Hello,

Also new here.  I have recently started reloading and a friend has asked me to load up some .44-40 WCF loads using Hunters Supply 160 Grain cast lead flat top bullets for his Ruger Super Blackhawk.  I want to use Unique powder and CCI large pistol primers.  Anyone out there have an idea about a good starting point for the powder charge?  I was thinking around 8.5-9.5 grains and would I need to use a filler for this?  Don't be too hard on us rookies.  Thanks for all the help.

This information isn’t much help but I cast a 200g  (429-200-RF). For Unique my notes  shows loads starting at 6g and I stopped at 7.3g.

hola amigo and welcome to the forum, sadly when i first seen ur post i didnt reply as i dont use that light of boolit ,neither my lee nor my lyman list bullets that light ,one thing i will say is that a case full and lightly compressed black power will work ,sadly even a brief web search pulled up no hits ,keeping in mind that load data for a heavier bullet will work for a lighter bullet ( but NEVER the other way around)
lyman list 6.9 start 8.6 max for a 200 grain lead cast, somewhere in there u should find a good starting spot to work up from , usually with unique no filler is needed, but if u chose to use one plz use it from the start and never as a after thought

Not to steal this thread but I my old model 92 Winchester preformed very well with BP. I only stop loading it with BP because I was to lazy to really get after the clean up! With the lever it's a bit tedious.
The 45/70 trapdoor is another issue, it hates smokeless. The old man really got accurate with BP so that's the only way it wants to goes out to play.

Hi and thanks for all the replies, being a novice it is definetely helpful to bounce ideas off of all you knowledgeable Americans.

My friend mainly just wants to plink with this gun and he likes the idea of the lighter bullet for both cost and recoil. I have looked on Hodgdons website and they list two 160 grain bullet loads but that is with Clays, (4.2 grains starting) or TiteGroup, (4.5 grains starting) as the powder.

In my Speer reloading manual it only shows two 200 grain bullet loads and it shows both TiteGroup and Unique. TiteGroup starts at 5.8 grains and Unique at 7.8 and it follows just about 2 grains different for the maximum charge. So if I collate that with the 160 grain info on the Hodgdon site then about 6.5-7.5 grains looks like a fairly safe starting point. So you guys seem to be spot on. Any other thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

umm always make sure of ur target and especially ur back drop ! not sure if there's a 12 step program for us( it is very addicting) but i suppose this could be termed a support group lolz

umm usually no two powders ( primers bullets etc ) are the same so sadly cant always correlate
