Anyone loading for one? I'm waiting for a 28" heavy varmint barrel to arrive and have Nosler brass and Lee dies on order. I'll be shooting to 1000 yards so initially ordered some 175 gr A-Max pills and I have a fair supply of 168 gr SMK's. to try.

I waiting for mine, it should be done this week. I think it's a #3 contour barrel(unsure which company possible pac-nor) at 26" 's on a Ruger 77 tang safety action. Mine will be a deer rifle. I have 2 boxes of 140 Nosler Custom accubonds coming to start out with but was looking for someone pet load. I guess not too many 280AI followers.

i've got one built on a springfield action. it's a hunting rig. used the 140 ballistic tips and accubonds with very pleasing results.

Factory or handloads? I'm looking for someone's pet load as a starting point. I have 2 boxes of factory Nosler accubonds enroute to start with.

at work now.
i'll get my info posted tonight.
velocity wise, it was matching the pedestrian factory 140 ammo that my dad was using in his 7mmRemMag. and doing so without much fuss. i'm really not pushing the cartridge in my rifle and really like the performance.
done real well on some large mule deer bucks and all my exotic sheep hunts.
i'll try and remember to post components tonight.
later. k

Well, I got to shoot my new rifle. It was in the rain but the cutom Nosler Accubond ammo grouped abot 3/4-7/8" during the barrel break in process. I think the gun will be a shooter. I'll try the R22/accubond load you mentioned when I get my dies. Thanks again.

sounds like an accurate rifle, indeed, cb. with a little tinkering at the bench, i'd imagine you'll be able to duplicate the accuracy performance you saw with the factory stuff without much effort. those accubonds are a nice bullet to work with, both for hunting purposes and for finding an accuracy in a rifle. report results and good luck. k

My 280 Ack is primarily a hunting rifle and my go to load is the Speer 160 Hot Core with Hod 4831. I personally don't like any bullet under 160 gr in the 7mm . The heavier bullets shoot just as flat and kill big game much better at long range. You will like the 280 Ack.

So far, my best accuracy has been with the 162 grain A-Max followed closely by the 150 grain Sierra Matc h King. I'm still searching for a load it likes with the 175 Sierra Match.
I see your from the Kingsport area. My wife is from a very small town in Russell County......Honaker Virginia. It's about 40 miles west of Bristol. I think the population is around 600, if not less now.

I have been to Honaker a bunch of times, but not lately. The 280 Ack seems to shoot its best with heavier bullets.

morning, bea175. ya know, i tend to agree with the above statement with this stipulation ... in the stw or the rum. or larger proprietary and wildcat 7mm cartridges. maybe even the remmag and wbymag on the small end. cartridges that can put a bit of velocity behind the better bc of the heavier bullet with their larger powder capacity.
but with anything based on the small '06 case (and smaller), heavy doesn't really appeal to me. when i was working up my hunting load in the .280, i ran both the 140 and 160 accubonds pretty extensively at the range. they both shot very well so i knew whichever i chose, accuracy wouldn't be lacking. with the top end velocities i was able to attain (3250, 3120 respectively) the 140's were flatter shooting out to 500 by a little over an inch (a non-factor). drift at that range was similar for each in 10mph breezes. the 160's retained more energy at that range by about 200#'s (a non-factor). in essence, they pretty much mimicked each other. one marginally better here. the other marginally better there. kind of a wash.
so i chose the bullet based on the animal most commonly hunted with the rifle. my 280 was built for deer, antelope, exotics. the arguement could certainly be made if this rifle were ever pushed into the roll of elk hunting, the heavier bullet would be prefered. for that purpose, i may prefer the marginally better energy numbers of the 160's. but for my stated purpose above, the marginally better ballistics is perferred.
i certainly wouldn't badmouth a fellers desires to use 160's or heavier in the .280ai. i just don't see a huge benefit using them over lighter stuff.
personal opinon, of course. talk to ya later. k

morning to you, i use the heavier bullets because my rifle likes them the best, plus in the real word of hunting i can't tell the difference at longer range how flat they shoot. The best rule of thumbs is to use the most accurate bullet that will get the job done on the animals you are hunting. A bullet through the lungs light or heavy you have back strap to eat.
