Thought I’d share a recent experience with you regarding asthma as it seems I’ve had it for years now and never realized what it was. What’s really odd is I have a strong emergency medicine background having been a certified EMT in years past. I had noticed an increase in my nasal allergy problems as well as increasingly frequent sinus infections and simply thought it was part of getting older, which wasn’t exactly right. After my most recent bought of recurrent sinus infections I explained my health concerns to my doctor, telling him what I was trying to do to lose weight and become fit again. After asking him what else I could do and discussing breathing problems while under exertion he had some tests done on me at the hospital, followed by trips to an ENT, a sleep study and finally an allergist. Hello, it all equated to a change in my allergies which had also lead to asthma. While all of this seems to be treatable for me and my allergists believes I will regain all of my lung capacity again this has been a sobering experience, because you see, I’ve never been a smoker, but my parents were which is part of the reason for the asthma I now have. If you are having nasal allergy problems and recurrent sinus infections as well as sleep disorders than see your doctor, these are indicators of asthma and any of them are unhealthy, furthermore they can kill you.

My youngest son and my daughter both have it.It is no joke as you said bud.Asthma as I hear is becoming more common in the US.Good post.glad to see ya bud.

Evening Fellas >> Been dealing with diagnosed asthma for seven years or so now. Before, in my younger years, doctors said it was simple allergies ... dust, pollens, flour ... stuff like that would trigger conjestion, labored breathing, watery eyes, swelling of the throat. Started working in the grain business in late 1996. Not the best combination with my condition. Suffered to no end. Most of my work in the beginning entailed being on rail cars outside in the fresh air so that was ok but when I had to go into the lab, those nights darn near killed me. Was woken up on many an occasion at night not being able to breath. Scary. Came to a head in 1998. Personally, I think the episode I had woulda killed me if I hadn't been in town and close to docs. Took two weeks to get back on my feet and months after that for the lungs to feel right again. Was then diagnosed with what docs called exertion induced asthma. That's when I got me perscription of albuterol and it's been a god-send. Still had troubles at nights sometimes but nothing that the inhaler wouldn't quickly clear up. Then two years ago a doc made the most obvious of suggestions. I'd progressed through the chain of command at work to the point where I was inside amongst the dust on a constant bases. Doc said, wear a light duty dust mask. Such an obvious thing. From the moment I started wearing them on, the need for albuterol plummeted. Stopped playing basketball three years back as well. That sucked but lessened stress on the lungs, too. Been a year or so since I've used the inhaler but I always have it real close by. Just never know when something is going to trigger a bad reaction. I played around with asthma far to long. Probably lucky something real bad never happened. Either way, if ya have breathing issues and suspect, by all means get things checked out. As the guys have said, it isn't anything to take lightly. >> korey

Creek, You are scaring me. For about the last year or more I have had sinus infections, sometimes itchy eyes, always dry burning eyes but the worst thing that started a little later is sleep apnea. It scares the crap out of me ! It will always happen if I fall asleep on my back. I can't breath out of my nose. Sometimes I force myself to wake up because I can't breath and sometimes I finally do and I jerk up trying to catch my breath. Then I'm afraid to go back to sleep for fear of it happing again. I wake up in the morning and my nose is all plugged up then walk around and sneeze a couple times and it's like a water fall coming out of my nose. I have never had allergies before. My brother has had Asthma for most of his lfe. I don't know if it is related but sometimes if I'm setting down watching tv or something, I find myself not breathing and take a deep breath, I catch it mentally knowing that I'm not breathing normally. Frickin weird. Same thing, been happening about a year now. I'm not one who likes to go to the doctor. Too many bad experiences. I find I'm better diagnosing my own body. You have me really thinking now. You may have explained some of my questions. Thanks.

Sound's like your going down the same pathway. When you see your doctor and go to an ENT you'll find out that the chronic nasal allergies have created some problems inside your sinus. If you are sent for a sleep study (these are becoming increasingly important) and then go to an allergist you'll start to understand how and why your airway can become occluded or partially blocked. There are some good medications out now to get things back under control as well as keeping them under control. Your right, the only thing wrong with getting older is things like this otherwise its great.

asthma is a reactive progressive condition, the sooner you take your meds the better the out come! however if your meds don't work as they should don't hesitate to dial 911! typical for an asthmatic would be try your inhaler 3 times then an updraft after that, with no relief call 911, the ambulance should have even stronger meds to open up your lungs!

Lot's of people have asthma and live fully productive and healthy lives they just have to work with their doctor(s) to find the best course of treatment and medications for their own specific needs. I'm not happy about having it but I'm not going to let it turn me into a shut in or stop doing the things I like to do. What I am doing is listening to my doctor and following instructions. I'm also using a dust mask outside when I'm cutting the grass or in the basement when I vacuum it or I work around my gun solvents and reloading components. Becoming informed and taking effective control of my medical condition is my own approach to whats going on with me. I've always preached to new rookies that a positive mental outlook was one of the best tools for continued survival that they could add to their tactical toolbox, I just had to remember to apply it to myself on this health concern.

You might also consider eliminating as many dust catchers as you can, like carpeting. Invest in a vacum with a good HEPA filter system, too.

Charley, I've been thinking of putting tile in my whole house and getting rid of the carpet. I just finished a major bathroom remodel.  From replacing studs in the wall, drywall, jacking out the foundation to replace the shower drain pipe that connects to the main drain that broke off. Fun. All started with replacing a bathtub ! Never drained right and after pulling the tub I found out why...Then new tub, shower door. New door into the bathroom, new molding around floor and door.Oh ! Tiled the shower/bath with 18 in. tiles up to the ceiling. Then it went to tiling the bathroom floor . Then the entry way. Then the kitchen. It never ends ! The carpet is only 4 yrs. old but I was calculating how much it would be to tile the rest of the house...I'm burned out now.  I don't know why I told you all of that.

That little plumbing problem around here would lead to an explosive growth of Stachybotrys mold, which many people cannot tolerate, and has been known to trigger asthma attacks.
Hope you used a good backer, James Hardie's Hardibacker is one of the best and most popular around these parts. Production builders here simply lay tile over greenrock, if you are lucky, or plain gypsumboard if you are not!
I don't have a stitch of carpet in my house. Replaced it with tile, laminate flooring, and redid my stairs in oak, replacing the OSB with carpet over it. It is anecdotal, of course, no double blind study, but we have had far fewer respiratory problems since the carpet got shitcanned. I wouldn't live in house now that had carpet.

TG..It is not uncommon for children with asthma to outgrow it as they get older, lots of studies have been done on that angle. I just didn't know about the chronic nasal allergy problem going into an asthma condition with adults.
Charley and Wyo...Yep your both on the money about how cleaning out carpet and mold and mildew breeding grounds will improve living conditions in your domicile, just wish more people would do it in work environments. One big thing I learned is that indoor plants can harbour mold and mildew in their potting soil.
We've done the same if not more level of demolition renovation in the house we live in now. Bought it and 15 acres 5 years ago, house wasn't old, just trashed out. Redid plumbing and bathrooms, replaced all sinks and eliminated wet conditions in the basement. Than replaced Central Heat and Air unit (it died) with a propane furnace and exterior air unit, used this opportunity to repair and upgrade ducting. Also throughly cleaned out all accessible portions of the ducts. Made a big difference.

Charley, I had mold on the studs when I tore out the old tile/cement rock. I sprayed it with bleach twice , torei it all out. Replaced everything. Tar papered. Put up new cement/sheet rock then tiled. Creek, I don't have air cond. I did replace and old wall heater that I never used because it and the one in the living room wouldn't vent because of the old asbestos vent pipes. They had to heat up before they did. How in the hell did the people who lived here before me use them ? They told me the one in the hall didn't work. Used the one in the living room the first year and the second year it did the same as the one in the hall, wouldn't vent.The hall one is by the bedrooms so I replaced it first. Use the fireplace to heat up the living room. I know, ash dust right ? I finally replaced the one in the hall that is straight across from the bathroom door. Cost me about $1500,00 when all said and done. Repalced the vent pipe with a sheetmatal one too. Still have to do the one in the living room. I wished I had been a little smarter when I moved in this house about 4 1/2 yrs. ago. I replaced the carpet and put new lanolium in the kitchen,bathroom and entry way. Now replacing all lanolium with tile and thinking of geting rid of carpet. Could have spent the $5000.00 on tiling the hole damn house back then !

Hey you guys with asthma..when I used to make the long trip back tp Pa, I'd stay up late talking to my Dad, spending time with him. I hated the summers there cause of the heat and high humidity. One night late, I never sleep much, Dad came upstairs to use the bathroom and walked by my room..I was sitting up trying to breathe, kinda scared.. I was taking the deepest breaths i could and holding them as long as i could then another real deep breath. I just couldn't get any oxygen. hard as I tried i couldn't breathe..
Dad stopped in the doorway, looked at me for a minute and said, "You ok boy"? I said, "Dad I can't breathe."
He said, "Blame that on your Mom son, she had asthma real bad."
And she did, if she was sleeping you could hear her snoring clear upstairs, she slept downstairs, she was pretty sick back then. But she would sit and gasp for breath a lot with the slightest exertion..
But I was still lifting, running 3-5 miles every other day and still practicing my martial arts. So i couldn't understand why this was happening, and only back there and not out here in Montana...
Every once in a great while i will get that here, but for not as long and not as severe....

Doesn't sound like apnea. It makes me wake up because I can't breath and then afraid to go back to sleep because it might happen again. I don't get much good sleep either unless I take a sleeping aid but then it's harder to wake myself up. What a dilemma ...

after reading all you guys complaints and responses ..... It all started sounding familiar. I have allergies for a few years now but since last sage grouse season things have intensified 10 fold Told my wife to make me an appointment to see the doc last week. (she works for my doc). well i went up to feed cattle on easter sunday (even cows need easter breakfast) got a face full hay and dust as i put the last hay bale on the truck and it hit me hard. I was coughing so hard the gag reflex kicked in felt like i didnt even have lungs. after a couple of min. my buddy says get in the truck we are going to town. I waved him off I couldent even talk. then he remembered he had some benadryl in the truck (outdated by 3 yrs). I took 2 and in about 10 min i could breath normal again. He said after i could breath again your not feeding you are drivin so i drove the rest of the feed but we had a calf and cow down. so we had to drive out into the sage brush to load up the calf to get it to the house and try to save it. (new born about 120 lbs way too big) well loading the calf in the brush it hit me again . the wheezing the coughing i could not breath. so any way i went to the doc today .... results are severe alergies and asthma. Hmmmm who woulda thunk it. got a shot of steroids (Ill be looking like the hulk in no time) and he put me on a puffer Ventolin HFA. Hope it works ill find out next weekend at the branding i guess. Good post made me wake up to the symptoms but didnt get to the doc in time for the major attack. But as i was on my knees gasping i was thinking about this thread. And thank GOD my buddy had some old benadryl in his glove compartment.

Oh by the way if any one cares the calf died and the cow had to be put down. and now my buddy (had a heartattack 3 yrs ago) is trying to pamper me with the "easy stuff". after his heart attack i have gutted and drug out every deer he has killed by myself but i did make him help get it into the pickup. (his wife loves me for that{and she is avatar material}). At 38 I dont feel like i need pity from a 59 yr old. Am I getting OLD!!??!! dayum.
