I'm pretty new to reloading (have loaded approx. 600 rounds of .38 SPL and 9mm).

I now have a RIA 1911 nearly broken in and would like to reload for it as well.

I was given approx 500 185gr LSWC but have been unable in all of my data books to find any 185gr loads. I find 200 gr, but only JSWC in the 185's.

I'm looking for a light plinking load for range/target use only. My RIA has a standard 16# recoil spring currently.

I have the following powders:

Bullseye
HP-38
Titegroup
Supercomp
Win 231

This is the bullet:

Welcome to the forum,

I agree on the load with Wheezengeezer, but if your load is too light, the pistol may not cycle properly.

Please tell us how you found the forum and where do you live.

Again, welcome,

Jerry

Try about 5 to 5.3 grains of 231. If you had any Unique, I'd recommend about 7 grains or so.

These are somewhat light, and you may need to tweek the loads for consistant function.

Welcome, always need more Texans. I'm just down IH 35 in San Antonio.

Thanks to all.
I'll be setting up the dies and making my first batch tomorrow.

All of your help is greatly appreciated. I'll follow up with a range report in a week or so....

Trotted down and got my Lasercast recipe book, I throw thousands of those every year, love them.

Lasercast lists their data as 180 gr, not enough diff. to matter IMO.

Bullseye - 4.2-5.2 grains, 840-983fps.

231 - 4.8-5.7 grains, 840-950fps.

Both COAL of 1.250

The 200 gr. shows HP-38, 4.5 to 5.6 gr., and titegroup, 4.2-4.7gr.

No Supercomp in this manual, 1998 tho.

Good luck to ya, I throw Red dot and, now recently, Rex #2 behind mine in IDPA competition.

Well, I followed all of your advice (and a bit received elsewhere) and went to the range this morning to try my .45ACP test rounds:

1) 8 rds of 230gr FMJ over 5gr Bullseye
2) 8 rds of 185gr LSWC over 3.8gr Bullseye
2) 8 rds of 185gr LSWC over 3.5gr Bullseye

All sparked by a CCI 300 LP primer, 1.250" COAL with a crimp of 0.468".
All done on my Lee (4 die) Turret press wirth the Lee Factory Crip die.

Man, all worked flawlessly and the 3.5 and 3.8gr loads were like soft butter. All fired from my RIA 1911 Tactical.

Thanks for all of the advice. I believe I have found my range loads and am saving $$ as well as having relaxing fun at the reload bench.

Here's a pic of the 8 - 3.5gr rounds @ 15yds. I'm not too good a shot and have a bit of the old man yips, so they are not a tight pattern. But I'll get better. I was actually not so much aiming for the bullseye as I was just making sure they came out of the barrel and hit paper - no squibs or malfunctions of any type!

Congrats jeff. I run the same COAL, leaves between .020" and .030" of wadcutter shoulder out of the case (depending on exact case length, .45acp varies a lot, and seems to shorten the more you shoot it), something to taper crimp to, not enough to cause it to fail to go into battery fully.

I used to run 6 grains Red Dot under mine, last powder purchase I couldn't turn down 2.2 pounds (1 Kilo) of Rex 2 for $26 vs 1 pound of Red Dot for $20.
Rex is a Hungarian shotgun powder maker, a local dealer here stocks it, load data almost dead mirrors Red Dot.

Now running 6 grains of it to insure I make my "power floor" requirement of 177,000 (bullet weight times velocity) for my class in IDPA competition. I have to make 960 fps out of those, and I like some "breathing room", so I have aimed at 1,000 fps.
