Just picked up a couple of 98 mausers one of them has a reidfield peepsight on it.   There was a box of mix and match ammo with them well i shot the one with the peep sight today.   At 50 yards i was able to shoot a very impressive group with that gun and ammo. Thinking of loading 200 grainers for a new foul weather gun on whitetails With my eye sight anything after 50 yards would be tough with iron sights any suggestions.   Is it a nice caliber to load for.

The 8mm is everthing that you would really need in the US for any game white tailed deer on up. It is a straightforward cartridge to load. 180 gr on up on the bullets would be my choice. When loading, move toward maximum loads with caution as always and don't try to make it an 8mm Rem Mag. This is definitely one of the most  overlooked cartridges that there is.

YB, I use 195 Grain Hornady interlocks or 180 Rem. Corelocts in mine with H4350 to great success. 150's Don't seem to do well at all. Throat is too long for the shorter bullet. RD

For hunting loads, I find the 220 grain Sierra Spitzer over Win748 to work very nicely!  The European Mausers (German, Spanish, Yugo, etc) prefer the heavier bullets, as they are rifled for the 196 grain bullet.

Turkish Mausers prefer the 150 grian SP, as they were regulated for the 154 grain bullet.

I like to have one bullet/load for all, and when it comes to "my" 8x57, i chose to load 200 NP's at 2,550fps.  I've harvested everything from moose and bear, on down to coyotes with this one bullet/load, and it does an EXCELENT job!  It will open some on small animals like coyotes, yet still giving good penetration on the bigger animals like moose blk. bear and deer.  It's VERY accurate too.

The group was shot with a B&L 1.5x6, set on 6x.

I now also have a Zeiss 3x9 for it too, both in claw mounts.

My drilling was made in 1935, and i bought it more than 25 years ago for $350.00, it is chambered 16-16- 8x57jrs,  BUT,

I also have two Krieghoff insert bbls, chambered 22lr and 22WMR.  I can slide one or the other in, lock it in place with a key, and they "always" go back to zero.  They are adjustable so you can sight them to where ever you like.  Best part is, they shoot as good as a decent bolt action rifle.

I find them very useful on hunts to collect camp meat, but mostly i just carry one of the other in my pack to use for what ever i want, like when i came upon this fox last winter.

Since i bought it, i have rebuilt it to the gun i always wanted, and it's been one of the best gun buys i've ever made!

Anyway, my drilling has been my "go to gun" ever since i bought it, and i hope to put another buck in my freezer with it this weekend.

My apologies to the owner of this thread, for the hijacking i have caused!

no apologies needed i love reading this stuff and pictures are a great bonus if you collect a deer this year and do not post a picture and tell how you got it then apologies may be needed. I have never put my hands on a drillings and never knew they would group like that. Even at 25 years ago 350.00$ was a great deal

OK then,  I went to my spot this morning, and this little meat buck came out at about 175 yards.

I let him get to about 125, and shot him in the ribs when he turned sideways to walk into the woods.  One NP through the ribs, and he ran about 60 yards in a half circle, and folded up.  The top of his heart was blown off, and he still ran that far.

It's absolutely "amazing" how good you can see at low light levels with a Zeiss scope!

  BTW, here's a group i shot with a Krieghoff drilling chambered in16-16- 30-06,

My Yugo M48 is awfully fond of 170gr Hornady Interlock RN (yes... round nose) over 47 gr 4064. Super accurate, and plenty hard hitting for elk, never mind deer.

If you want something accurate but with even bigger (bear/moose) oof, a 200gr Speer SP over 52gr 4350 does the trick very nicely.

Frankly, the 220gr Sierras are better suited to 8mm Rem Mag, or 8X68mm than for 8x57mm
