what is the reason for different dia. bullets for the same caliber such as 45/70 .458 versus .459 bullets?

Generally most cast versus jacketed guns have a cast bullet one thou larger in diameter, to improve seal as jacketed is fine AT barrel diameter, softer lead needs a bit of "squeese".

I know nothing personally about 45-70 but I would not be surprised to find a slight variance in barrel diameter, and you find the bullet(s) that shoot best in your rifle. If yours is "tight", .458 might work well, if it's "loose", gas cutting and "blow-by" will hurt accuracy, so go a more barrel-filling bullet diameter, .459.

If possible, slug your barrel to get an exact size and buy .001" larger cast bullets.

Rifles have been made in .45/70 since 1873. Early manufacturing processes often had only a casula knowledge of QC. Not unusual on Trapdoor Springfields for bores to run .459, .460 or so. Modern rifles are closer to the magic .457, but still vary somewhat.  Cast bullets, which are popular in the .45/70 usually need to be slightly over bore diameter for best results.  The .458/.459 difference depends on the rifle, and you get there by trial and error, mostly.

Welcome to the forum,

In my Marlin 1895 in 45-70, I generally use a cast bullet that is .460, this engages the bullet well with the microgroove rifling.

Again welcome,

Jerry

Welcome to the forum.  Enjoy.  I don't do 45-70 or cast bullets, so can't help on that one.

Sunday I loaded the first batch of .45/70 I've loaded in about 5 years! I've got one of H&R's replica M1873 carbines. Have to load smokeless, they sure don't do well with BP.

Welcome jfinck, for the most part what Charley said. You will find the same in 45 colt with a listing of .452 to .456 and the avg of .454 is what most use in cast. I use .452 in jacketed with good success.

Have fun with working up your load for 45/70 and let us know how it goes because I intend to get one this winter.

Rod
