Anyone have experience using IMR 4895 for .223 Remington. I am working up some loads using Nolser 55-grain BT's on top of IMR 4895 in accordance with the Nolser manual and,,,well how should I say it, but my powder runneth over.
I cut back the load back to 21.5 to 22.5 just to be safe. IMR 4895 is the only powder I am experiencing this with. Any thoughts?

What rifle are you using these for, that will help a lot in figuring out the best load for you.
My brother noticed when the IMR powders changed manufacture, that he could not get all of the powder from his loading data in to the cartridge.

long drop tube perhaps vibrating the powder into a more settled density as well, nosler doesnt list that powder on their web data site and i dont own a nosler manual but do they specify it is a compressed load ? my lyman does with a max load ( albeit with a 55 gr. sierra spt)

For that bullet, 22 grains is the starting load with IMR 4895 and the MAX load, which is a compressed load is 25.5 grains. I switched over to WW 748 for my AR, the load for my rifle is 26 grains with a Sierra 55 grain bullet.
There are a lot of factors, such as what type of rifle, is this commercial or military brass and can you achieve the OAL for the cartridge spec, which is 2.20"?

I'm still using Nosler 5th edition, but that has 55 gr BT over 25.5 gr 4895 as a max load at only 93% density. Shouldn't be a compressed load.
Starting load of 23.5 gr at 86% density.
Speer does have 25.5 gr as a compressed load with their bullets.

I'm not sure what weapon you're using but in my 20yrs of shooting .223, I've always found AA2460 to be the best (accuracy) powder for 50-55gr bullets. I think it is now called A2460. I've played with them all....it's my GO TO powder with a Sierra 50gr flatbase or Hornady Vmax or Nosler BT. (standard primers) Good luck.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for the multitude of replies. I am using Remington 700. with Winchester Brass and Remington 7 1/2 Bench Rest Primers. I am using the 6th Edition of the Nosler Reloading manual. I think I will just pull those loads and start over again. Better to be safe than sorry

wcstacf,
Have you looked at the Lyman 49th edition? They have a lot of good loading data.

One of my shooting pals has a Savage varmint with a 9" twist and his favorite powder was H322 with bullets from 55gr to 70gr. Dilaing in a varmint load is not the same as shooting an AR15. You just gotta fuss with it and spend a lot of time and learn what your Remmy likes and doesn't like. It'll tell you. One day you'll send some down range and they'll all drop in one hole. Just keep trying. Good luck.

I use a lot of H322 in .223. Meters well and kills Pdogs DRT. One of my most accurate .223 loads though was using 4064 but it's a PIA to load as the kernels are almost longer than the neck is wide. Needs a lot of tapping and encogagement to get the whole load in the case. All of my pdoggin buddies though use 4895 with great success. RD

I use my vibrating tumbler to shake powder into the shells if it will go in.

BBTC48, A2460 is also my favorite in the AR, Mini14, and S&W 1500..

I have used IMR 4895 with the Sierra 55 grain spitzer with really good results. It is a pain to pour in, but I used a funnel and a drop tube and it fit just like it should. Shot pretty well.
I have been using the 45 GrainSierra spitzer with the Hodgdon Benchmark. Result.....little bitty groups. I stay with this loading now.
good shooting
