With the lack of powder availability lately, I have had to go with what I can get.  Being nearly out of my beloved H4895 and not finding any locally, I bought an 8-lb jug of H4350.  I have data for it to reload my milsurps, but I can't find any load data for the .308Win!  The bottle label has a load for .243Win, and then for some magnum calibers - surely the .308Win would fit in there too?

I am loading the Hornady 150 grain FMJ-BT bullet, at moderate loads ( I seldom favor MAX loads).  Been using either 40.0 or 44.0 grains of H4895, depending on the rifle I'm loading for.  The lighter loads I reserve for my Spanish M1916 Guardia Civil rifle.

Thanks for any help in finding a good H4350 load.

I'm a Varget guy for the .308Win....sorry.  All I got for you is: http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

Just select "Rifle", and then "308Win".....click on get data....BINGO!

I just glanced, but I don't think I saw anything.

17 bucks spent on a Lyman Reloading Handbook is money well spent.

the subscription to http://www.loaddata.com pays off pretty well also.

scott's right is more of a mag erm heavy load powder funny thing is h414 is almost the same speed in fact it was designed to be a ball powder equivalent of 4350,hodgdon list the 414 with 308 but not the 4350 ( albiet few loads with it )ur correct in using lighter loads for the spanish gun as their nato specs were considerably lower... the only place i can find it listed is the lee book altho several others have loads listed for imr4350 ( mostly with heavier bullets) and it isnt rated good for that ( ie; hi pressure low charge weights) anyways the lee ( #1) list with 150 bullets 47 grains for 2500 fps there is no lower load so reduce accordingly and if milsurp brass even more .also plz note it is way down there on lee's list ( if ur familar with lee's way of publishing loads thaz bad )it does indeed work great in 243 and a few other rounds that are considered slightly overbore (the 308 is underbore btw )also keep in mind that slower powders arent reccomended for reducing much ) g'luck !

I am in the same boat. I have an Ishapore 2A in 7.62. When I first started reloading it was for this rifle and started searching the net and ran across the .308 vs 7.62 debate.

http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2006/308vs762nato/index.asp

(A refresher and good article with pressure guidelines)

The rifle is stamped right on the barrel 7.62 so. I began comparing published loads and pressures in my manuals; Loadbooks, Lee second edition, Sierra and Speer.

Loadbooks, for .308, has a good section on loading for 7.62 in Hodgdon Powders Match Loads. But fryboy is right.  Lee, pp.427, is the only source using 150 gr. jacketed bullet; start 44.0gr mv 2364 - max 47.0 w/mv 2504 and psi=44592 with H4350 in the manuals I have.

Thats one source, check Hodgdon on-line also.

I have been working up loads with 180gr Sierra Pro Hunter and IMR4350. When the IMR is out I have a Pound of H4350 that I'll start using. They are hunting loads for Mr. Moose using my 2A.

Re-read your post, diregard the 308 vs 7.62 part

moose amigo plz keep in mind that hodgdon, imr ( who is now owned by hodgdon) and accurate all make a 4350 all with close burning rates yet differnt loading rates

i wont say that one cant work up a load that is acceptable  but i will say that 4350 is the burning rate where they start warning us of not reducing loads very much

not to say that it was made just for heavy bullets but heavy bullets for the calibers that are slightly overbore to medium overbore for the caliber ,

go to stevespages.com/page8.htm and click on the caliber you are interested in, then click on the bullet weight. they have loads for the 308 with 4350 powder.

hope this helps.

4350 is too slow for the .308.

Yes Sierra does list this powder for the 168gr + bullets but, agian, it's too slow.

Hi Bigdog57 from Australia.

You may not realise this but H4350 is actually made by ADI in Australia. H Varget=AR228, H4350=AR2209 and H4831SC=AR2213SC that I know for a fact but there may be other Hidgdon powders that are actually ADI as well.

So if you want to get all the load data you need for free visit

http://www.adi-limited.com/handloaders-guide/

You can download the guide or check your favourite loads online.

You will find many loads for the .308 here.

Cheers,

Peter.

The only home for 4350 is in long action middle calibers. 30 06, 8mm Mauser (with 190-220 gr bullets), and similar.

Reloader 15 is the ticket for .308 Win, although if you can have few powders, 4064 is probably the most versitile, and works in a long list of middle caliber rifles.

I am now using RL15, W748 and RG4895 for my .308Win/7.72X51 loads.  All give very similar performance.

You mentioned "milsurps"...4350 is too slow to shoot in an M1A. It can do damage to the op rod.

I'm into old bolties - don't have any American semis.  I use a different load in my CETME.

This powder works well for 8mm Mauser, .303 Brit and 7.5 Swiss.
