Rifle: M77 Ruger 24" Barrel  with 4x12 Bushnell scope chief. This is a 1st generation M77 was my brothers bought about 30 years ago.
Range: 100 Yards
Weather: Damn cold ! about 32 degrees felt like 20 with the wind chill.
Wind: nominal

1st load:
Cases: R-P
Powder: IMR4831 - 59 Grs.
Primer: Rem 9 1/2 Magnum
Bullet: Hornady 175 Gr. Spire Point Interlock

Not a bad load for meat, accuracy was about 2.5" spread on all 3 shot runs. Recoil was manageable.

2nd load:
Cases: W-W super nickel
Powder: IMR4350 - 55 Grs.
Primer: CCI LR magnum (250)
Bullet: Hornady Interlock 154 Gr. Spire point

Very accurate load, was getting 1/2" spread on all 3 shot runs. Recoil was very manageable,
Velocity: 2700 FPS. This load was taken from the 49th ed. Lyman Reloading manual. Starting load, I am gonna work with this one a while maybe bump it up, max load it says is 66.0 Grs. think I will make 6 loads for each grain up to about 62 Grs. I am planning on using this rifle for mountain goat in BC Canada this year.

I am also going to try Alliant RL-22 and work up a load from there. Definitely have to change out the scope though. This one is a little long in the tooth.

Anyone out there have experience with Mountain Goat hunting? what scope and power would you suggest? What is the average range a shot will be taken for Mt. Goat ?

Thanks,
Jeff / Slingshot

If someone has a 7mm Rem Mag load they really like in Ruger No. 1 rifles, I'd really appreciate hearing it.  I'm particularly interested in loads using RL 22 and 154gr and heavier bullets.

you should be getting better velocities than that with a 7 mag

i get 2750 with 140-150 in a 7 mauser. and in the 3,000 range with my 7 mauser ackley.

but i use 50-55 grains of powder to do it. and yes these numbers are from a chronograph.

Hornady manual shows 50.0 gr minimum charge and 57.9 maximum charge for the 175 gr Interlock w/IMR4831.  Sierra Manual shows 60.9 as max load.  Hodgon Reloading Center shows 54.0 minimum and 58.0 maximum charge for IMR4831.  I normally don't use the Lyman manual and it is not surprising about the variance in loads between the different manuals.  Looks like you might be at or around max load.  I would approach higher weights very carefully.  Anybody else have a different take on max loads?

imr powders are usually not the higher velocity powders.

hodgdons same number powders will usually show a higher velocity.

pressure is the deciding factor.

This is one of m hunting loads but it should be used with extreme caution. I use 66 grains of IMR 4831 in front of a 140 grain Barnes X-bullet. It will push to 3350 f.p.s. This is above safe listed loads so proceed with caution. I am shooting that out of a Rem Sendero with a 26" stainless barrel. I am using Fed 215 Magnum primers.

Weatherby vanguard with Nikon 4-12

I like 175g factory the best and I have found a few lots of 155s it likes.

But I have loaded both H/IMR 4831 and IMR4350 with 175g and had <1" group.

But I found Rx22 with 61.5g and 175s <1/2 inch. I then loaded 160 and 162s with Rx22 at 65g and had the same results.

In my Weatherby Vanguard 7 MM Rem Mag I can get 1/2 to 3/4 groups at one hundred yards, (depending on how I am shooting) with the following load.

Winchester cases

Federal 215 Magnum Primer

Hornady 162 gr BTSP

66 gr Reloader 22.

Bullets seated .020 off the lands.

THIS LOAD IS THREE GRAINS OVER MAX IN THE HORNADY MANUAL, BUT IS PERFECTLY SAFE IN MY RIFLE. IF YOU CHOOSE TO DUPLICATE IT, DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK AND WORK UP SLOWLY AND VERY CAREFULLY.

I wish all these postings had listed barrel twist. My 7 rem, mag has a 1 in 10" twist. and a lighter 24" barrel. I think I should stick with 140 gr,ers I am thinking of scraping a barns 160 gr. test that I have loaded and ready to go. I am worried that it wont stabilize in cold weather. What do ya think ?

With the 7 mag not being much faster than the 7x57 is the very reson I would never buy one for many years plus how much more powder it takes to do it. but now I do have one
