I've read that laminate is stronger than wood in thin areas of the stock/forearm?

This statement is true.  Laminates will always be stronger then wood, due to the construction process of glue, wood, glue, wood, glue, wood...etc.

That said, I have broken a handgun(cannon) stock that was laminated.  Caliber was the 30-378WeatherbyMag-but the cartridge may have been too much for the gun?  Handgun: Competitor rotary-action with 16" brake barrel....what a hoot!

Gotta agree that the laminate is the stronger of the two.  Just wish you could checker it!

For a bit of trivia . . .

Did you know that pound for pound, wood is stronger than steel?

I have just restocked my Ruger MKII Stainless in a laminated stock and it came checkered.

I think you will find laminated softer, than say walnut. Less prone to warping? Yes Harder? No.   Take your thumb nail and make a mark in laminate, now try walnut.     ed

Laminate is more stable and is stronger because of the grain running different and the gluing process. The wood it self is probably softer, unless it is a walnut laminate but most are made from birch strips glued together under tons of pressure. Laminate are harder to work with because they chip real easy when in-letting your action. Personally i believe Laminate has it all over regular wood stocks. They make a much better handle for your rifle .

I believe some years back we were suckered, into believing, that synthetics was better, laminate was better than sliced bread, and stainless was far superior to chrome moly, and fluting, it is impossible to remove metal and make things stronger. Stainless is softer, whick makes it easier to work with,  and no blueing process after its done, laminates is a bunch of left overs that they had to find a use for, and fluting, the lightweight era started that. Gun prices went up, all of the above created ways to make guns cheaper, and retail higher.  Better ? In not convinced. Im still a walnut and blue guy.     ed
