Fellas I been sicker than a cold has ever made me for about three days.
I hunted Wednesday evenin from a bow stand and was feelin poorly.Next day I was hackin and gaggin, felt feverish and have been since.I tried that Theraflu stuff,Nyquil,Tylenol cold.Aint nothin seems to work worth a crap.Got a cough so bad I aint even trying to bowhunt. The wind has been up real hard here lately and thats the only saving grace to let me rifle hunt blowing hard enough to cover my racket.
I felt so bad I told my hard charging young helper to go on and hunt without me Thursday and Friday evenin after work which is odd for me.Most folks that know me know I`ll hunt in ten degrees and a sleet storm cold enough to freeze a w****`s heart(Thats derned cold in Texican by the way:lol:)sitting all day in a stand with icicles in my whiskers for the chance to catch a good buck passin through or running does.
anyways, any of yall fellas got a  remedy that really works???
I tried some Crown Royal and Coca Cola last night after I gutted and hung my deer in the walk in cooler.Eased the cough for sure:lol:but give me a worse headache than I had today.:sofa:
but its back today, coughin and gaggin up a storm.
lets hear your best cold cures..

Similar to my "new family" recipe (my old family didn't keep alcohol in the house).

Same ingredients as Varmintcaller, just different regimen:

Combine tea, lemon juice and honey in a pitcher and chill in refrigerator for 24-48 hours, or until you feel better. Then, pour into a tall class with ice cubes and drink.

Meanwhile, down 2 jiggers of whiskey every 30 minutes until bedtime. Repeat as needed until symptoms subside (or you forget about them).

From your description, sounds more like influenza than a cold. The liquor won't help, but will make it more bearable.

Alcohol suppresses immune function and only makes matters worse. You might not feel anything while being sick, but you are actually prolonging your cold by drinking alcohol. Honey and tea...nice, comforting but do nothing for sickness.

1. N-Acetylcystine: Found in any health food store. Restores glutathione concentrations in the liver which play an important role in destroying free radicals that destroy immune function and inhibits growth of bacteria and replication of viruses.

2. Elderberry (concentrated): Boosts immune function by increasing the production of cytokines, a protein that regulates immune response to invading bacteria & viruses.

3. Zinc: Supports a healthy immune system.

Start taking the minute you feel like you might be coming down with something (take twice daily). You will not feel more than a slight cold, if that. And, recover in 2 days or less. I might even suggest starting the day before you are going to hunt and take it through your season. You will not miss a day due to a cold.

This research is only published in medical journals and not in the popular magazines that are in business to sell magazines or products. These natural supplements are, just that...natural, therefore cannot be patented and make a company millions of dollars. So, no one advertises it.

Anyway, stay healthy and happy hunting.

Bea175,

One of my kids eats the hot peppers that I raise like candy, he swears that this peppers will prevent the swine flu.

When he was in the Marines, I sent him a dime bag of my peppers, about half his platoon ended up in sick call. It was requested that I never send those peppers to any Marine again. Something about those peppers being rated as "nuclear waste".

I don't know if all of what Bleeper said is accurate but I swear by the Zinc. Get some in the Vitamin aisle at "Wally-World." It's cheap and if you let it dissolve under your tounge for as long as you can (Stuff tastes like a mouth full of roofing nails) it will indeed bind with the viruses that cause most URI's and keep them from reproducing. Then once the cold is passed take one tablet twice a day and no more colds.

IF you have a lot of congestion then take that generic GUAIFENESIN. (also cheap and it works very well)

Save the Crown Royal for when you're BETTER.

I always figured Jack Daniels and a good long sleep afterwards is best for a cold.

My old doctor used to give me a B-12/B-complex injection followed by an injection of Decadurabolin. This cured any flu/cold in hours. The new docs don't seem to be down with this steroid and vitamin combination.  Maybe one of your country MDs would see things differently.

I had a bad case of the cold i tried to shake for 2 weeks and then some i was determined to let it run it's course.

I remembered reading in a big book from my wifes grandmothers house that printing was somewhere around 1858 or something...said a lot about a lot..but the one that stuck was ONIONS...highly medicinal..but the problem with them is that if eating 10 would cure you ,most people would not eat even 1

So i went to the farmers market and got a few huge sweet onions..cut one up and it filled a cereal bowl heaping..
I added some itallian dressing and a fork..went down really good till the last 1/2 cup..that took a little longer to tollerate..
It worked.. the second day i felt good as new ..
No wife kissin for 4 days though...

Something else in the book i found amusing was a bit on cigarette smoking..said it makes you stupid and at the rate people are smoking that in 100 years the world will be filled with imbosols.
i have this book somewhere

To my list above add vitamin d (1,000 units, IU) taken daily. This helps with immune function quite a bit too. These should really be taken daily as a part of your normal nutritional diet. It will prevent colds from taking hold and turning bad. Otherwise, if just used occasionally or once you get sick, it won't be as effective...although more effective than most "old wives tales" or "myth remedies".

Recently there have been several warnings about all the products containing zinc for cold remedies. I'd stay away from them

I have COPD,Chronic Brochitus. Anything ttat resembles a cold or such gets to be  a bronchial infection for me. I have found that UMCKA which can be bought Vitamin Cottage or similar seems to reall help in cold duration and symptoms. It's fairly expensive, but works.

AN old remedy we used at home was onions and honey for cough.

Jalapenos and cayenne pepper. Anything so hot it makes you sweat and drink. Drink lots of fluids with them.
Repeat until you feel better.
Then yogurt once you start to feel better.

I have three kids who seem to bring every bug of every season home. So I have had to find things to break this vicious sickness cycle that seemed to be impeccably timed exactly with my hunts. The following is what works great for me, and my hunting partners.

Take WellnessFizz as soon as you feel the symptoms show.
Also, you can take echinacea, ester-C, and elderberry at first signs of symptoms. If you do not catch early, should reduce the severity and longevity of the sickness.

If sinuses become a prob use a nettie pot with homemade saline to flush them out (I just use a regular "snot sucker" bulb left over from the kids, fill a small glass with saline, suck into bulb, blow thru nostrils). Also, use NutriBiotic Nasal Spray Plus if you feel a sinus infection coming on. And Sinusin Homeopathic spray for maintenance once sinus infection is gone.

I have found that taking about 10,000 (5 gel caps of 2000iu) iu of D3 (cheap at Costco) during the fall/winter months staves off most colds and flues for me. D3 is the "sunshine" vitamin, which has natural antibiotic properties. Cold and flue seasons are in fall/winter, shorter colder days, hence less sun exposure. Also, a good daily probiotic goes a long way in keeping you healthy, especially if you have taken antibiotics, IMHO.

All the above are natural/homeopathic. I have since stopped taking pseudoephedrin every day, that seemed to make going to sleep difficult, and once I did, I had to get up 5 times a night to pee!
