I bought a cheap "night owl" monocular for around $250.00 from Walmart some years ago. Has 5x maginifcation which I recommend...the higher the better.

I use mine at 100 yards night hunting coyote/fox over bait. All I want to know is something there. That's when I get into position with the Schmidt and Bender 8x56 heavy crosshair. It has no electronics I'm simply shooting the silohuette once I identify it is not a wolf.

The night owl though crude has worked very well for what I want from it. The S&B does the real work but sometimes I simply can't make a humane shot or identify what is out there so I pass. Wolf and Canadian Lynx are in the area. 

I've kind of looked at the night vision scopes but they are spendy and I'm satisfied with the S&B for night work. I actually prefer a cloudy night without a moon and usually am hunting over snow too but not always.
