Searching thru the Army ammo specsheets I saw that the match 308 round was using a 168 SMK and IMR4895. I have a good supply of H4895 and decided to play w/ thier charge and see how i could do.

heres the target w/ the hornady soft points, my hunting load.

I shot some matchkings over the same charge and while i didnt shoot for group i did dust off some anoles at 215-218 yards.

While this isnt the tightest group it is from a 20" lightwieght barrel.

At another forum I frequent, we had a thread on duplicating the Federal GMM load. Someone found out from a Federal salesman that they use IMR-4064 in their loads.

We were getting scary accuracy using the 168 gr. Sierra MK BTHP's over 43.0-43.5 grains of 4064 with various cases and primers.

I shot a 0.40" group at 100 yards using Winchester cases, CCI regular primers (not the BR stuff) and 43.5 grains of IMR-4064.

Good shooting!

I just finished running a tests with IMR4895 and 168 gr SMK through my Remington 700P.  Here were my results.

Caliber: .308 Win
Bullet: 168 gr SMK
Case: Federal Match
Primer: Federal GM210
Powder: IMR4895
Charge: 41.5 gr
COAL: 2.906"

Avg Velocity: 2,606
SD: 9.53
ES: 25.70

Caliber: .308 Win
Bullet: 168 gr SMK
Case: Federal Match
Primer: Federal GM210
Powder: IMR4895
Charge: 42 gr
COAL: 2.906"

Avg Velocity: 2,648
SD: 13.03
ES: 34.78

Caliber: .308 Win
Bullet: 168 gr SMK
Case: Federal Match
Primer: Federal GM210
Powder: IMR4895
Charge: 42.5 gr
COAL: 2.906"

Avg Velocity: 2,685
SD: 12.12
ES: 30.34

Of the three loads, the one using 42.5 gr was the most accurate with a group size of 0.05" at 100 yards on a sunny day with temperature of about 84 degrees, wind out of the NE @ 5-10 mph.

I haven't tried any loads using IMR4064.  Normally I use 41.9 gr of Varget and have managed extremely tight groups using the same COAL (0.020" off of lands) as above with a velocity of 2,624 fps, SD of 5.74 fps  and ES 15.91 fps.

with the 41.5 gr load i get 2550 from a 20" carbine barrel. its a steyr barrel but still pretty fast to only lose that little compared to a 26" remington.

Is that 2,550 fps using IMR4895 or H4895?  I ask because H4895 is a slower burning powder than IMR4895.

That is the exact  specs of my favorite .308 load. Verry accurite.

I do use the bench rest primers sometimes hard to tell if they improve groups.

outstanding results, cohiba -

while we're on the subject of duplicating factory loads, i'd like to see someone do it with the "plain jaine" federal blue box in 150-grain .308 psp, including the bullet used.

for some reaosn, my rifle really likes this factory load and while i have no clue what bullet they use (perhaps speer's psp?) it performs flawlessly on game. considering great success like that, i'd like to duplicate it.

A load I worked up for my M1a that has performed well:

168 grn BTHP, Sierra Matchking

IMR4895, 42.4 grns

Federal Match brass

Winchester primer

Very close to one of Trigger_Puller's.
