For 600 yards, 42 gr of Reloader 15 and a 175 SMK, and you'll never be unhappy. All COAL were 2.80" by the way

All fired from Savage 12FV w/ 26" heavy barrel

.308 Win 175gr SMK - 42gr Reloader 15 - Win/Win 600 yard accuracy load 2615 fps

.308 Win 168gr HPBT/ Hornady- 42.7gr - Reloader 15- Fed/Win 600 yard accuracy load B - MAX load! 2770 fps

.308 Win 168gr HPBT/ Hornady- 42 gr - IMR4064 - Win/Win super accurate as well, but a bit less recoil for off-hand shooting. 2575 fps   Savage 12FV w/ 26" heavy Barrel

A load that used to be very popular with bench rest shooters was a full case of H380 (filled to the neck, not compressed) and a 160 -170 gr HPBT.  I don't remember any of the pressure or MV data but fired from a 20" heavy barrel this load took home it's share of trophys.  And even if you didn't win, the muzzle blast from that 20" barrel would turn the shooters on either side of you into nervous wrecks by the end of the match.  Again since I don't recall any of the charge weights, pressures, etc and of course the fact that case volumes vary, it would be best to work up slowly to the full case load.  fprefect

I would have to say that's a fairly strong endorsement.  I used to do quite a bit of benchrest shooting primarily with the 222 Rem and the 22 PPC at a time when Varget had yet to be developed, getting my best results with almost all bullets using H322 using primarily Sierra and Hornady 53 gr. HP and 52 gr. HPBT.

I suspect Varget might be a little slow for the 222, but Hodgdon lists several loads for the 22 PPC.

Just wondering, has anyone had any success using Varget in the 22 PPC cartridge?

No problem.  They also have a relatively new powder called Benchmark I believe that I intend to try when I have the time, and as I said earlier, they do show some loads using Varget in the 22PPC and may also give it a try with some heavier bullets.  Thanks again for the tip.

The basic .308/7.62x51 recipe of 42 to 44 gr of RL15 and a 175gr SMK is the basic M118LR load used being used today by the military. It is an excellent long range load.  Military snipers are going to 1000+ yards with this load.

I shoot a 168 gr BTHP Sierra bullet with 41 grains of IMR 4895 or 44 grains of IMR 4064. Currently I am developing a load with Benchmark.

This is for shooting in my M1A.

I just did some test loads today, I shoot a .308 Win Model 88, it is short 22" and a lever action.

With a Hornady SST 165 grain I was able to get a 0.96" group at 100 yards with 45.5 Grains RL 15 powder.

Some of you may think that group is not good, but for this lever action Rifle I was jumping for joy.

My cousin also uses a Speer SP 165 gr, shot with 44.5 gr of Win 748 powder and this is extremely accurate.

The M118LR load is 43.1gr/RL15

The original M118LR load (Pre Iraq) had a higher charge weight and is much more accurate than the current load.

44 grains of IMR 4064 is a great load and I use it in my SPS tactical 20”. I have been using 43 grains in my CZ Varmint 550 and 42.5 grains in my 5R-Milspec. IMR 4064 is one of the most versatile powders I have used. I used H4895 and have not had very good luck; I may try IMR 4895 later and see how it works.

I just ran a test load today using Sierra 175 gr HPBT MK's and Reloader 15 starting at 40.0 gr and working up to 44.0 in 1 gr increments. Tightest group was 41.0 gr. Next run, I'll go from 40.5 gr to 41.5 gr in 0.2 gr increments and hone it down.

Jumping in a little late but, I'm getting excellent accuracy in my 112 BVSS 308 using the 190 SMK pushed by 45.8 grains of IMR 4350 in Norma brass. I'm seating .008" off the lands. This load is stiff so I recommend working up to it. My velocity from a 26" barrel is 2506 fps.

My standard .308 load is

45.0 gr IMR 4895 powder
win primers
win brass
165gr Hornady SST
COL 2.79"
Velocity - 2750 fps in 22" bbl, 2590 fps in 18.5" bbl

This is a general purpose load, but will shoot under 3/4" in better rifles. I reload for my myself, my father and brother; between us we have five .308's. I small base resize all my brass to keep the feeding reliable in semi-auto's, and shoot the same ammo in all our rifles without problems.

Both of these loads give me 10 shot groups @ 100 .625 or less.

In my 26 inch stainless Savage. No matter what I am shooting this is the only load used in this rifle. It is so accruate why try anything else?

for recoil very mild. Hornady sst's and amax's are just about as good
