Even though I've logged in and out a few times and read my latest private message each time I still get a flag telling me I have "1 new message"?

Not really all that "savvy" on these kinds of things.  Is it still happening?  Try logging out and resetting the cookies(on the login block)?

Ya I've logged in and out a number of times over the last week and it doesn't recognize the fact that I've read the private messages (more than once now).

It probably has something to do with your browser cookies.  Try deleting them, then close and restart your browser.
