I'm not a handloader. But, I hope to be reloading by the end of the year. I own a Remington Mountain DM chambered for the 260 REM. And, some .38/357 revolvers, a .380. A 9mm will be in my future. I hope to be reloading for all of my centerfires..
But, I am going to be building a hunting rifle for shooting out to 500 yards. As such, my goal is a 6.5 cartridge that will produce 2800 fps with 142-147 gr bullets out of a 24-inch barrel.
As such, I've just about decided to chamber my next rifle in 6.5x284 Norma. But, load to a COL of 2.800 inches to function out of a short-action with a detachable magazine. I would like to avoid a long-action. I'm not sure this is an achievable goal. But, this is why I joined this forum.
Well, anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm retired Air Force and am currently working as a Correctional Officer in Fort Stockton - 263 miles southeast of El Paso, 85 miles southwest of Odessa/Midland. I'm allowed to hunt on state property and am within 65 miles of the Davis Mountains. This is why I'm searching for a mid-range rifle and cartridge combination - (350 to 500 yards).

Sounds interesting. I think your gonna have your work cut out for you trying for 2800FPS and 500yds in a short action.
What brand action, barrel, trigger are you going to use?

My first choice is a Remington 700 short action with detachable magazine.
A Mountain Rifle stock (13 3/8 pull) because it fits me so well and I love the way stock looks.
My choice of barrel maybe a Lijia 24-inch, stainless, heavy sporter contour, fluted.
I'm probably going to use the factory X-Mark Pro to keep cost down and try-out it out. I prefer a two-stage trigger. But, an affordable one seems non-existent.
Moreover, after reading Zak Smith's articles. I'm inclined to consider the 260AI.
My second choice is the Savage Hunter Series Model 11 BTH (Short Action) 260AI with factory AccuTriggerâ„¢.
Or a Model 11 BTH (Long Action) in 6.5x284 Norma - 26 inch barrel. I may us a recontoured factory barrel.
The Savage Hunter Series appeals to me. Owner switchable barrel and bolt heads. Such flexability will allow a different chamberings almost at will.
However, I'm still open for in-put. I'm thinking 6.5 Creedmoor... long VLD bullets and still cycle through a short action. But, I know 2800 fps is out of the question.
