Hello all,

Went to the pistol range today, was snowing to much here in corrupted politician land i.e. Illinois  to be outdoors for rifle. Anyhow heres the results of some loads I cooked up. I have been loading since I was a kid under my fathers supervision so say about close to 30 years, these loads are cross referenced from several manuals (Lyman, Hornady, Sierra) they are safe out of a capable and functional firearm. Don't just throw them in any old revolver you have, make sure its up to par. The 38 special loads are NOT +P loads , read the 357 magnum loads carefully.

38 special -
Firearm used: S&W 14 6" barrel
Primers: Winchester Small Pistol
Cases: Mixed head stamp brass
Bullet: 158 Gr. Lead RN sized to .357

1st load:
Powder: Alliant Bullseye 3.5 Grains
Old go to load for my father and me.
Accurate at 10 and 25 ft.
Smokey as hell, has always been that way
brings back a lot of good memories. Low Recoil.

2nd load:
Powder: Alliant Blue Dot 6.3 Grains
Not to accurate, I am not a fan of this
powder, left a lot of unburnt powder behind.
low recoil.

3rd load:
Powder: Accurate Arms #2 Improved 3.6 Grains
Pretty much a duplicate load of the 3.5 bullseye
not as smokey though  Accurate at 10 and 25 ft.

4th load:
Powder: Accurate Arms #5 5.0 Grains
Good accuracy, low recoil, not as smokey as the others

I am gonna try winchester 231 next, I remember it being cleaner burning then all the others listed. I may be wrong though. All of the above loads are moving at around 800 FPS. The bullets were all old stock from 3-D bullets so I don't know if the smokey part is from the powder or the lube that was used.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

357 Magnum-
Firearm(s) used: S&W 19 4" barrel + S&W 27 6" barrel
Primers: see each individual load
Cases: see each individual load
Bullet: see each individual load

1st load:
Powder: Accurate Arms #7  10.1 grains
Primer: CCI small pistol
Cases: Winchester
Bullet: 158 Gr. Lead SWC

Moderate power and recoil out of both revolvers.
Accurate, low smoke. Good target load.

2nd load:
Powder: IMR 4227 12.3 grains
Primer: Winchester small pistol magnum (WSPM)
Cases: Federal
Bullet: 160 Grain swaged lead with 1/2 copper jacket SWC/HP

Moderate power and recoil out of both revolvers. Large
muzzle flash out of the 4", 6" had a little but nothing out of the
norm. Accuracy was good.

3rd load:
Powder: IMR 4227 16.8 grains
Primer: CCI 550
Cases: Federal
Bullet: Hornady 140 gr. Jacketed Hollow point
Moderate to High power load, still comfortable to shoot in 4" or 6"
Accuracy was decent but nothing to write home about.

4th load:
Powder: Alliant Blue Dot 11.3 grains
Primer: Winchester small pistol magnum (WSPM)
Cases: Federal
Bullet : Hornady 158 Gr. FP/XTP jacketed
HOT! Load about .5 grains below max.
If you want everyone at the range to notice you this is the load
Recoil wasn't bad in either revolver, but lots of BOOM! and moderate
muzzle flash. Guy next to me thought I was shooting a 44 Mag
when it hit the back stop it went KA-THUNK! not like the wussy 9mm 's
"plink". Once in a while I like to throw a hot load downrange. Anyhow, no signs
of pressure on the cases, primers were fine and cases showed no signs
of stress. Unlike the 38 blue dot load there was no left over powder, so I guess
blue dot needs a hotter primer and load.

When you walk out of the range with black hands and a black ring around your eyes and nose you know you had a fun day at the range

Thanks for listening, please respond with any questions or comments are welcome also.

Jeff / Slingshot

Glad you had fun at the range  today (Gats?), Good day for it.

I just picked up some Acc.Arms #7 the other day to try in my .357Mag. GP100. I was going to try loading them like your 1st. .357 load.(Also in my Accurate Arms guide)  Sounds like a good load.

Any barrel leading? as I'm also going to use 158Gr L SWC's

Thanks for posting the info, Jeff

Hey SlickrS23,

Yep G.A.T.S. closest indoor range by me. I have shot at Maxon's in DesPlaines but with todays weather I passed on driving that far.

As for leading, nope the barrel was clean as a whistle, but I did fire the jacketed loads after the lead, so it may of cleaned it out. I usually don't have a problem with leading though.

What area you around?

I'm about 20min. from Gats.

I picked up the AA#7 to try as I ran out of the Unique I have been using(6.0Gr. with a 158 Gr L SWC). I'm new to reloading and I have had good luck so far. Alot of good advice and info on this board.

Thanks again for the post, Good info there,  Jeff

Rub it in now, I had to work today.

BTW, what kinda lube you be using?

Oh, and uhhh... I used to stay in a motel in Des Plains many moon ago. I was working in Sears and John Hancock bldgs. Also went over to Rolling Meadows quite a bit.

From there I worked about 100 miles south of Chicago in a town called Woodworth/Cresent City located about 50 miles south of Kankakee.

the bullets i cast are 150 gr swcs from a lyman mould and most recipe books don't have that bullet weight listed either so i pick the closest wieght and load conservately...
