker and replace what you loose in sweat, if you dont sweat a lot then they will do more harm than good if drank heavily but if you do sweat by the gallon then the can save you from dehydration and a lot of problems that can go along with it.

Just my own thoughts on the subject.

Bill T.......I would limit my intake of those products you mentioned in your post! I would also change to "green tea" and plan Water, there just isn't anything better for your body and I mean like 8 glasses a day.

I drink NO SODA of any kind......the diet soda is the worst of all products, Opray had a special show on the effects of diet soda and Jack LaLane has been telling people about soda for 50 years.
