Hi all,

Nice site here,  a wealth of information for the reloader.

I stumbled upon this site (tip from another reloader) while searching for reloading tips over on gunbroker's reloading forum.

I currently reload 38/357, 45 ACP and 500 magnum but am about ready to pull the handle of my single stage Pacific press on some 270's in the near future. The press dates back to my father's reloading heydays of the 70's-80's. A couple years ago he made me an offer on his old reloading equipment that I couldn't refuse. Recently he surprised me with a gift of his Winchester Model 70 in 270 caliber. I haven't shot this rifle since I was a teenager back in the 70's.  Needless to say I'm a happy camper.

I looked over several ballistic charts and have chosen the 140gn Hornady boat tail as the bullet of choice due mainly to its flat trajectory out past 500 yards. I'm looking for mass and long range, the 140 appears to be a nice comprimise.

Question, what powder to use? I have IMR4064 and 4895, but would prefer a powder that comes close to filling the case for accuracy/consistency reasons.

Anyone have a powder suggestion?

Regards, John
:troll:

Weezer

Thanks, I spent some time reading up on H4831, it doesn't appear suitable for 223 or 308, I'll make use of the 4064 and 4895 in those calibers once my surplus ammo is used up and will give the nosler/4831 a try in my 270.

Thanks for the tip.

John

I'd second Wheezers recommendation of 4831. Although max loads for my 130 grainers result in compressed loads with 4831. Depending on how deep you seat bullets you could have the same problem. Not necessarily a bad thing as some guns realy shoot wih compressed loads. You might also try 4350.  RD

i have been using up some older powder for target shooting but i have also used H4831SC which is an extreme powder which has shorter kernels and is not as temp sensetive.i use 58 gr for about 3000 fps with the 140 gr accubond.

I picked up some H4831sc and a box of Nosler Accubond 140 grain Spitzers at our local Cabela's tonight.

Hoping to find time to work up a dozen for a range test this weekend.

Do you have a suggested powder weight to get my feet wet?

Thanks, John

Wheezer suggested about 58 Grains behind 140 Accubonds in his post. I've used 60 grains behind 130s in my 270 so he's probably at about max too. I'd start with about 53 grains and work my way up a grain or even 1/2 grain at a time watching very carefully for pressure signs over 55 or 56 grains. Once you see signs back off a grain and call her good.  RD

it is a load that has been pressure tested with another brand of bullet.   i havent  shot across the chrony with it yet.   the 270 was purchased 5 months before they stopped making them.55 gr should be a very safe starting point.

Hod 4831 is a good powder for the 270 but i have found Rel 22 outperforms 4831 with better Accuracy and Vel in both my 270 with 130 and 150 gr bullets. I use the 270 Nosler 140 Accubond but in my 270 WSM.

+ 1 on Rockydog's suggestion to try IMR 4350.  I have found that 55.0 grains of 4350 will push a 130 Sierra Game King at about 3100 fps, although that should be worked up to in your rifle as it is a max load.  53.0 grains pushes a 150 Nosler Partition at about 2850 and to the same point of impact as the Sierra 130's at least in my old Ruger 77 and my wife's Winchester Model 70.   Haven't tried a 140 grainer, but you should be able to work something up that will make you grin.

Deprimed and sized about 55 cases last weekend, pulled out the calipers and "DOH!" most are just over the max COL.

Spent a couple evenings reading about trimmers, pulled the trigger on a Forster trimmer from Cabela's last night. Should be dropped at our local store within a few days.

I plan to trim them all to 2.53" before cleaning the primer pockets and then giving them a run through the tumbler.

Champing at the bit, all dressed up and nowhere to go.

Trimmer arrived, the Forster seems to work well now that I'm accustomed to it, I've cut down about half my empty cases. Was hoping to get some loads in before the weekend, running out of time and too many other things need to be completed first.

Had an old timer tell me at the range the other day that his standard .270 load was all the H 4831 he could put in the case topped off by a 130 grain bullet. This is a compressed load. I tried 2 different brands of cases RP and Win. Neither would hold over 61 grains. I've loaded 60 grains for my Savage bolt with no pressure signs. So his load might be OK for MY gun. Don't know about anyone else's. RD

A San Carlos Apache Guide I know hunts with a 270 but only uses 130gr commercial ammo for antelope, coues & mule deer & elk,he hits them in the neck as it saves meat.
