I've seen some recommend wearing a ball cap with the bill pulled down. Seems it acts somewhat as a large aperature, and lets you see the front sight better.

Or do what i did and have a lense implant (for a cataract, not for shooting!). My dominant eye is now 20/25, and I can see better than I could when I was 25.

I had my lenses changed to trifocals so I can see the sights on my handguns before that everything was a blur!

For bullseye I use an adjustable aperture device that attaches to a pair of shooting glasses over the dominant eye. The smaller the aperture the greater the depth of field. It goes a long way to put both sights in focus for tired, old eyes.

Here's Brownell's version...

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/Store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=8767

Mine is a much larger disk with more apertures to select from. It clips to the top of your glasses. I couldn't find that exact device, but here's another similar one from Brownell's...

I just started scoping most of my rifles and some of my Contenders over the last couple of years. Plus all on rifles have carry type of slings.

My vision is just not as good as used to be and cradling my rifle while walking thru the fields is getting a  little too heavy these days for long walks. Now when I hunt, I take a lawn chair with me and sit and wait for the prey to come to me.

HI JERRY: I RECENTLY BOUGHT AN AR-223 VARMINTER RIFLE WITH A BULL BARELL,SCOPE,BIPOD. NOT ALTOGETHER YET. MY YOUNGEST SON IS INTO THIS I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE FUN. I DON'T INTEND TO CARRY IT VERY FAR. I'LL BE HAPPY TO BE A SITTER WHILE HE DOES THE CALLLING. I FIGURE I MIGHT DO BETTER WITH A SCOPE EVEN IF I CAN'T SHOOT GROUPS THAT CAN BE COVERED WITH A DIME AT 100 YARDS LIKE HE CAN. I'M HOPING FOR THE BEST-IT WILL STILL BE FUN. TAKE CARE

Shadow,

A while back when my kids were unattached, we would go out and hunt together. They would have a nice walk in the woods and I would be in my chair waiting for the game they stirred up to approach me.

On my property in West Virgina, I have logs cut into places to sit with distances walked off. Makes my live much easier that way, since the boys have  grown up and gotten married. They have to ask permission to go hunting, I don't.

Hi Jerry: I have to pace myself also. Had a quadruple heart bypass at 50 years old, I'm 66 now and damn happy to be verticle. It's funny that my son dragged out a big steel box out that was burried in the garage. I was on an Army reserve pistol team 1962-64. Had about 10,000 45cal. match grade brass. My son was blown away by the age on the brass. I replied that's about 30 years ago, he snapped back how about 43.I said I was pretty close. Had my press, can of powder, dies and the rest. I am having fun even though i can't touch him. Looking forward to shooting this 223 varmint gun.                            Take care and press on.

Shadow,

My oldest is a Police officer, that is SWAT qualifed with many weapons and weapons system. I used to be able to out shoot him, that was a while ago.

My middle son is a big game hunter and does combat pistol matches. I could out shoot and out hunt any day. Those days are past. Now I let him walk thru the woods and chase the deer to where I am sitting in my lawn chair.

The youngest has little interest, but does know how to shoot.

But once in a while I get to take my oldest grandson out and let him shoot some of my lighter stuff. He is becoming  agood shot.

The there are a few moments in my life, where I di the really great shot when I am Deer hunting or Elk hunting. Then I call my oldest grandson and ask him if he wants a steak. :)

That is what grandpa is for. That comes with age.

Jerry

jjb2,

I saw a sports doc about my vision and glasses. He examed my eyes and looked at my scopes, plus I had brought in one of my 1911s and one of my unscoped contenders. He asked me to show him at what distances I held these for shooting. Now I have glasses that are trifocal for my right eye. He said not to wear my glasses with my scope. On both counts he made my shooting better.

You might try to go to Walmart or? and pick up a pair of full sized 1:50-reading glasses.  It is just enough magnification to let you clear up the front sight, but not enough to obliterate the targets.

1:25's  might even do you.

That is what I do now days. Good for plinking and range fun, not the best fo rhunting though.

I once did the guns-to-the-doc trick. I was shooting a lot of PPC. He, too, prescribed tri-focals. Bust. They never worked for me. Too many "layers" of optics to fiddle with within a time limit. I wore 'em a few times and then gave up on 'em.

go to wal-mart or the drug store and try reading glasses in various strengths until you get a good focus on a pencil held at arms length. your target will be fuzzy, buts thats as it should be. try to hold pencil at the same length as your front sight will be. a $10 or $12 cure.

I some of the Wally World reading glasses and a couple pair from the Dollar General. The Wally World ones are a little bit better. But the Wally World ones come in a package of three, so they are really about the same as the Dollar General ones in price.

I scope all that I can, but handguns and some rifles, I chose Open sights. Have found that a Touch Up Kit for and automobile in white, helps me a lot on some of the guns that have black sights.
