I've been browsing the site for a couple days and think it's great so I thought I'd join and say "Hi."

I'm new to reloading and started for two reasons:
1) The cost of feeding a 44Mag. will bring a guy to tears.
2) I can do a lot better for the Savage 99 (in 300 Savage) than factory ammo and probably for a lot less.

Found the site via "Google" looking for hand loading.

Tim - a.k.a. Sprint

hola tim !

umm about that "lot less..." it's safe to say less especially on the 44 and if u cast ur own bullets make ur own lube and can somehow manufacture free primers definitely a whole lot less!!! it is more economical tho but because i reload i shoot more(dang there went the money i saved ) on the brite side there is a bunch of great guys here so welcome aboard ! the most important thing for a newbie in my opinion is safety and safety always pays ( or at least i still have most my body parts !or none lost because of shooting or reloading at least ) wow 300 savage ...i was tempted to try one of those in a pistol ,my buddy has the 99 like ur's ,happy loading amigo

Many thanks; nope, don't work for Sprint. The Estes Sprint is my all time favorite model rocket. Most kids give up rockets for cars and girls in high school. I was too geeky for that so I stuck with rocket science (in a manner of speaking). Rocketry's just a hobby; I'm a computer man by trade.

Thanks for the tip! I think I can get it down to about half the cost by buying bullets in bulk (if I can find 'em, things seem to be a bit scarce.) Planning to work my way up to casting bullets. I'd like to feed the Old Army home-made bullets eventually too.

Yes, safety, learned that the hard way early on. Fortunately I managed to keep all my bits and pieces largely in tact.

Always loved lever guns. A 99 in 300 Savage seems to me one of the classics. Found one at a gun show recently and fell in love. Couldn't believe how well it shot - first three rounds left holes that practically touch!

supplies are slowly trickling back in primers seem to be the hardest to find bullets next , several things involved in all that ,the war a lil bit and of course the worry about a anti gun governmet, the smart ones stocked up two years ago ,the not so smart ones just grab everything in site hoping to peddle it to desperate folks at grossly inflated prices(we've actually seen $23-$32 bricks of primers being offered for up to $165 ...wow ,not sure of ur locale but often a small out of the way mom and pop gun shop has a lil unmolested stock left we like powder valley, armsandammo, and midway alot there's alot of others on the web as well ( graf's ,jerry's ffl only there tho) i cast for my 44's being as i really dont shoot much with them but targets, i cast for the 30 cal's too but actually shoot more jacket bullets in them ,one thing about casting ( besides the fact that it isnt that hard or mysterious) is one should never run out of boolits ,always a plus factor in my book
the sprint huh ? i used to love the super flea and javelin kits ,of course the flea was only good for about one shot ( yup i put the biggest engine i could on that lil thing lolz )i think i lost 7 of them and they can actually go far beyond the line of site ,the javelin was just so sleek it was sexy ,once i figured out the streamer allowed for great recovery albeit with busted fins i made my own parachutes for them ,fond memories amigo ! my other main hobby now ( besides reloading etc ) is knives, handles, and hafts but that has been a lifetime hobby for me.
if ya have questions etc dont be shy about askin' someone will surely throw in at least two cents worth, i have a few lever guns, used to be into double barrels long ago now i'm more into single shot hand cannons, they're quite addicting really ! have a great nite amigo !

edit for me fat finger's typos( only the non purposeful ones of course)

Thanks for the note.

So far I've been unable to turn up any .451, 230g round nose bullets. I've been able to find everything else (44 & 30 cal. bullets and brass, primers and stuff) with a little bit of looking. I'm still a bit slow turning out cartridges and am still sticking with the minimum loads. I'm fortunate to have a good gun shop or two nearby, and a full Cabela's store within an hour's drive. So I'm pretty well fixed.

I remember the Super Flea and Javelin. Fun little rockets. My buddy Robbie and I used to pool our money and ride our bikes into downtown Colorado Springs and pick up a package of A4-3Ts and a Mosquito at Livine's Hobby Store (the A4s cost about $2 for 4 and the Mosquito cost $0.69). We'd ride home, glue the kit together and then take it up to Bott park and promptly lose it on the first flight. Heh, I think the things would jump into another dimension at ignition, then return when they slowed down. My brother and I would find one when playing frizbee later in the week, and we'd run down the hill with it "Hey Robbie!" and repeat!

Knives and hand cannons! Cool!

Nice to have a goal, but... I think any handloader who is honest with you and themselves will admit they don't save any money handloading. They spend the same amount of money, or more, but they can shoot more.

slow is good especially when learning (that safety pays well thing again )i dont really have any 230's to share but i do have a mold that cast 222's with my alloy ( i believe with #2 or lead is supposed to be 225 or 230) a person can actually cast cheap once set up , for a simple lee setup not counting a melting pot or ladle a sizer die and a mold can be had for less than $40,molds running about $16-20 and the lee sizer is adequete especially if used with the lee liquid alox that comes with it ,
yes sir as i said ur rocket posting brought back memories , and basically the lil super flea did jump into another dimension lolz , i tried painting them as gaudy as i could to no avail (personally i was romantic enough to believe they was intercepted by aliens )btw ? miestro jerry has a friend who commercially sells cast boolits and that perhaps would be a easy way to try a hundred or so ( if she sells that low of quantity) for pistols and plinking they are economical and no harder to load than jacketed ( perhaps a wee bit more bell to make sure one doesnt ruin then starting to seat them ) cast rifle requires a neck expanding die ( like the pistol's)dont worry about the speed ,it'll pick up with experienec and that is best gained slow and safely ! have a great nite !

That was a fun one that I remember fondly too. The only problem was at the time that I simply didn't have the cash to lay out for all the ones I liked (or I'd have probably bought an entire catalog!)

Remember the Orbital Transport? I still have an original from the 70's - at this point in time I'm afraid to fly it. I have a re-release (still unpainted) that flies quite well.

I definitely plan to get into casting; the 44 mag, the Old Army likes .454 conicals and .457 round balls. The flintlock prefers .495 round balls (patched of course.) I've seen kits that get you started with just about everything save the moulds. That's prob'ly how I'll start out.

We tried painting the Mosquitos too, same result! So we just gave up and flew 'em bare.

No doubt true! I figure I can get it down to about half the cost (or twice as many) in .44 mag. Better still if I cast (and assuming that my time is worth 0.) The Savage is a little different: you can get some bullets that run as much as $0.50 each. Some of those really high tech rounds are even more - I think the solid copper are running over 60 cents. With primers, powder and assuming five reloads on brass that's in the $0.75/round range. But for the most part, a quarter per bullet for Speer or Harnady spire points is more in line; about 35-40 cents/round. Not bad, and custom to my rifle, so as long as I can find a combination that I like I'll be good. Lots more choices, too.
